Whilst replying to the other thread of similar name, I realised that I don't actually go in for bands/artists much, but rather individual songs. A collection of my top-ten (in order), with a bit of explanation. And a lewd granny, because I can.

1: Hey ya! (Outkast) - What can I say? Just such a lovely, feel-good song, with an excellent tune and some nice lyrics. Makes you want to dance. And shake. Like a photograph.

"If what they say is "Nothing is forever"
Then what makes, Then what makes, Then what makes
Then what makes, Then what makes LOOVVEEE?
(Love exception) So why you, why you
Why you, why you, why you are we so in denial
When we know we're not happy heeeerrreeee...
Y'all don't want me here you just wanna dance"

2: Gangsta's Paradise (Cooleo, among others) - excellent intro, lovely backbeat, it melds chior with rap, and you can learn the words and ryhme them off. Basically, it is cool. And profound, if you feel inclined to take it that way.

"I'm a educated fool wit money on my mind
Got my tin in my hand and a gleam in my eye
I'm a loc'ed out gangsta, set-trippin banger
And my homies is down, so don't arouse my anger, fool"

3: Teenage Kicks (Undertones) - the guitar rasps in the background, the vocalist rasps in the foreground (in a nicely familar accent - to me, anyway). It also kinda sums up the essence of teenagehood for me. Maybe I'm consumed with unnatural lust. It could happen.

"Are teenage dreams so hard to beat
Everytime she walks down the street
Another girl in the neighbourhood
Wish she was mine, she looks so good
I wanna hold her wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night"

4: Mr Brightside (Killers) - a really nice soft background beat, which seems to...I dunno, sparkle, on the way in. The rythm of the music shoehorns with the (quite emotional, if you're in the right mood) lyrics. A good story behind the words, and it conveys a sort of tormented ecstasy. Only me again? Ah, drat it.

"Jealousy
Turning saints into the sea
Turning through sick lullaby
Joking on your alibi
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'cos I'm Mr. Brightside"

5: Ace of Spades (Motorhead) - dududdudududu DADADADA. Love the intro. Nice swift guitar playing, and cymbals fit the sound. But it's the reckless abandon of the lyrics that really get me about this song, as if the gambler just doesn't give a fuck. All his money on one roll. The way it damn well should be.

"You know I'm born to lose, and gambling's for fools,
But that's the way I like it baby,
I don't wanna live for ever,
And don't forget the joker!
Pushing up the ante, I know you've got to see me,
Read 'em and weep, the dead man's hand again,
I see it in your eyes, take one look and die,
The only thing you see, you know it's gonna be,
The Ace Of Spades"

6: Thriller (Jacko) - this isn't purely because of the song, every time I hear it I think of the video, which is frankly fantastic. Dancing their way out of the zombie ring, the on-the-toes bit. 'tis great. Also, the song has an amazing beat to it, interspaced with those 'THRILLER!' bits. All round fucking classic. Pity Jacko went crazy, he had a great voice. And he could dance.

"That This Is Thriller, Thriller Night
'Cause I Can Thrill You More Than Any Ghost Would Dare To Try
Girl, This Is Thriller, Thriller Night
So Let Me Hold You Tight And Share A Killer, Diller, Chiller
Thriller Here Tonight
...
And Though You Fight To Stay Alive
Your Body Starts To Shiver
For No Mere Mortal Can Resist
The Evil Of The Thriller
[Into Maniacal Laugh, In Deep Echo]"

7: Scar Tissue (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) - antoehr 'soft' one. I really like the sound of this song - the way that it is soft, and the way that the bloody great lyrics are well-defined. Makes me think of nice things, which doesn't normally happen. Almost if it's trying to be sad, but optimism stops it being so. Something, anyway.

"Scar tissue that I wish you saw
Sarcastic mister know it all
Close your eyes and I'll kiss you 'cause
With the birds I'll share
...
Push me up against the wall
Young Kentucky girl in a push-up bra
Fallin' all over myself
To lick your heart and taste your health 'cause
With the birds I'll share
This lonely view..."

8: : Riverboat Song (Ocean Colour Scene) - the backbeat to this is fucking incredable. And the the lyrics are complex in places, but seamless. It almost builds up to the chorous a few times, but holds back, then brings you into it. A really great song.

"Like the things you found in love are by the way
And like to cheat on your soul
Like the best and worst of thoughts that lose control
Before you lie on your bed
It's more or less the same as the things that you said
Anyway for all the things you know tell me why does the river not flow
Anyway for all the things you said tell me why does the river run red
Anyway for all the things you've seen tell me when will the river run green
And anyway for all the things you know tell me why does the river not flow"

9: Ripple (The Grateful Dead) - again, a bloody great backbeat to it, and the soft lyrics are really, really good. The tranquility of the chorous is just fucking fantastic. I'm running out of words to describe all of these things, but it's a great song.

"If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come thru the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they're better left unsung.
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.
Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow."

10: A Whiter Shade of Pale (Procol Harum) - enters softly (shut the fuck up, Draqus) with a really orgional (for the time) sound. A nice, slow, relaxing song. The sort of song you could grab a lady to when you were 14.

"We skipped the light fandango,
turned cartwheels 'cross the floor.
I was feeling kind of sea-sick,
the crowd called out for more.
The room was humming harder,
as the ceiling flew away.
When we called out for another drink,
the waiter brought a tray.
And so it was that later,
as the miller told his tale,
That her face at first just ghostly,
turned a whiter shade of pale."

You may want to challenge this, even post 10 you believe to be better. Go ahead - I bet these won't be my top-ten tomorrow. But then, I'm a fickle creature.

True to what I said at the end, I now want to find a place for a Jefferson Airplane song...and possibly something by the Darkness (Love on the Rocks or Black Shuck).

Maybe that's why his post of similar content got positive ratings? Didn't see any of you sycophantic fuckers criticise his taste in music. Have a nice day, though. Or don't.

Another that does it for me...

Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home"

Come down off your throne and leave your body alone.
Somebody must change.
You are the reason I've been waiting so long.
Somebody holds the key.

[Chorus:]
But I'm near the end and I just ain't got the time
And I'm wasted and I can't find my way home.

Come down on your own and leave your body alone.
Somebody must change.
You are the reason I've been waiting all these years.
Somebody holds the key.

[Chorus]

But I can't find my way home.
But I can't find my way home.
But I can't find my way home.
But I can't find my way home.
Still I can't find my way home,
And I ain't done nothing wrong,
But I can't find my way home.

Magic to my ears. Not enough people listen to Blind Faith.
