Erlkönig - ein Gedicht du Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (a poem by Goethe)

A really crappy midi for those of you who have not heard Beethoven's musical setting for this piece.
http://www.lvbeethoven.com/Oeuvres/Music_OdeToJoy.html

---

What follows is the original 1785 version of Schiller's work.

Beethoven added a line of his own prior to the beginning of the ode in the 4th movement of his 9th
symphony. You must understand that the entire symphony is dark and brooding until we get up to here.

"O freunde, nicht diese Tone/ Sondern last uns angenehmere anstimmen/ und freudenvollere"

"Oh friends, no more of these tones/ Let us sing more cheerful songs, more full of joy!"

I prefer interpretations done by German orchestras when it comes to Beethoven.

Omg some day when you are online I'll send you the Berlin Philharmonic playing the 9th! OMG! Won't that be awesome?

You need to get real drunk, eat some shrooms, poke some smot, then listen to teh 9th.

Makes you want to do the ol' in out in out along with some of the ultraviolence.

I've only played Beethoven's first symphony, so nothing spectacular or anything. Maybe me not liking the symphonies has to do with the fact that I typically dislike vocal works (unless it's lieder), and the greatest of his symphonies features vocal stuff.

I'm not denying the fact that they are great pieces, but if I'm looking to listen to a symphony, I'll typically skip over the Beethoven.

I find, and possibly because they are more numerous, that you can pick out the transition from classical to romantic more so with his piano sonatas.

It's not suddenly cool.

It's the fact that "I" can post them and be well recieved.

I mean, some n00b, such as yourself, couldn't pull this off.

and you cannot tell the the 9th isn't the shizznit.

Well I love Beethoven's late piano sonatas, and the late string quartets too... but his symphonies... I don't know. They're just nothing special to me.

I mean, which symphony is it, the 8th? Where he based a movement on the metronome? How lame.

Prime example.

There is a motiv in the last 50 bars or so of the last movement that is a direct predecessor to that classic jazz/blues bassline you hear in "Rock around the Clock"

Pull up the "new world" symphony. There are some harmonic structures in there that really pave the way for later jazz and blues (and of course from this rock) music.

Dvorak is the European-American connection, the best example of transition between the old and new worlds.

In my humble opinion.

To be fair, the connection between Stravinsky and modern rock music was not my idea originally - it was first suggested by the greatest english professor I have ever had the pleasure of attending lectures by in college. Additionally, I try to stay away from the different genres of rock music, for the most part - I've found that keeping them straight is too complicated, and I have a tough time hearing the difference between many of them anyway. So, what I'm thinking of could be progressive; I really don't know what its specific label is.

As far as Mike Patton goes, I don't think there is a genre that he would fit into well. I don't know what your listening habits are, but he has done work with the Melvins and Faith No More, just to name a couple of different bands. The song I referenced earlier, "Ars Morendi" is on the album California, released by his band Mr. Bungle. I originally found the song intriguing because for portions of it, they rely heavily on the foundations of eastern european folk music, which I feel made the comparison back to Stravinsky that much easier.

I don't know about a Dvorak influence as much, just because I haven't listened to him as often. I'll go searching through my collection and see what I can pull up tonight.

I, at this time, fail to grasp the connection of stravinsky to modern rock. Progressive rock, maybe, but not modern.

I see more of a Dvorak influence.

True, they are not technically classical period composers. I was just using the term classical in the more common sense, being European music excluding folk or pop. Or, the way many of my coworkers in the garage would put it, "Oh, yeah, the old stuff with all the wierd instruments in it."
<sigh>

Anyway, I can still compare the two. While Beethoven is arguable the greatest Romantic composer to live, I will always prefer the more Modernist approach to classical orchestral arraingments, most notably Stravinsky, and to a lesser degree, Tchaikovsky. (And yes, I realize that Tchaikovsky normally falls uner the Romantic period as well, but I feel he was one of the transitionary figures, much like Beethoven as you mentioned earlier.)

If I can ever drag it up, I'll post my thesis that Stravinsky is the great-grandfater of modern rock music, tracking his influence through jazz and blues, and by finally running a direct comparison between "Rite of Spring" and (you've got to love this) "Ars Morendi" by Mike Patton.

Goose, you have to admit, neither Beethoven nor Stravinsky are classical composers.

Early Beethoven, maybe, but by his 9th symphony he was a full Romantic.

and Stravinsky, well, he was a post-romantic modernist.

Bravo on the translation, and perhaps bringing some culture to Uber - its a nice offset to the -2DIEs I was expecting when i read through your post.

However, I think Stravinsky will always be the superior classical composer, especially after you listen to the Rite of Spring. It's still the only ballet I'm willing to witness.

I am taking your poem here and will give it a good looking into. In high school, AP english out senior year, our teacher left 1/3 of the way through due to breast cancer. The substitute decided we would spend the rest of the year doing poetry. We read some things, one I recall being Beowulf, and then focused the rest of the time on The Romantics, Shelley, Byron, Coleridge, Wordsworth, and a few others . I truly enjoyed it.

that really is too bad.

Poetry is just prose with better imagery.

for the GCSE English exam (all kids take it at 16) they have to learn this Poetry Anthology. It's enough to put everyone off all poetry for life.

And honestly, how many people have taken the time to learn just this much about this piece?

And what it means?

AND SOME OF THIS STUFF IS STILL VALID AND GOOD AND RELEVANT IN TODAY'S WORLD.

IF YOU JUST TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK.

beethoven (anyone else always pronounce it beeth oven after bill & teds? no just me? okay) is a mere child compared to the genius of Bach.

It really is c1ndy's fault.

She did her stupid bum bum head CSI post and started using it in every review she wrote for about a day or so.

Aha... thanks for the link, rad. Although, I'm still not sure of how it became the new "thing." Actually, I don't care that much. I think I'm going to take an Uberbreak.

Meh. Only been to two weddings in my life and I don't play an instrument.

Just can't help it; Kanon is one of five tunes total that move me to tears every time.

Have another with the knowledge that you don't need to apologize for your opinions.

forgive me, but Pachabel's canon is a trite piece of shit.

Trust me.

After being in chamber groups playing countless weddings, you come to hate that piece.

Second greatest bit of classical music I've ever heard.

Best is Pachelbel's Kanon.

Hark, what's that?
