In this year's Übermadness competition, there was a higher turnout than the previous two. One hundred seventy one Überusers submitted what they considered their best work in a large scale election to see who can compete in the tournament. While most of these works are outstanding, some leave much to be desired.

You have got to be kidding me. These posts are the epitome of what should not get votes in the madness. These pieces are shit, trite, and offensive. (Asterisks do not count in this category either)

Now, dig this people. Each user is entitled to voting for 20 of the 171 entrants in Übermadness. There are 151 entrants running for 108 open spots. Seems fair enough to begin with, doesn't it? Popular vote to determine who gets to participate in a contest based on popular voting. Very appropriate. Not so much. Let me explain what gets my knickers in a bunch.
You must have noticed by now that twenty of the entrants have asterisks by their names. What does this mean exactly? It means that they are guaranteed a spot in the Übermadness competition by automatic invitation. They competed in the previous Übermadness competitions, and placed high enough in the final ranking to be invited back to compete. The only exception to this is the Überlord from the previous competition, Jack McCallum.
Now, why are we able to vote for the users with automatically guaranteed invitations to compete in the same election we are voting for people with no guarantee to compete? The best answer I have received to date is "seeding". Apparently, the International Übermadness Committee (IÜC) has decided that in order to figure out how to place everyone in the tournament brackets, we need to have entry votes wasted on automatically guaranteed entrants. This is not fair to the people vying for entry, and it is certainly not fair for seeding, since each user has only 20 votes, and there are 20 automatic invites.
Another issue I have with this voting. Apparently this whole "20 votes for every user" crap is paying off big for single users with alternative accounts. Think about it. Say rad1101 has 32 alters, and he votes for who he likes 32 times. This highly inflates the numbers and causes problems. I am not so worried that some people will get more numbers than others, but there are some users who will purposefully inflate the votes for non-deserving submissions (see above list). This will, in effect, lower the quality of Übermadness for most of us.
Why didn't we have a requirement on who gets to vote? It would be the same requirement that was in effect for who was allowed to vote on submissions in the last madness. 3 posts submitted or 700 reviews. I personally would go without the 3 post submission rule. You have seen the shit out there. If an asshole wants to have their alter's vote count, make them write 700 reviews without getting banned first.
One more thing; how do we settle ties on votes for entry? Does the committee at this point choose based on the submission? If so, this is the first good thing I have seen come out of this since I opened that voting page for the first time yesterday.
Let me summarize my points. I am voting only for people who do not have a guaranteed spot in the Übermadness competition. I am not using any alternative accounts to vote for people who obviously do not want or deserve to be in madness. You people do whatever you want. As long as you vote for me.
Thank you to the IÜC for everything you are doing for us, I do appreciate it, even if I do not sound like it. I have a predilection to bitch, moan, sigh...

Personally I not entirely sold on the idea of having the auto-invites on the voting ballot but the solution is pretty simple - if you don't think they should get or need votes, don't vote for them.
Also if you think having 20 votes is too few, you should remember that in previous UMs, you wouldn't have been able to cast any votes at all - it was all done by a handful of people who spent quite a few hours reading, ranking and discussing. And believe me, it's no walk in the park to do that in one sitting - sure you get to read a lot of awesome stuff, but you have to wade through a mountain of shit to get to it.
Last UM, you had no say in what went on. This time you do. Surely that's a good thing? As this is the first time a public vote has been used as part of process (note: part, not the whole thing - the old school committee vote hasn't been kicked into touch), nobody knows exactly how it's going to pan out until all the votes are in.
People are going to bitch and complain at the seeding list as they did last time and the time before that. You really can't please everyone, but that doesn't mean it's fatally flawed.
As ever, the easiest way to gain a high seeding is simply this: write well.

couple things. there was a requirement to vote - and it's pretty much what you just said.
you're right about the banned alters thing, sadly only one of mine satisfies the requirements (Zombie_Reagan). do it people, 20 votes is too few. there are certainly more than 20 deserving authors up there.
and yes, I voted for JewToast. and myself. but the rest were deserving. and I didn't vote for any asterix people.
