I don't really know how it happened, but I'm down here. In the cracks.
Everything was going pretty good, and somehow, I just slipped. I lost that job. Like so many of you, I was living right on the edge. The jackals closed in, took everything worth anything and left me out in the cold.
She left somewhere between slipping and losing. Fighting about the money. She liked her nice things and soft pillows more than she liked me, I guess. I loved her a lot, and I don't even know where she is. Maybe that was my first warning. No soul, just a body... always needed more of something, never happy with what we had. I couldn't see it.
I sure see it now. All around.
Life in the shadow will open your eyes a little wider.
You can't seem to see me anymore. At least, thats what it feels like. Only a partial vision out of the corner of your eye. Can't see me straight on, can you?
I cried the first time I had to scrounge in the trash for food, out behind a restaurant I wouldn't dare eat in a year ago. I laid there in the dark in a ratty old blanket and listened to the slow drip of water into the muck, and felt the chill creep in from the concrete while my eyes leaked.
I lost my mind somewhere in there, under the tunnel night after night. Well, you think so, anyhow. Faceless demons dressed in suits and skirts, with heels that click and clack on the street. Some of them can see. They're cruel. Scare me, cause it's all so fast and bright out there, and my heart just doesn't think it can keep up anymore.
Truth is, I'm dead. Soul departed some night for better places, find a new home. Can't blame it.
Body just won't lay down and stay down, but maybe that other part of me had the right idea. Maybe one day I just won't get out of the way in time.

Santa Cruz was at one point the murder capital of the world. Most of them probably happened on those railroad tracks. I used to live right next to them, and when I didn't have parents to harrass me about curfews and whatnot, I would walk home at two or three in the morning, all by myself, and I'm lucky I didn't get killed.
