Jeremy lay on his back, powerless over his faculties. Despite the downward cycle he had been riding for months, he couldn't have felt better if he wanted to. The ecstasy of his condition drilled an apathy to his surroundings right down to the core of his spine. As he took another drag off of his cigarette, he closed eyes and found his internal nirvana, another wave of disorientation and eventual nothingness.

Jeremy's old job seemed so distant to him now, especially when he was cognizant enough to think about it for more than 5 seconds at a time. The pressure of being the general marketing manager for his company was intolerable at times. Anybody would have understood his urge to balance out all of that stress with some forced relaxation. Heroin might sound harsh, but for Jeremy, it was the only way to attain peace.

It didn't seem so bad, really. One of his buddies grew a few opium poppies in his garden, well protected and disguised so that nobody would catch them in passing. He gave Jeremy a little taste of what he was missing out on, and when he found out the degree to which Jeremy had accepted opium to his daily regimen, he helped him start growing his own. He showed him everything- how to milk the poppy, how to process the milk, and how to eventually use it to find "God", amongst all of the other things he discovered while intoxicated. From there, he branched out on his own and found a way to get by without his friend's help. He had become a self-sufficient user.

In the beginning, it didn't really affect his work life at all- in fact, in Jeremy's mind, it was helping him deal with the problems he had tolerated for so long without any release to turn to. Yes, his career was going to advance, along with his paycheck, now that he had the catharsis he needed. He would give it up, of course, as soon as the project he was working on was completed. "All I need to do is get through this month, finish up all of my work for this account and enjoy a laid back weekend, and I'll give the stuff up", he pondered as he psyched himself up for another night of unadulterated, opiated bliss.

He began slipping on his work, which inversely prompted him to use more of his treasured substance. His scarcely significant "girlfriend" had left him a few weeks back, and work was going so poorly for him, and he just needed that boost, just something to mellow his nerves. It didn't control him, dammit, he controlled it. Completing this project became his only goal, and heroin became the vehicle.

Abruptly, he was let go. Let go from the job that had once held him in such high esteem- the CEO simply couldn't allow the tardiness and incompletion and overall incompetence to go on any longer. Somebody had to get this work done, and Jeremy's constant assurances that it would happen failed to match up with his actions. His work was suffering from an outside source, they said, and they wouldn't allow his mistakes to be theirs any longer.

From here, things began to snowball into oblivion rather quickly. After losing his job, he decided to take a vacation for a week or two- just to clean himself up and reacquaint himself to the successful Jeremy that he remembered. A week to overcome the initial trauma that most acknowledge as withdrawal, then a week to reestablish his old work ethic at home. Surely, this was the way to go. One more high, just tonight, and then it was all over.

It boggles the mind, how incorrect his assessment was. After 4 months, he ran out of money and was ousted from his upscale apartment for failure to pay his bills, and a few complaints from neighbors who were concerned about his well-being. He decided to move in with a buddy who supplied him with his fix when he ran out of what he had grown. Together, they spent nearly every waking moment in a euphoric haze.

And so we return to the beginning. Jeremy lays on his back smoking and thinking, thinking and smoking. "Does he give up the drugs?", you may be wondering. That isn't my story to tell. "Does he die?" Well... I won't plretend to know, or to not know, the answer to that- let's just say, for the time being, that not all of us have a morbid streak. Maybe he finally discovers the errors of his ways before he is fully consumed. Who's to say? The ending lies in his hands... and maybe in his veins.

Not every story has an ending, and not every ending deserves a story.

sorry. I am not upset at all. I'm just seeing what happens if you mix cocodamol and red wine. I think it gets you drunker.

For future reference, you need to bear a couple of things in mind:

1) I am English. Remember everything I do is probably supposed to be ironic. Or sarcastic.

2) If I were ever to become annoyed with you in the future I would not spam your posts with +2s, I would pointedly ignore them.

Haha, sorry about that. I need to remember that tone of voice doesn't carry on to the Internet.

Hahha. Yes, you are right. I remember getting into the EXACT same arguement with Maiorano when I was a n00b. Almost everyone who says that had some sort of multi-post day, so it is easy to catch them in the trap. It wasn't personal, but my response was less than friendly.

All for, for the purpose of clarification:

This was the first thing that came to my mind that wasn't an obvious, direct link to the title when I saw the UM post for "Milk". I waited until today to post it to not be "controversial" during the competition.
