So I've received a bunch of money for graduating...yea I know. Big suprise. Pretty much the only reason I'm getting into college is because of soccer. Anyways, I need to buy a desktop/laptop for college. Those of you who have gone through college, which would be better: Laptop or Desktop?
I've always been a PC guy myself, but lately I have been seeing more and more Macs around. Which of these is the better choic? I think that a Mac might be a better choice for me, I'm not really into computer gaming (not because I think they're gay, but because I've never been able to afford games, but now that I found Torrents...heh heh) But on the other hand I don't think that I could ever get used to them.
So here you go: Macintosh or PC?

If you want a nice notebook get a sony vaio or a mac, if you want a PC and a powerhouse then I'd say go for something like an AMD 64 or a dual-chip setup with the pci-express technology and one (or if the mainboard lets you, two) nice graphics cards, nvidia 6800gt are quite the bang for the buck, toss in two sets 1gig sets of ddr (2x512mb) that run in dual channel mode and you'll have one hell of a PC for anything, be it games or any kind of multimedia editing. Though it will cost you a small fortuine (around 300 per chip, 180 for mainboard, 300ish for each graphics card.. 400 for memory and around 500 for other componets.) it would do just about anything you wanted it to do in a very short amount of time.. when I took different courses we edited multimedia on just dells with a 2.4ghz celeron and 512mb of ram. They werent great but they got the job done.
If you want a comp for just random school stuff: Viao or Mac notebook, probably the mac if you want a notebook and to fiddle around with multimedia. If you want a PC just get a friend with knowlege to build you a pc and set the price around $1000ish.

Macs have one mouse button. They're complete shit and crash every time.
--
There are these places called 'stoars.' I've heard that if you take in stuff called 'munny' you can by a mouse with all the buttons you want. Like the Remington I use on my Mac. Two buttons. No problems.
I must say though, that I often wish I had a pc, since it appears that they never crash. That must be nice.

I'd get a PC- you'll drop your laptop or spill something in it (I've busted 2 new laptops like that)
I'm no expert, but journalists, publishers and photographers seem to use \macs- if you are in any way aiming towards that field then you should start getting used to the technology, otherwise stick to what you know.

first of all it's football, not soccer.
Depends what you want it for.
If you intend to run professional packages which require lots of power and reliability then get a mac.
If your just going to use it for all the basic computing needs, like word, excel, email internet, then get a pc.
looking at the prices you can get an excellent non-mac lap top for not a small fortune nowadays.
and remember, it's called football.

Fucking 'ay - football. If you want to play Konami's Pro Evolution 4, THE definitive FOOTBALL game, you'll need a PC. Come to think about it, if you want to play games you'll need a PC. Windows boxes are a neccessary evil for games, but Mozilla for browser and email client and Ad-aware and Windows Antispy and Spybot and jvPowertools will nearly make it as bulletproof as MacOS. AND,, if you chip your kids Xbox and.. well, nevermind..

Ok, if you don't mind having a deformed mouse and you don't feel like playing any videogames ever and you can actually learn how to properly use a mac, then hell go ahead and get one.

Mac iBook would be my first recommendation. Small, reliable, and if you want to go the second-hand route they are selling cheap on eBay, since the good product/shitty business plan of Apple is to put an upgraded model on the market every 6 hours or so.
I travel with an iBook, have an old iMac 1 piece unit at home. The home unit has never failed the basics for 7 years now. I'm still a computer imbecile, but at least I have an easy to use system.
And when was the last time you heard any Mac owner complain about getting a virus?

Ultimately that all depends on what you plan to do with your computer. if your major is computing heavy like a science, engineering, comp. sci., with lots of programming or spreadsheets or ftp and shit, go with a pc with a 64-bit AMD cpu. (or just a Pentium 4 if you can't afford the 64-bit). If you are a graphics person, Mac is the way to go. Macs are very much multimedia machines and good for stuff like photoshop and pictures/video/music/etc. (in fact, they support something like a million (?) more colors than a Windows PC). As for games, you can get them for Mac, they're just harder to find.
Desktop v. Laptop? Again, how computing heavy are you? A laptop is guaranteed to be close to obsolete by the time you're done with school (four years); you can at least upgrade a desktop. On the other hand, I'd probably just get a new computer after finishing college anyway. Plus, that also depends on where you're going. Is the campus all wireless? Is a computer required? Is it a regular part of classroom use/curriculum? These are all good reasons to go with a laptop over a desktop. Basically, if you think you'd take it out of your room, get a laptop. But be honest. It's stupid to buy a laptop and leave it sitting on your desk all day if you're not one of the type of people who would take it with them.
Hope that helped.

When I was in school, I'd work on a Mac all day. Then I'd go to work and work on a Mac all night. Then I'd come home to my PC and wonder where the fuck my Apple key was.
