She pushed her hands deep into the sand, enjoying the transition from warm to cool, rough to smooth. The sun was straight overhead, unrelenting in its battle against her pale skin and brittle hair.
The waves lapped at the shore, coming near to where she lay, then slinking slowly back towards the blue abyss.
Looking out over the ocean made her melancholic. It made her think of the vastness of both life and death. It served to remind her how lonely she was, and how lonely she would always be. Even if she wasn't alone, there was always the empty feeling deep inside. The knowledge that nobody would ever know her deep secrets.
Her secrets weren't small things. She didn't have the normal secrets like, "I have a foot fetish" or "I take dance lessons". No, her secrets were huge, and tied in to her fundamental belief system.
Her secrets were the kind of secrets that would make mothers shriek and babies cry.
Her secrets were made of the things M. Knight Shyamalan would like to project on to the silver screen.
But here on the beach, with her hands deep in the sand, she found momentary solace. As long as the water didn't creep up and catch her by surprise, she would be able to forget about her cryptic secrets, and pretend to be normal.
She could be like everyone else.
A small boy ran by without noticing her, yet his mother, forgetting her manners, could not look away from her hideous nose.
These things happened every day; she had finally become accustomed to this. Usually the stares started at her nose, slowly travelled the length of her body, noticing her wrecked legs, and ended at her hands. Usually the observer cringed and hurried away. The sand protected her hands from the beam of this mothers eagle eye, and her prone position made her misshapen legs look nearly normal.
When she was alone again, she pulled her hands from the damp sand, and ran them through her hair. Her hair was rough and matted a bit near her scalp and she worked at the thick black mess with her long fingernails.
While her hands were tangled in her hair, her mind started to tangle around her past. It placed blame, it called foul, it cried and it mourned. More than anything, she'd love to go home. She'd love to wear the clothes she was accustomed to, she'd love to ride around, careless and proud. She'd love to believe she was powerful once again.
As she was lost in her reverie, she failed to notice the waves slowly encroaching upon her space. She was quickly reminded of her secrets and her shame when one sole wave lapped up against her heel, and her skin melted away, revealing a bit of bone.
All of this, and it was Dorothys fault. There truly is no place like home.

It is a book by Gregory Maguire (I think I spelled that wrong) about the 'real' story of the Wicked Witch of the West. Like, the Wizard of Oz is actually doing bad things, and she's fighting against him but he makes her out to be evil to the people because otherwise they might listen to what she says, etc etc. It's a pretty good book, and they made a musical out of it that's on Broadway right now. It's not great, but it's pretty damn good.
Mostly, this was just an alternative story about the WWotW, so it reminded me and apparently someone else about the book/musical.

What's Wicked? I was thinking more along the lines of Wizard of Oz.

What the fuck is this? Like, Musical Day or something? Steve and rad were talking about Avenue Q over on Steve's post, and now you with Wicked?
And yes, I know that it's a book as well. It just reminded me. Damnit, this hurricane thing is annoying.

Oh, dude, it took me forever to get this. I thought, "How is this hilarious? Corinne is a sick, twisted woman." Now I think, "This is hilarious. Corinne is a sick, twisted woman."
