Hey everyone!
All the matches in round one action are posted and waiting for your vote! There are a lot of really close games (some are tied, some separated by 5 votes or less).
There's only about 24 hours left to vote in this round. Voting officially ends tomorrow Thursday July 21st at noon, eastern time.
Just wanted to stir the pot. That and I am going through withdrawls not seeing the UM logo on the front page.
Here's a picture of a dog with two legs. He'll bite you in the ovaries if you don't vote.

Mike, we've decided to interpret this rule to mean that if you reveal the identity of yourself or your opponent before the deadline has passed INTENTIONALLY, AND/OR to attempt to garner more votes, it is a DQ.
We're letting the accidental one's (Bellebrown, AlwaysAnEagle, Electro, MandaPanda, maiorano84) slide this time and telling people to be more careful in future rounds. This thing can only work if it is anonymous so let's keep it that way.

In a normal match, there will be two competitors for the same title, and thus two posts are made. Now when there are two people competing, only the person with the most votes gets to move on, where the other is eliminated.
So, with a forfeit, one person has already admitted defeat by choosing to submit nothing, so the person who actually submitted will get through to the next round automatically, it doesn't matter what their vote total is.
However, if the uber public votes on a forfeit match, and they think the single entry is so bad that the forfeit actually wins (the forfeit gets more votes than the entry), the person who submitted the entry will lose to a forfeit and a bye will fill in for the winner of that match in the next round. This doesn't happen often, but it has in the past.

Just a comment...
I'm thankful that we even get to compete in something like this at all. I'm sure it's a lot more work than it looks like, and it must be a pain in the ass to deal with incredibly ignorant and ungrateful criticism. The product may be flawed, but it's a work in progress and anyone who expects it to be smooth and perfect is just an idiot.
So, thanks, UM Commitee. Though not many are saying it, your hard work IS appreciated.

Well it seems like the whole world knows who won and who didn't so I don't see any problems.
I don't, but I have a feeling that there are going to be some DQ's that don't happen for one reason or another.
Not that I particularly care, but rules are rules I suppose. I'll wait until the final winners are posted and see if I'm right.

If someone has got a high score on the forfeit ones - and its actually a higher score than the entries that had two people - do they get through to the next round?

In a normal match, there will be two competitors for the same title, and thus two posts are made. Now when there are two people competing, only the person with the most votes gets to move on, where the other is eliminated.
So, with a forfeit, one person has already admitted defeat by choosing to submit nothing, so the person who actually submitted will get through to the next round automatically, it doesn't matter what their vote total is.
However, if the uber public votes on a forfeit match, and they think the single entry is so bad that the forfeit actually wins (the forfeit gets more votes than the entry), the person who submitted the entry will lose to a forfeit and a bye will fill in for the winner of that match in the next round. Maybe next time, when confronted with so many defaults, go back to the original list/send
an E-mail to the next least liked club member(in order) and give them 12hrs(?) to submit
a substitute post.
It would have only backed up the contest less than a half a day.
Add to that, just the receipt of a last minute invitation would have done wonders for the
individuals who had only received 2,3 or whatever votes.

I wholly approve of the way Q's running this. The beginning could have taken less than two months, but I trust he'll fix that next time. I was on the UM committee for UMII and it was no picnic, but it wasn't the most difficult thing in the world. The two most difficult things were getting everyone together at one time, since AJ and Jared were jerking each other off most of the time, and getting Bart to get off his big, fat, lazy ass and spend more than the 99% of his time that he already spends on this pointless website. What a jerk..
Anyway, decisions were generally made pretty quickly, but then Q, Jared, and AJ would spend hours trying to find ways to stack three penises on end to finally match my awesome size. The only trouble came when everyone decided to be huge pussies by trying to cater to everyone. From what I've seen so far, Q has stamped down on the bullshit and just made rules that apply to most everyone. They should have started the comp on a Monday so most of the people on this website could continue to be drains on our economy, but that can be fixed next time. For now, Alan Greenspan sleeps soundly.
Q has done a decent job. I hope he's the Committee guy next time and uses commmon sense, not anecdotal evidence, to run the competition.

I know I didn't compete, you sossy British strumpet. I didn't sign up because I didn't have time to write anything over the next few weekends, when the writing is scheduled to take place. I have multiple weddings, visits to my parents, and cottage-weekends that I had already planned. I would have either forfeited or entered something that was utter crap because I wrote it in ten minutes.
As I've said in other UM posts, I think shifting the writing schedule so it takes place half over the weekend and half during the week would provide a little more free time for writing (e.g. writing from sunday to wednesday or wednesday to sunday instead of friday to monday) for those people who have weekend plans. It IS the summer, after all. Maybe in the winter it wouldn't be as big a deal, but so many people go away on weekends this time of year.
What I'm SAYING is, I'm glad the opportunity is even there in the first place. I kind of regret not competing, but it would have driven me mad. At least I get to read some extra fiction on this site, even though some of it hurt my brain.

Right.. Bob and ETS, you're right about the number of contestants last time.
ETS, it's okay. I understand that you guys have problems with the the set up this time around, and you're right to voice your opinion.
The way I chose to run it was "stick to the plan" despite the complaints about the overall set-up. That way we can see what did and did not work and tweak it for next time. If we had been making MAJOR changes in the middle of the starting stages, UM III never would've got off the ground at all.
I am always open to suggestion and take everyone's comments with equal weight. What you have to understand is that UM III is the first prototype of a system that is intended to please everyone based on comments from the previous two UM's. UM IV will be the next step, and so on, until we perfect it for our purposes. For example, if everyone truly doesn't like the qualifying method as is, be vocal about it, and things will change. But please don't take it out on the people who take time out of their day to make it happen.
I agree that the Random Joe feature was useful for past UM's.
The decision on energy drop is that it is a legitimate match. Neither Matt or Amanda are going to be DQ'ed based on the prior accusations..
Same with everyone else for now. No DQ's this round so far.

And here's another thing. The plan to have people submit an original entry was there right from the word go. The idea is perfectly sound. It is there to give lesser known authors of equal skill a chance to enter.
It is just a shame that there was not enough competition for the space available.
If you want to bitch about it, take it up with Razor. It was his vision, we implemented it.
One thing that I do see that would make an improvement would be to chop the field to 64 from the word go. We've struggled to fill 128 spots two years in a row now, even with increased interest and popularity, and I don't see that trend changing.

Plus, you could have had plenty of people participating this time. Anticipation was high. People wanted to play. Then it was dragged on and on and on until people said 'fuck it'.
All you had to do was take the post that people had already pointed to in the popular vote and use that for the committeee picks. I know it was suggested several times. It was just more or less ignored.

This post contains NEWS RELATED TO THE COMPETITION. People are always asking me when the deadlines are, and since we've moved to a new format, I thought it would be kind of me to remind people of that in a new post and not hidden away as a review in one of my old UM posts. It's either this or the uberboard and I don't feel like spending my money to tell you guys to vote when this is much better at spreading the word.
I don't do this shit for hits. I'm not a psycho like you and couldn't give a shit about how many hits I have. I have no idea why Razor chooses to post his opinions of UM under the UM logo when he could just as easily e-mailed the committee with his thoughts. That's a whole other story. I put NEWS REALTED TO UM under this logo because people see the logo, see my name, and figure it has something to do with the competition. It's not like I did this and posted "I think UM is fun! Keep up the good work guys!".

From now on, I propose we consider forfeits a case of someone chickening out beneath the might of their prospective opponent, and close calls a case of 'tough shit, better luck next time'.
Enough with the second chance talk. This is a cut-throat, dog-eat-dog world. We don't tolerate weakness, and we won't tolerate second chances. Byes is the only fair way to do it. It's either 'give a free pass to a winner' or 'give a second chance to a loser'.
