A pair of wings, powerful in their delicacy, glistening as they fold and freeze. The magnificent maw, masticating without end, perpetually devouring itself. Eyes molded after the fire within, seething with hatred and a promise of vengeance. Impervious skin, designed to secure the life of one so endangered, so despised, that this little indemnity is almost ironic.
While the creature rests, it ponders what could have been. The wars it has borne witness to, the generations of life passing by as the ticking of a clock, the immense weight of the human condition in all of its flaws- these trials exhaust the energies that must now be conserved, lest it all be enacted in vain. To point, what is the purpose to all of this life, if not perpetuation? What reason could remain to endure the endless miasma of negative emotion, if not for the hope of something better? There cannot be any betterment of this scenario when the protagonist has ceased to exist.
And yet, hope is not lost for this parent, a protectorate of the blossoming life within its shell. She may be expelling her finality here, on these shores, at any moment. Look closer, and you will witness the shift in her complexion, along with the varying shades of the nictating membrane. The serpent is aware, but she is approaching a plateau of non-functionality that is foreign to her.
This cold territorialism is inherent, not a trait to revel in; rather, a necessity. There is a simplistic beauty in her actions: to secure, to keep alive, to protect. She has sacrificed all of herself to spread her life.
The body may die, but the story continues. It is the nature of life, to go on living- only the sacrifice of the self holds a deeper meaning.

I have one dragon, it's the Tiamat ToyFare edition, about 3'x1'. It kind of inspired this, in a roundabout fashion. Hard to explain, and I'm making myself look like an even bigger dork, I'll be shutting up now.

If you can drop your voice and make love to a microphone with that stuff --there's a future for you with the Discovery channel.
