"We have to end this," she said, tears making their way slowly down her face. She looked into his eyes and could see that he didn't understand.

"Why?" It was all that he said, but it had so much more meaning, and so many more questions behind it.

"This isn't where you belong."

**********************

It had all started innocently enough. Brad Vissey, 23, met Katherine Douglass, 20. They began as friends, as most people do. Walking together in the city, going to the movies. There was holding hands and hugging and kisses on the cheek, but it mostly meant nothing. Occasionally, at night and in the darkness, hands would stray. Neither said a word, and both knew there was a line there they shouldn't cross. Brad's fiance would undoubtably not appreciate it.

Katherine thought she could feel what was coming, but was hesitant to mention it incase she was wrong. She didn't think she could stand the strangeness between them if she bought up something that would never be an issue. But one day he told her. He had feelings for her that he shouldn't be feeling. She tried to tell him he was just imagining it. He said he wasn't. She tried to tell him it was just a passing phase. He said it wasn't. Any excuse she tried to make, he denied. And when he finally asked her how she felt, she found that she could not deny him.

The first night they spent in each others arms was all magic and explosions. Their eyes met with an intensity that set their hearts racing. Hands moved with surety and breath rasped with longing. Clothes tumbled, bodies pressed, temperature rose, and at the end of it all, kisses lingered.

Over days, weeks and months, this scene was played out over and over again. The guilt they may have felt was by far outweighed by the passion between them. Soon, it grew to be more than that. They found themselves thinking about each other, finding excuses to be together.

One day Brad came to Katherine and told her that Josie, his finace, was pregnant. He wanted nothing more than to be with Katherine, but now, circumstances stopped him from leaving one girl to go to the next. He said he loved her, and she cried for what that meant. They kept their affair alive, and for a time they were still happy.

As Josie's pregnancy grew more obvious, Katherine's guilt also expanded. Despite what had happened, she had never wanted to hurt anyone. She found herself saying more and more often that it wasn't her fault, but she also found herself not believing it. Finally, it reached a point where the guilt outweighed whatever love was felt.

***********************

"You don't belong here Brad, don't you get it? Josie is pregnant, you're going to marry her! You can't be here as well, that's not fair to her and it's not fair to me. I can't do this anymore." Katherine turned away from him, trying to stop the tears burning her eyes. She didn't want to face him anymore. What she felt for him had grown from what it once was, and giving that up was one of the hardest things she had ever had to do. But it had to be this way. She knew that now.

"Kat," he began, "I love you..."

"And she loves you," Katherine interrupted him.

"Don't do this to me. I'll call it all off, I won't marry her. I'll do anything, just don't do this to me."

"I'm sorry Brad. It's over."

****************************

Brad walked in the door of his home, and was greeted by the smiling face of his wife. He sat down and flicked through the T.V. channels, knowing that nothing there could distract him.

Josie sat next to him on the couch, still smiling. "I just felt the baby kick," she said. She watched as Brad smiled and turned towards her, placing a hand gently on her abdomen. "I love you baby," she said, leaning forward to kiss him.

"I love you too."

She would never know that those words were not meant for her.
