You were shivering and sweating. Your chest could hardly contain your speeding heart. Your eyes were injected with the blood all from a sleepless night, and your mind was an emptied shell. You could not have been any more prepared, and yet felt any less prepared. Suddenly, quitting did not seem the coward's choice. Risking rejection all for a grade now did not seem worth the pain. Retreating seemed the wise thing to do, but you wanted to be sublime, and everybody to be calling your name.
-"Jin Hen, you're up"
You stood up from your seat, and started the march. You wanted to shout out all those dreary thoughts you had held with in your self for so long, but nevertheless, your feet just kept barely moved. Walking from your seat to the podium was just like the pain from walking over bright red-hot-coals; just the idea of reaching it seemed like burning in Nebuchadnezzar's furnace itself. Finally, as you reached the podium, you put your papers down and tried to think of knowledge, your mind still so full of fear.
-"OK, everyone quiet. Let's listen to what Jin Hen has to say"
Your mouth opened, and you tried to speak like a man, but your voice broke and they all could feel your pain. You wanted them to interrupt you; you wanted an excuse to shut up; an excuse to blame your silence on. But no one spoke, and you kept babbling and stuttering. You looked at them and they looked at you. How frightful were those eyes! You felt them piercing through your heart, one little needle at a time. They started feeling sorry for you: you only wanted them to applaud you.
You finally decided to do what you must, to speak up. You dug into your heart and threw out one by one all the things you had within. You played your soul's tune and found resonance in theirs. You discovered that they were not different from you. They were just as scared and insecure as you, that there was nothing to be afraid of. They were all just a group of people waiting for someone to tell them how they should feel, and that someone was you.
You couldn't speak in a simpler way, yet you couldn't speak more eloquently. Every single statement you preached had a hidden truth that would finally enable them to see the light. Your theories and thoughts about life did not seem so stupid after all. This time, you saw them, they saw you, and you each saw into each other's souls. You felt your heart go light for the first time in years.
You would never be the same after that.
You had finished your first speech.

Not bad. Helps being drunk if you ever have to speak in front of a large audience.
