Podcasts will cancel themselves out as an entertainment medium (Rant) (474 hits)

Podcasts are a fairly new medium of information in the overall scheme of things. Those of us that keep ourselves informed have known about podcasts for quite some time. A compressed audio file, hosted on a webserver, that contains the musings, thoughts, and opinions of the person who creates it. Thousands of people all over the globe make these podcasts every day.

But is anyone really listening to them?

The theory behind the podcast is that it's supposed to enable a person to have their own personal talk radio show. Each week they record a "show" and put it up on the web for others to download. It seems simple enough, and it really is. Anyone with a computer, a microphone, and a very basic knowledge of the internet can create a podcast.

And therein lies the problem.

Let's call a spade a spade, shall we? Podcasts, for all the attention they've been receiving lately, are incredibly boring. The funny ones are anything but, the technological ones repeat the same tech news that everyone read about yesterday, the "anti-establishment" ones are just teenagers and college students bitching about what a horrible country they get to live in, and the political ones are just old men bitching about what a horrible country they get to live in. Having your own radio station is no easy task and the podcast proves it.

The podcast has enabled people to say, "Geez, this radio show is boring. I'll make my own!"

At the same time, it has enabled people to say, "Geez, this podcast is boring. I'll make my own!"

So everybody is making podcasts, but nobody is listening to them. If you are reading this right now and thinking, "This reminds me, I have to download so-and-so's latest podcast!" then it's my firm belief that you are too stupid to realize that there are better things on the internet. Like tubgirl.

The podcast will eventually cancel itself out as an entertainment medium for the above stated reason. Nobody listens to them because everyone is too busy making their own, in the misguided hope that someone will listen.

I could be wrong, though. I usually am.

I don't pay attention to this crap. Is this like shoutcasting, but not live?

Shoutcasting was fun.
