Two hairs on her arm stand out among the rest. They are just above a scar on her wrist, black and long. She has a secret desire to rip them out, she tells me, but she wouldn't know what she would do if she couldn't look at them anymore. She just noticed them today, and they have become her new obsession.

"Tell me a secret," she says softly.
"I don't have any secrets," I reply.
"Oh, come on! You gotta have a secret. EVERYBODY'S got secrets."
"And why should I tell you mine?"
"Because—because I'm pretty."
"Oh really?"
"Yes, really."
"Then what's your secret?"
"My secret is that I have no secrets!"

She tells me she remembers being eight, and standing in the cold. White, she sees. White.
"Mahhhhhwm!" she screams, her breath frosted, her nose red, tears becoming ice chips on her face.
Sometimes, she says, she still feels helpless—frozen in that moment.

She looks at me like she is concentrating really hard on the middle of my face.
"You ever stare at something for so long that it becomes this big blur?" she asks like she is bored.
"No, why would I do that?"
"I don't know; for fun."
"Hm. Let me try." I stare intently into her left eye, waiting for the blur to take shape.
"What?" she asks.
"What, what?"
"Why are you staring at me like that?"
"Uh... I was trying to find a way to stare at you so you'd ask me what I was staring at you for."
"No you weren't you liar. You were trying to find out my secrets!!!"
One of many pillows interrupts my gaze.

Things wrong about her, according to her:
"Gargantuan" nose.
Thighs too big.
Stomach even bigger.
Her face isn't symmetrical.
"Whose is?" I venture, mildly annoyed.
She's scratching at a mosquito bite located on her lower back, left side. "Well, I don't know, but there's gotta be. I'm sure there're awards for it somewhere."
What did she just say? "Awards?"
"Yeah, you know, like at modeling shows and stuff."
"I'm sure they really don't pay that much attention. If you get an award for that, they must have scrutinized your face. And if they did that to you personally, you'd have an even bigger complex."
"I don't have a complex," she says indignantly. Childishly. "You don't see what I see."
At this moment, I have the urge to start singing that song. But I don't, and let the silence take over.
