Today, Tuesday June 28th, bill C-38 passed final reading in the House of Commons in Canada, paving the way for legalization of homosexual marriage. From here, it must pass through the senate (rubber stamp and full of Liberals) and be approved by the Governor General (no problem here, either, since Adrienne does what Paul tells her). We can expect it to be on the books by September.

This is a huge deal for Canada. We're only the third country in the world (behind the Netherlands and Belgium) to legalize homosexual marriage. In response to the recent decisions by the Supreme Court of Canada - that denying homosexuals the right to marry is unconstitutional - the Prime Minister and the governing party did NOT attempt to perform an end-run around the law by amending the constitution, but rather put in place legislation legalizing said marriage.

There are plenty of checks in place explicitly stating that religious institutions will NOT be required to perform any ceremonies they do not wish. So this does NOT constitute a violation of religious freedom. It is, however, an issue of equality under the law. Canada is two steps away from truly recognizing homosexuals as equal Canadians.

I feel a strange sense of affection for Paul Martin on this issue. Pauly-Boy inherited this time bomb from his predecessor, Jean "Everything I Do Will Fall Apart One Year After I'm Gone" Chretien. Paul also inherited (or was a part of, depending on how you view this one) the sponsorship scandal that currently still plagues our radio, television and newspaper media. While I don't believe for an instant that Paul didn't know about the sponsorship ad scandal, I'm more than willing to forgive the Liberals for that mess because of their drive to legalize homosexual marriage.

Stephen Harper, the ugliest man in politics, comes out of this looking rather poorly. Harper is forced to fight the recognition of homosexual marriages, based on his constituency (Alberta), but he's resorted to crying for the WAAAAHHHmbulance recently. Thwarted on a number of fronts (Belinda Stronach's defection, losing the confidence motions at the beginning of June, failing to block the NDP-driven budget), Harper has been getting cranky and desperate about his lack of influence in the house.

I don't like Stephen Harper, and I could devote an entire post to what I think of him and his politics, but I'll try to stay on topic. Harper recognized that the Conservatives didn't have enough votes to block the bill - even after 35 Liberal MPs, including one cabinet member, Joe Comuzzi, voted against the legislation - and began to decry the bill as "lack[ing] legitimacy" because the Liberals depended on the Bloc Quebecois to pass it. The Bloc is the federal party that represents the sovereigntist interests of Quebecers in Ottawa, and has 54 seats in the current parliament, a large number. The Bloc is traditionally a socially progressive party, reflecting the progressive nature of the majority of Quebecers. That Harper would question the bill's legitimacy based on the support of the Bloc is laughable at best, since Harper's party teamed up with the Bloc in an effort to bring down the government a month ago. How is your party's alliance with separatists any different than the Liberal's, Stephen?

To rescue this post from Harper-bashing, let me sum up by stating one more time: I am proud of my country and its government for recognizing the basic right to marriage for all consenting citizens, regardless of sexual orientation.

That's reigning Uberlord and grown-man Jack McCallum, ladies and gentlemen. Running a fine comb of analysis through the work of an AUTISTIC 18-YEAR-OLD.

Fuck that. If you can't get your shit together enough to write a coherent story then you deserve to be ridiculed in a writing contest. Why the fuck bother to enter? Seriously, if writing isn't your thing (say, perhaps that shitty animations are your thing instead) then WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU IN UBERMADNESS!!!

While I'm ranting, I'd like to ask a rhetorical question: who the fuck voted for "author" #2? People who were hoping for an easy by into round two! Way to go, fuckers... I hope to god that Genko's endless river of tears weighs on your collective conscience.

Well said. Except for the phrase 'endless river of tears'. It makes me look like a whiney bitch. I'd much rather have prefered 'endless stream of curse words and witty retorts' because it portrays me as a bitter asshole, which is much more accurate.

Mr. Moe, I just read your first post. If I may quote:

---------
I marriage is and should be, between men and women, not two men or two women. I don't care if they are Common Law couples and I don't care if they refer to each other as their "life partner". I do care that men will be on a forum saying, "BRB, my husband is calling me". Why? Because then it will be even harder to tell if it is a guy or a girl.
----------

This stunningly apt summation of the matter at hand totally refutes my post. Well done, sir.

Feijuada, that's Stephen Harper. I know you think all Canadians are fags, and believe me, the feeling is mutual. As to why Mr Harper is in front of the American flag, I have no idea. I'm not sure he does, either.

FelizJBirth, I'm with you. I say we do everything in our power to provoke an invasion. Let's legalize pot. Let's flood North Dakota by blocking the Devil's Lake project:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/cpress/20050614/ca_pr_on_na/devil__s_lake

Let's force churches to marry marines to penguins. Let's actively encourage terrorists to slip across the border - in fact, fuck that, let's smuggle them across the border ourselves in grain shipments. Let's flood the American market with cheap lumber and cattle - what? Oh. Right. THAT mess.

Genko, let's not get carried away.

Ah, I just addressed this issue on my very first post at Ubersite!

I don't think they should be wed but nobody really cares what I think anyways so it doesn't really make a difference.

What I found funny in this whole ordeal is the fact that Bloc Quebecuois voted for this. I mean, the Bloc is pretty conservative, in my opinion, possibly more conservative than the Progressive Conservatives but that's just because they're Quebecois and nobody wants them anyways :P (I kid, I love my french-speaking brethrehn... except for the separatists... ie. the Bloc)

Meh, since I'm not gay, this doesn't affect me and therefore I don't care.

Yawn. Canuks, fags - really what's the difference anyway?

Well, to Canadians it makes a difference and there are a number of us on the site.

I have never seen a reason to make gay marriage illegal and have only ever had to take a stance on it as a result of talking to people who oppose it. Kind of like the only reason I'm an atheist is because someone created the idea of God in the first place.

The only thing about the gay marriage thing that really interests me is how much it must piss off the Republicans as I'm sure Martin knows. After the recent Supreme Court ruling I think we should legalize weed immediately in order to guarantee a summer invasion. Just my two cents.

I was watching the vote on CPAC and when I told my roommate I was for the homos to get married, she looked at me like I was wearing a purple jumpsuit and waving a rainbow flag in her face.

Alberta is filled with redneck morons. Fuck Harper and fuck King Ralph. It's shit to deny adults who pay their taxes and make an honest living something so simple as equal rights. All the organizations that paid money to protest the vote should have donated that money to the poor or something worth while.

AGAIN: Seperation of church and state! AHHHHHHHHHHH!
