What is art? When I was at my first lecture in art history, it was defined as:
The manipulation of the elements of style in order to bring a work beyond ordinary function.
I'll admit that this definition does not fit a lot of what is today considered "art." It's always a fine line, too. So many artworks - Egyptian art, for example - were intended for ritual use. Ritual function is rather ordinary, and the so-called art essentially has only functional value. It is only because we make aesthetic judgments about such works that we begin to consider them art.
So it must follow that some artworks have absolutely no function beyond invoking aesthetic judgments. Such works, like the Mona Lisa (which I loathe, but that's another post), have no function in society than to be beautiful and gawked at. If you've ever been to the Louvre and seen the painting, you know what I'm talking about.
What other art is there that has so little function than the art of Uber? The MS paint compositions to me have the unique charm of what one might call outsider art. (I'm sure you've all seen that Simpsons episode so I won't go into explaining outsider art.) The digital works are crude, child-like, and fascinating. They also come from a unique source of inspiration: the drive to create a smashingly funny post, or maybe something more deviant, I'm not sure; unique inspiration nonetheless.
I think the chances for getting an Uber-Outsider art exhibition are very slim, considering that all the gallery snobs of the world are only just recognizing the value of new media technologies in art, whether the artists are insane or not. I still find these works hilarious and entertaining. A recent example: http://www.ubersite.com/m/70250
And it all boils down to one of my favorite quotes:
"What's the difference between a painter who chooses to paint like a child, and a child's painting?" -Joanna Lumley as Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous
Interpretations of art are entirely subjective, all base don personal aesthetic judgments. Remember that some of the Impressionists in their days were poor, prostitute-soliciting drug addicts, but now they are revered. Remember, when you're looking at art, don't admire it because everyone else does, use your own tastes to judge whether you like a work.
And even more importantly, just because you may be one of those artists that uses their own shit to draw, that does not mean it still doesn't stink.

Do you like abuse? Do you enjoy seeing what insults you can attract?
Why doesn't a seemingly intellegent girl like yourself find a more suitable place for expressing herself? Some place where she might recieve positive feedback?
And quit naming shit like it has pics in it. I think you're just trying to fuck with us now.

I agree. Would this be considered a part of what you call "Uber Art"?

I was very unimpressed with the Mona lisa when I saw it.

interesting post, raine. however, why are people going to enjoy this? its too dry. this is the internet, home of the millisecond attention span - the reason why habeeb is apparently so popular. you need to add something to this, a little hook to get peopl einterested in your point of view. i suggest you think about what youre writing, and how far off the handle you can get about it, whilst still remaining lucid.
course, thats what i try to do, and it doesnt really appear to work for me.
just stick with hyperbole, it is your best friend.

Here's a handy guide for those of you new to the UberGuggenheim (say it five times fast!) - if it has fusion or peener in it, it is art. Otherwise, it's not art.
Got it?
