Before I begin, the people who are getting ready to -2 this from the title alone:

FOUR LEGS GOOD. TWO LEGS BAD.

Right?

From the first days we begin learning social studies in schools there is one thing that seems to be etched into our malleable little minds again and again: Greece was democratic, Greece was teh roxors and as such we should be democratic too. There's probably no greater political culture in the west than the pro-democracy stance. People hold pro-democracy rallies, we've begun using "spreading democracy" as a justification to invade and "emancipate" foreign nations, we've even democracised our modern reality TV shows. Democracy is a part of our culture.

And frankly, I can't see what all the big fuss is about.

Myth: Greece was a democracy.
Fact: Greek cities that did run democratically had such tight restrictions on who could vote that in Athens, for instance, only 10,000 out of 200,000 people were given suffrage and those cities that were run democratically were often considered more dangerous because of the irrationality of popular opinion.

Myth: Athenian Democracy was a success.
Fact: Popular causes and wars eventually drained Athenian resources until they ended up conquered by Sparta.

Personally, my beef with democracy is that it lies on one single concept: A popular idea is a good one.

What it doesn't take into account is that the average person is, well, an idiot.

Truly, joe sixpack doesn't have the qualifications to decide what's best for the community. Hell, just look at the support Australian Idol/Next Big Fad of General Stupidity gets and think to yourselves "How does this get so popular? Do I trust these people, who are so obviously swayed by utter crap, to make decisions about my government?"

The answer that comes to my mind is a resounding and echoing "No".

From Jacobins to Bush's government, the people have spoken... and if they were smart enough to realise it, would regret doing so.

So what's the solution?

Intellectual-suffrage.

If we disenfranchised people from the vote until they proved themselves worthy of making qualified decisions about who should govern and how they should do so, a lot of the problems we have in this popularity contest we call universal-suffrage would disappear. Suddenly the man with the PHD, a respectable name and a good understanding of the world theatre would have more influence politically than the idiot who dropped out of school when he was 14 to pursue a career in *insert fucked up career choice here*.

I won't get into deep details of how people would become franchised to vote, though it would have to be through an independent, free course so that money and political leaning wouldn't be an influence on your franchisement. Kind of like a political IQ test. If you take the test and have a good understanding of how a nation is governed you get the vote. Congratulations, you've proven you are entering the ballot boxes with a satisfactory understanding of what you're doing. Is that too much to ask?

Discuss, belittle, -2, do as you will. I'm just sick of the democracy culture that, just like PC, is becoming more and more dangerous to criticise without being labelled a fascist or somesuch.

To be perfectly honest DC I don't actually have an 'Orwellian fear' problem with ID cards, I just don't see any point to them. What exactly am I going to gain? Does it mean I will no longer need to keep a drivers liscene or a passport and that I will no longer need to renew them? That it'll automatically renew them and charge me an addition fee on my National Insurance payments?

If they did I'd be shitting myself to make people get out of my way to the sign up booth.

*sigh* You've missed the point of Democracy a bit me old mucker.

See, it's not about giving everyone equal say in the running of their affairs. That is a bastardisation of the fact you can vote out someone who is deemed by the electorate to be running the affairs badly.

No, the central core of democracy, what it's all about, is to combat the centralisation of power whitin the government. In fact the entire parliamentary system, from the political parties debates and the way the inter-party politics are conducted is all designed to limit each member's power. Holders of public office are rotated in and out of power. Party members stab one another in the back to gain advantage, they lie and cheat as all people do whithin a system intended to limit the damage of such behaviour to the country as a whole.

Now the temptation is to say "well I'm sure we can all agree that I am a pro-activly thinking man who knows what is best for the world so lets all do what I say. Give me all the power" which of course is quite a reasonable assumption. Here's the thing though, what happens when you lose power?
Who's in charge then? Who fills the power vacuum?

I'll tell you; some muppet that isn't you and dosen't fully comprehend the divine dream of yours. Furthermore, no one person can be competent enough to run everyone elses affairs. That's why we handicap the people in charge as best as we can. To stop them from ruining our shit, although I'm sure they'd ruin it with the very best of intentions.

Yes, because we all know that if someone has the nerve to have a different opinion or political leaning than yours, it's because they're a total moron and haven't been 'educated' as to the 'correct' viewpoint. The possibility doesn't even exist that they might have a well-reasoned and concrete reason for their opinions.

I.Q. tests in order to vote?

Intelligence isn't the only thing we want in our leaders. We also want morals, and you can't take a written test on morals.

There's no system of government that is going to prevent large groups of people from fucking up themselves and the environment around them. Human beings simply aren't meant to live in a globalized society. I say we go back to living in isolated tribes of 200-300 people.

A simple few questions when turning up to vote would be excellent. The fact that Howard got in on the strengths of "leadership", "terrorism" and "interest rates" is proof that the system is completely flawed.

That said, the purpose of this questionnaire wouldn't be to weed out the intellectuals from the masses. There are still disagreements between intellectuals - would the popular intellectual decision still be the "correct" one? What I want to make sure is that everybody who votes is informed about the basic issues before they choose incorrectly.

What about an issue like how many hours a work day should be? Do you need a PhD to not want a 20-hour work day?

"If we disenfranchised people from the vote until they proved themselves worthy of making qualified decisions about who should govern and how they should do so . . ."

-You really need to go more in-depth (and yes I realize you said you won't go into deep details now) with an explanation of how someone becomes knowledgeable enough to vote, and what you mean by 'who should govern and how they should do so . . . ." Who knows who should govern/How so on some/a lot of issues? You can back a 'less-free' economy up with all the facts you want on how it helps the people so much more, but there will still be someone saying, "Well, why live if your freedoms are so limited?"

"I won't get into deep details of how people would become franchised to vote, though it would have to be through an independent, free course so that money and political leaning wouldn't be an influence on your franchisement. Kind of like a political IQ test. If you take the test and have a good understanding of how a nation is governed you get the vote."

-Of how a nation is governed? Are you talking about the inner-workings of the government (i.e. three sep. powers in America, constitution, etc.)? Hey, I wonder why things like graduating 8th grade is pretty much required. Of course you could go on about how this doesn't educate us enough, but that is more of an argument about fixing the education system. We in the US had 'political IQ tests' before - didn't go over too well. Used to suppress 'them niggers'. Independent teachings? Are you living in the same world as I?

Plus, there are things your Average Joe knows enough about to make a basic decision on. For instance - Maybe they want a mayor who isn't going to fuck them over in every way possible. This may turn out to be a big problem in poorer districts (that are already easily corruptable) - but now about .01% may get a say. Poor people without 'good educations' could easily be left powerless (And what non-poor person gives enough shits about them to base their decisions on that?) And we know what happens when poor people feel - and/or are - powerless:

"Freedom, equality, brotherhood or death!"

With this I say I am not making a statement that you are wrong in your feelings - I really don't know how to feel about it right now. Just bringing up possible 'flaws' and areas of question.

And the [Western country] Idol thing; there is more than one reason age limits on voting are present.

Yeah, the minute men organization (which simply wanted to patrol the border to keep illegals out)... were called vigilantes by cock-sucking mexican-supporting dickheads like GW Bush & most democrat officials...I sooooo hate GW on this issue. He is a fucking cock sucker... he sucks fox dick. ANyway... the ACLU was "concerned" and going to make sure these guys didn't do anything to hurt the rights of non-citizens so they showed up and would flash their car lights and beep horns warning mexicans that people were there to stop them. And then they'd sit around smoking weed...

Fuckin' liberal ACLU pieces of trash.

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=43867

And then make sure you read a shitbag liberal's take on it:

http://www.sfweekly.com/Issues/2005-06-22/news/infiltrator.html

Liberals are lying sacks of shit. I respect a person trying to do something about illegal immigration rather than some college know-nothing punk trying to make excuses for it and siding with non-citizens.

Did you know that illegals can give their children a free college education in the USA? Yep. Even many american citizens can't get that.

The problem with intellectual suffrage is that you'd have 90% of the population the states in the south and midwest (red states, I think they're called) complaining that the suffrage test was biased and unfair (translation: they're just too fucking stupid). And seeing as how we could never technically get anything accomplished in our democracy right now without a majority of the people agreeing with it, This would never happen.

Kickass idea though.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whoa...another hypocritical liberal on ubersite?

The fact is, where does most of the lack of intelligence come from, a_reader? Do you want to pit some southern rednecks VS. some inner city blacks in some tests? Why do cities vote overwhelmingly democrat yet the arguement that the democrats are more intelligent is always made? I call bullshit.

This is a lousy arguement constantly made by people who obviously don't know shit.

By the way, "midwest" states include Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota and they all voted democrat.

Also, would the ACLU stand up for people's rights on this one? I doubt it. They are frauds with a communist-style agenda.

Teh Spartans were the very first Cubans.

Lets expand on your idea a little, Matthew.

Forget IQ tests for joe sixpack, how's about 7 year tertiary degrees for politicians. And joe sixpack is a byproduct/consequence of natural selection. What we need is some good old fashioned artificial selection, so my kids percentage chance of hanging out with ratbags is significantly lowered. I say we start neutering anyone from Loganholme, the Americunt Bible Belt and all Tasmanians and Kiwis....

... and Shane Warne.

rad you continue to confound me with arguments that look like you're typing in greek and using an online translator to get it in English. I don't know what the fuck you said but, since you seem to disagree with everything I think and say, I'm sure you were trying somehow to argue intelligently with me.

I r teh dum cuz i dun get it...

I have always felt this way about idiots who disagree with me.

I feel I should be the dictator of my own nation, and rule my people with an iron hand.

Not an iron fist, though. The hand needs to be open when I bitch slap them, as to disrespect the niggers.

2 huge problems with your political suffrage idea:

1. How will you convince the millions and millions of people to get off their asses to learn about this shit? You'll have millions of people pissed enough to complain, riot, petition, and rally but nobody with half a mind or fraction of motivation to educate themselves. It's easier to bitch and society as a whole takes the easy way. Consequently, you have a select few elitist people making decisions about who'll run the country. Main problem with that is that these elitists won't be your regular, everyday people. The rich, upper echelon of society will be making decisions about how to treat those without the proper education. Then it becomes an issue of actually getting those people (the ones voting) to WANT to educate those who don't vote because they aren't allowed to. Of course it's the same the way it is...thus nothing is solved except you have alot of people pissed that their right to vote has been taken away. Alot of people are content that they CAN vote and don't do it. Remove that right and see how American citizens respond. And segregating society any further in the areas of education and finances is a bad thing.

2. For the people who DO decide to be educated, who could possibly teach any kind of class like that without any sort of bias on the way the educators see government and how they think it should be run? Taking government classes with a democrat professor is different than taking it with a republican.

but you make good arguments, nonetheless, and it's an interesting point of view. here's a +1

Yes. Fuck democracy.

Actually, the US is a republic. The republic is supposed to isolate the government from the irrationality of individual opinion...

Nothing wrong with criticism....you're just wrong about the facts.

While your opinion is worthy of being heard, it's just that: an opinion. Unfortunately, the past has shown that people with this same opinion have failed. Adolf Hilter believed the same kind of thing.

I'm not calling you a fascist or even equivalent to hitler...just ill informed.

If the united states doubled the term length of all of congress people would spend less time worrying about the voters and more time trying to actually get stuff done. I'd still rather elect dictators for ten years at a time who just make all of the decisions.

Actually, the US is a republic. The republic is supposed to isolate the government from the irrationality of individual opinion, but congressmen need to pander to the masses anyway in order to get reelected. Poverty, suffering, and civil liberties help nobody. Things that involve everyday life like education funding and air/water quality are too dull.

Terrorism, abortion, homosexual marriage - these are the things that rile people enough to vote.
