State of the Union, or, Why Are Conservative Comic Strips Never as Funny as Liberal Comic Strips? (2341 hits)

For those of you who live in the NYC area and get the Daily News, you should know what I'm talking about.

I'm refering to the conservative-slanted comic strip called, "State of the Union" by Carl Moore. It's relatively new, but after the first few strips I just began skipping over it. It features cameos from Bill Clinton, Jane Fonda, John Kerry, etc. and makes a desperate attempt to be topically funny, like Doonesbury done Republican. At this they fail utterly.

In today's hilarious strip, a Michael Moore look-alike (unshaven and obese) apparently on NPR is denouncing the abuses at Guantanamo Prison. A sign reading "Rights 'R' Us" hangs on the wall behind him.

Michael-Moore-Guy: "Guantanamo? It's nothing but an American torture chamber, baby. Time Magazine says detainees have been forced to go as much as 20 hours without sleep. Several detainees wear that their lamb-kebabs were laced with Kaopectate. These cruel acts are being inflicted on innocent Muslims by Rumsfeld's goons, who..."

At that a pie thrown from offscreen hits the speaker in the face.

As far as humor goes, what the hell is this? What kind of way to end a strip is this, a pie being thrown in the face? Vaudeville is dead, Carl. There's no kind of rebuttal from a conservative character, no reason for the pie being thrown, no statement of any kind made...just a pie striking Michael-Moore-Guy in the side of the head with a "splat" sound effect.

In the political realm, then you really hit the nail on the head, Carl. That's what all us liberals think, that the government is torturing innocent Muslims who never committed a crime against America. Yep, that's us all right. We also support 100% taxation and for every child to be aborted, too. Let's abolish heterosexual marriage while we're at it, us wicked, hedonistic liberals decree that only gays can marry!

Bad people are being held right now at Guantanamo, men captured on the battlefield in Afghanistan, a man who claims to be the 20th hijacker, Taliban operatives and members of al-Qaeda. But what about innocent, unknowing helpers of terrorism who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time? The Time article that "State of the Union" referred to also had an interview from a detainee.

The detainee said that he had been captured in 2001 in Afghanistan, but that he was just an Afghan goatherd who had been caught by American troops and assumed to be a terrorist. For over three and a half years he's been held at Guantanamo, without trial nor conviction.

Although we have to take this man's reports with a grain of salt, it seems that real terrorists are very vocal about what they do. Zacharias Mousaoussi has admitted his role in the 9/11 hijackings and al-Qaeda has taken credit for all their bombings since September 11: Bali, Hilla, Madrid, London...

In times of war, the President usually can bend the rules of the Constitution, like Lincoln during the Civil War or Wilson during WWI, but is it too much to ask that these men be brought before a judge and jury and rightly convicted? There is no doubt for some of these men that they are in al-Qaeda; why can we not just bring them before a UN tribunal or even an American court and give them the penalty they deserve? Why hold them indefinitely without trial?

What Mr. Carl Moore fails to understand is that not all liberals are the same. I might be a liberal, but I could not hold Bush accountable for everything that's going wrong in America, nor can I disregard all of his projects and plans as sheer idiocy. Liberals do not hate America, some can occasionally hate the government that runs America, but never America itself.

If we can't allow and practice the freedoms that our soldiers are defending, then the point of this warfare is useless; America has already lost.

I agree, someone (either Jefferson or Franklin) said "Those who would sacrifice a little freedom for a little more order, deserve neither" We are supposed to play by the rules regardless of who we are dealing with, because we made the rules and certainly expect others to adhere to them.

The pie thing strikes me as a reference to the Anne Coulter fiasco...

Other than that there is nothing I don't already know. Gitmo' (ugh) has it's right and wrong, and both sides are going to spin it as best as they can to prove themselves right. Partisan politics like totally rock and stuff!

That is quite a dumb comic, but Michael Moore doesn't have long hair. I don't think it is portraying him. That being said, political comics are for the most part a niche market. They are tailored to certain people. If you don't get the joke, then it probably isn't tailored to you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I could agree with that except for the fact that the humor isn't just indecipherable, but nonexistent. It's a pie in the face, with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

Yeah and whats up with that Mallard Fillmore comic? I've read Family Circle comics that have made me laugh then that uninspired dreck.

And when he was getting his panties tied up over being in Jon Stewart's book, man that was just pathetic

Having said that, i'm a conservative. This is merely cos im a greedy fuck, i fully accept that the Liberals have the moral and intellectual upper ground, but i prefer tax cuts.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Well that's understandable. No problemo.

And yes, this is FAR worse than the duck comic.

That comic is hilarious. But in a laughing AT way.

The reason why Liberal comic material is usually better than conservative is because Liberals are generally credited with a greater intellectual appreciation of subtlety. This is due to the fact that many Liberal ideas are the result of more dedicated thought, hence the reason why norms are being challenged. Republicans, on the other hand, work on a "values" based ideological system and, as such, respond better to humor that sates their need to seem "right". Being superior is vital to many conservatives and is reflected in the often bland derogatory material of pundits like Coulter.

Having said that, i'm a conservative. This is merely cos im a greedy fuck, i fully accept that the Liberals have the moral and intellectual upper ground, but i prefer tax cuts.

ALSO-

Conservatives in general don't seem to have the sense of humor that liberals do.

Short answer:
Because BAD things are happening and have always happened to keep US where we are.
It's hard to make 'funny' of those realities.
Been around for 11(?) presidents and a Republican for 8(?)
Think.....Oil...Oil....Oil...all the way back to WWII and Vietnam
Watch the next 18 months, for this president has lied to the American people, and the world
in general, more than any other in history, and is close to getting caught.
If Rowe falls(FatBottom?) or whatever derogatory name Bush always calls his various staff
members (The New Yorker), then the shit is going to hit the fan.

I can only hope.

Don't bother deluding yourself that our legal system is anything more than a blatant farce.

I can never feel like I've "failed in life" for not applying myself towards a lucrative career in the system because (and I'm shocked more people can't see the obvious) it's so -blatantly- phony and destructive- towards everything!

I want to be an organic blueberry farmer and an author. Fortunately, I've already made a fair pile of dough by buying stocks earlier on. Yes, I'm a lucky son of a bitch, and no, the stocks weren't environmentally fucked up ones; at least, not like most of them out there.

That is the most retarded comic I've ever seen. It's just stating the other guys' argument and then throwing a pie in the face as if to say, "See the pie on his face? That means he's wrong!"

Ahhhh, Theo-Con reasoning.

It goes hand-in-hand with the goofy rhyming name thing they do for "enemies."

Uh, so. Let's have a conversation. Uh, I think we'll find that we have
very little in common.
