when i was in Austin, i stumbled into that famous joint called "Emo's" while i messily drunk. now, i really didn't mean to. i didn't really know where i was. hell, i could barely see straight. i was just looking for a place to get another beer. i've always hate Emo, and my drunkeness had let me straight into the lion's den. when i realized what i was actually seeing, i had to go to the bathroom to puke. literally. i puked in the urinal. it was terrible. a bunch of idiots dressed in old striped shirts, cardigans all around me, stupid high water pants, 50's style non-prescription glasses, studded belts... i wanted to punch each and every last patron of this establishment right in the gut.
Emo is STUPID. it's a scam. it's a markting tool fabricated by the recording industry to target jaded teens and twenty-somethings that used to listen to grunge-rock when it was "in." i've heard the bullshit over and over again- "Emo is a LIFESTYLE!" BULLSHIT. since when is a lifestyle classified by wearing a dirty cardigan sweater and staring at the ground as if to say "i'm sad and THAT'S COOL"??? buncha fucking sheep... these are the same goth/punk transplants you'll see sitting in your neighborhood Starbucks, (as every neighborhood now has one) debating for hours on end whether the new Alkaline Trio album has more substance than early Hey Mercedes material, while they cry into their soy-chai-double-mocha-latte-chinos (with extra sprinkles)... PLEASE.
now, don't get me wrong. some of the bands i listen to (unfortunately) get firmly poked with the red-hot "Emo" branding iron that the record industry and the general listening public are constantly keeping warm on the coals. however, i whole-heartedly disagree with this tag. i love Weezer, but they were around long before this "Emo" shit started, and the poor guys are tagged with this label. i'm just glad bands like Fleetwood Mac or Dave Matthews haven't been branded yet. or James Taylor. no one emotes like that motherfucker. his music is laden with romanticism. (i can't wait to go to his concert this month, with my Venezuelan love slave's head on my shoulder all night.)
Emo is NOT a genre of music. the rationale behind sticking bands in the Emo genre is that "sadness, love and even anger are common lyrical themes" really? WOW. how concise. there are shitloads upon shitloads of songs about being sad (the blues), angry (metal), and in love (Enrique Iglasias... except not). calling all songs about those subjects "Emo" is like calling all things that are green, "grass". what a load of shit.
unfortunately, Emo proliferates in today's music market. it's a sad state of affairs, but Emo, like the candle that was grunge rock, will eventualy die. and i'll be there to piss on the ashes. (i'm still waiting for rap music to do the same, but MTV just won't let it go...)
so cheer up, Emo kid. your loosery life isn't as bad as you think. stop crying, you're getting tears on your Converse All-Stars.

I have to agree with Lambchop.Emos-basically put-Non-rebels without a cause.Some of my 14 year old son's friends(mostly girls)are always trying to hook him into Emo music.So what i do is read the lyrics with him and show just how fuckin'goofy and whiney they are.I tell him :so what you think get a shaggy haircut,dying it black,wearing a ring in your eyebrow,some huge tattoo on your fore arm or neck and decking yourself out in black,and complaining and whining all the time is going to help you look cool or be accepted.Well right now i think you're acting like a spoiled fag,now get out of my house and come back when your able to put the boots to your sister!

While I consider myself a part of the underground, I don't listen to emo. I listen to punk and like Hidden, SKA. What pisses me off to no end is when people classify entire groups of people according to some musical genre they listen too. That's not fair to any of us, and to be honest you're putting yourself on some false pedestal, thinking your above somebody else because of the music YOU listen to and the music YOU don't listen to.
So in closing, fuck emo, and fuck you.

Hey man, I just found your post about that, yeah i know 4 years ago. Hopefully you still use this email still. Anyway, I listen to Ska. Ska is the opposite of Emo. They sing about goofy things and if they sing about being sad it's only mocking emo and making fun of them. Anyway, ska started the whole trend of the shirt saying <Genre Sucks>. Emo stole EVERYTHING from ska. Including the White and Black checkered board thing, which meant Blacks and Whites come together or unity. Ska is about stoping racism and having the catchiest and funniest music, yet being serious. I can't believe these shit bag gothic fucks took all our shit. So pissed off. What sucks is Emos go OMG I LOVE SKA, I just tell them, no your a fucking poser, next time you say that I'll kick your fucking ass, infact you should just cut your wrist so I don't need to waste my energy. In the crappy, middle of nowhere English town in which I live Emo exists, but is not popular. There is a select clique of social pariahs called 'grebbers' (name adopted, we kind of liked it) and just to create diversity we've sub-categorised: Gofs, 'cool-kids' (hardcore fans) hippies, stoners, elitist pricks (who listen to the most obscure music in existance) and Emo-kids. The emo kids listen to Funeral for a Friend and other 'post hardcore' (read - Emo) bands, have phony dyed black hair with a long fringe, backpacks sitting on their arses, star tattoos up their arms and cry a lot. Emo has quickly gained recognition as a state of being, or a commonly used phrase (watching a local band, one person heard comment to another 'this band is wading through a sea of Emo') and sometimes a noun. They're not cool, in fact they're looked at with a sort of affectionate pity but I think this just feeds the angst.
I really can't tell you when this happened. It just did. Even without acceptance, they're there, like people who have BO or one eye that faces a funny direction.
I've never really considered it before.

Some people you know may fit into that description, but that doesnt mean everyone who likes that type of music is the same. Things change, genres change. except it. punk isnt the same as it was in the 70's, and it never will be. how many bands now could become as succesful as metallica or slayer, no one. cus if anyone tried, theyd get lablled rip offs. thats why music has to change. how fuckin boring would it be if it all stayed the same anyway?

Maybe I dont know because I have avoided people like this as much as I can, but I dont think that these so called "emo kids" (who god knows I hate as much as you) listen to Alkaline Trio (at least the old cds). Maybe you have had more contact with this horrible race of disgustings, but they are such pussies to tell you the truth, "crack my head open on your kitchen floor" would probably make them cry. They would rather stare at some kid who cant play guitar in some shit band like NFG and make up fake problems to be sad about. Alkaline Trio was around before this shit happened. So they do have some real fans.

I went to a club called Chain Reaction when I was in high school, and all the shitty ass emo bands (like the Angoras, and Smile) played there and all sounded the same.

I remember back in high school we had some kind of day where we just meandered around campus (the seniors anyways) and some bands that the students were in played in the boy's gym. They were emo bands. I laughed so hard at them and the one singer guy was like "Can you do better?" I said, "Probably not but I'm not going to make other people listen to me suck. You suck, get off that half-assed stage.
At that point a teacher came over and gave me a detention slip and put for the reason: Instigated an argument and harassed a group of people.
I never went to it.
Anyways, I went of subject, emo sucks. And so does punk. Dead Kennedys are one of those types, alls I know is they suck to the nth degree.

And what I hate the most is those of you who think that everyone who likes emo is trying to "conform" to the sterotype. I have a lot of friends who like this type of music, and too bad for you most of them are the smartest people I know (conservatives excluded). So when you are reading the paper in 10 years remember that these people writing it most likely liked emo, becuase it is popular in our generation, and remember that they could possibly be smarter than yourself. Jesus fucking christ. Also notice how only the "mainstream" emo singers look like the descriptions you have made. I like Emo, Do I act or look anything like these people? No. You know what, every style of music will "eventually die." Does the majority listen to classical or jazz anymore? No. Wait I know...maybe hidden is realizing he is getting old. What do old people do? The complain how newer stuff isn't as good as older stuff. Weezer, Dave Matthews...yea they are awesome, but they are old now. You have to realize that the "emo" that you hear, is the stuff they play on the radio, which, like most music, isn't the best. Listen to some songs they don't play on the radio, Alkaline Trio, Brand New and Taking Back Sunday are all good. (not all of it is about girls) Listen toonc a song e, twice and then a third time, really listening too it, and you will probably like it. The thing about this music is that you have to appreciate the lyrics, they are actually saying something, and in am almost poetic way. I like Get Up Kids too but you won't.
I have to say I like hidden's posts. The thing about him, and many other uber users, is that he is getting old. Think about the generation older than you, do they like the exact same things? Do they have the exact same values? barely. The world changes, get used to it.

i wasn't trying to sound defensive, but i guess i did come off that way. sorry. the only reason i don't like people like that is because they think they are smarter than everyone because they think they have all of us "conformists" figured out. i love Weezer, Radiohead, and At the Drive-in, too. i was really just talking about the bands that call themselves "Emo." and i just wanted to bitch about how people call "Emo" a lifestyle and how they all think they're different, when in all actuality, they're all the same. a bunch of robots.

Yes, I'm perfectly okay with bitching. I was honestly curious when I asked, no need to get defensive.
It's just, some bands that I listen to are classified under "emo." And yes, there are plenty of people at my school that dress like that but I mean, if that's what they want to do that's what they want to do. Everyone conforms in some way. Whatever floats your boat, you know?
And I mean, if they want to call some of the bands I listen to emo (ie Radiohead, At the Drive In, Modest Mouse, Weezer) I don't really give a shit because I'm not listening to it so I can feel good about the fact that I'm "different" because... lots of people listen to those bands. It's because I actually LIKE the music. I enjoy listening to it. There's no point in getting worked up because someone decided to label on of the many bands that I like.

jesus, i was just saying i think the whole concept is stupid. i don't like people who are followers. they all think they're so different, but the truth is, they are all the same. they're fucking sheep. and the music sucks. i don't see how any of these people could listen to more than one "Emo" band because they all sound the exact same to me. there is a couple Alkaline Trio songs that i like, but i don't listen to anything else by them because all the rest of their shit sounds like the same music with different lyrics. and even then, the lyrics aren't even that different. they are still about how the singer is sad because of some girl.

Jeetkuntony, if you like the foo fighters you should like SunnY Day Real Estate and HUM cosidering they were two big influences for Dave Grohl when he started righting foo stuff. He just went more poppy. Here is a hint :REAL EMO DOESN"T PLAY UP BEATS........Bl;ink 182, Good Charolette, New Found Glory, RaceCar Driver(or something like that), New Jimmy Eat world is not real emo. I can see how you're going for the 'Maddox' style editorial but the cynicism could use a bit more of an edge.

my friends can elaborate. they've seen it. when i get angry enough about something i think is really stupid, i go completely APESHIT. i know it's strange for someone to get so worked up over something so trivial, but i have an honest-to-god complex over shit like this.
one time, i saw a commercial for a computer being plugged as the "computer of tomorrow, TODAY", and it had parts in it that i had put in my computers years ago. i got so mad that i developed an ulcer right then and there. no shit. i'm really not kidding. i know that's just plain stupid, but i can't help the way i feel. (sounds like a good title for an Emo song) anyway, for several months after that, if i saw something even remotely stupid, i got a sharp, shooting pain in my gut. literally. it would shoot right to my stomach in a matter of a couple seconds.

Yeah, but emo has been around long before the mainstream destroyed it. Before it was an independent sound from independent labels. It used to be quite respectable. SDRE's bassist and drummer played with the foo fighters for the first couple of albums, then HUM had a small hit with the song "stars" and then ATDI got a little mainstream success with "one armed scissor" but the style has remained mainly underground(the real style) I just don't want to confuse people. Emo is not poppy at all, in any sense.

I call you on this one. Weezer is not emo, they are an emo derivative known as dork rock. Also, superdrag, ozma, and nerf herder fall in this catagory.
Emo has been around since the early 90's. What you hear on the radio is not real emo. Sunnyday Real Estate was one of the first emo bands(at least to gain a large amount of underground success), after them we have At the drive in, old jimmy eat world(the style changed dramatically) lugnut, the get up kids, the latch key kids, hum,Puller, Morellas Forest, are all old emo bands that were in the underground. That is real emo, not this new found glory bullshit.
Emo was really big within the punk underground and eventually the styles mixed. That is when bands like Lagwagon, No use for a Name, and the Cootees started mixing the 2 styles. Then the mainstream got it's grubby hands on it and exploited it to this bullshit that you hear on the radio.
