Part 1 of 3
*Warning* This may be hard to pick up if you're not familiar with the Necro series. If you are currently reading it, it may spoil the ending.
MATTAIUS AT REST
"Mattaius Pitt is dead."
Terri Anaka listened to her words bounce off the walls of the office and tried her best to keep from wincing.
"Terri, we both know that's not true."
"It's truer than you think Leland."
Terri shuffled uncomfortably in her seat then stared stone faced back at the Agency Director before replying.
"Let it go. He's gone."
"You know I don't have that luxury."
She knew he was right. She could read it in the lines on his face; the lines that seemed to deepen every day.
He looked older than he should. He looked tired, battle scarred and she supposed she probably did too.
She felt for him and she wanted to help but she knew she wouldn't even if she could. Her friend had suffered beyond suffering to save them all. He'd died and come back as the thing he'd spent a lifetime destroying, only to suffer an agony at the hands of the Necrosiac, that was unheard of since the time of Christ.
He'd given everything to save them all and deserved whatever escape he wished, regardless of the fact his efforts had been in vain.
"You understand, we're going to lose the city. We need him. He's the only one that can see the contagion"
Terri nodded and let her gaze drop to her hands where they lay folded on her lap. The Necrosiatic infection was spreading through the city like a California wildfire. They'd hoped the death of the last Necrosiac would end the plague but it hadn't and she supposed they should have known it wouldn't. All the rules of magic told them it should have, but the rules don't apply to a Necrosiac or its power. While the undead who had been under the direct control of Luis Penance had suffered the same fate as him, those that had been infected by his children had been untouched by the dark prophets death, and continued to spread the disease.
And there was something else as well, something they couldn't identify causing the unbitten to become infected.
They'd lost three personnel to it in the last month and the hospitals in the safe zones had stopped taking anyone who showed the remotest signs of infection.
Where there wasn't infection there were protests and where there weren't protests there were riots, as enraged citizens hunted and burned anyone suspected of practicing Necromancy, despite Martial Law and the armies presence on the streets.
The city had been quarantined for close to three months and, despite the constant flow of aid flooding into it, food was becoming scarce and Clerics more so.
Something was spreading the disease and the only man who had a chance of figuring it out didn't want to be found.
"Do you think he's lost his mind?"
Terri shot Leland a stern look.
"Could we blame him if he did? He was crucified for God's Sake. You saw the cross Leland, it wasn't just a cross, it was an agony machine."
Leland's face seemed to soften a bit and when he answered a bit of the hard edge was missing from his gravelly voice.
"I'm just asking a question Terri. There have been rumors. There was a man on a flight to Anchorage who attacked and bit a passenger, then escaped custody once it landed. We think it may have been Pitt. "
Terri shook her head but she couldn't bring herself to outright deny the possibility that the man Leland spoke of was indeed her old partner. She wanted to classify it as another rumor in a city rife with them, like the rumors of strange things happening around the ghost town that had once been Vanderhaven, or the rumors that the government was considering a nuclear solution to the cities woes.
She raised her head to say "No" but instead found herself mumbling "Maybe."
Leland nodded and leaned across the desk towards her.
"Sooner or later you're going to have to tell me about whatever it is you're holding back. You're going to have to tell me the truth about the Hag but it can wait. What I need right now is your best guess. If you say you don't know where he is then I believe you, but don't expect me to buy that he's dead. A man like Mattaius Pitt makes a lot of noise when he goes out of the world"
Terri turned her head to peer out the window at the twinkling lights of the city beyond and wondered if she would ever sleep again. In the distance she could see the flames of a burning building, or a bonfire lit by a lynch gang.
The sound of sirens floated to her ears through the window - faint and lonely - like the last lament of a dying people.
After a moment she turned back to the Director and said simply "Alright."
Leland nodded his approval and sat back in his chair.
"Can you think of anywhere in Alaska he might go?"
"No, I'm sorry, I can't"
"Can you think of why he might have gone there? What he might be doing?"
Terri turned her head towards the window again, smiled and hoped her eyes didn't look as wet as they felt "He's looking for something"
"What?"
"Peace." She replied softly "He's looking for peace."

I had to come back to rate the remaining Necrosiac stories.
Good to see you couldn't quite let the story end there, Snark. This is by far the best non-published work I've ever read.

He had this crazy fast jab and would follow by trying to bite my shit in the knee.
It was all good, though, cause I put the holey smackdown on him with
the Righteous Chop of Justice, and he cried like a fetid wind howling through
ancient tombstones.

I can hear bells ringing and people cheering something about long live Necrosiac. If you will excuse me I think I'll go join them.

Dude!!
You just couldn't let it die, could you? You couldn't live with having one of the best series ever and just had to continue it.
I'm not complaining at all. I'm glad to see that once again Necrosiac is burning it's way into your mind.
You are an amazing writer, my friend. I have yet to see anything you've written that deserves less than a +2. Usually, it's worth a lot more; but such are the limitations of the site and rating system.
Keep it up bro; it's not just this site that needs not only an imagination like yours, but the ability you have to express it so vividly.
*ahem*
Now I'm going to go watch a monster truck rally so I don't seem so freaking Ghey...
Power tools...WOO!!

Damnit, I thought I'd get to read the entire series without enduring the painful wait between installments.
But why complain? I'd enjoy a story about Pitt getting a haircut and walking his dog, if you wrote it.
