You know, on the topic of qualifiers, I have always liked the idea of having an UberMadness style ladder available to uber users where they could challenge each other to post duels on a regular basis. They agree to duel, set the title themselves, and go at it. The match comes up as it would and people vote. As in any ladder, you can challenge anyone above you, and if you beat them, you take their ranking and they drop one (or swap... depends on the format).
________________________________________________________

This got me thinking. Then it got me drafting an outline. And then it got me coding.

A lot of users have expressed similar interests and Razor expressed an interest in working on it with bart (although I'm coding mine in PHP and Ubersite runs on CGI, don't know how it'll work). For now it's a standalone website with manually-approved registration.

All of the features shown in the below screenshot are fully functional, as well as a working signup form and login screen.

The reason I'm submitting this is because I'll likely be done within the next week (depending on how much free time I can get), and I need suggestions, criticism, etc.

Features:
Public vs Private voting - Specifies whether, after you've voted, you're allowed to see what others voted for. This is a concern among a lot of people during Ubermadness since you're slightly more likely to vote for something that is "supposed" to win against something that you actually thought was better.

Player Ratings - My idea for this (it's not coded yet) was to make it similar to Yahoo Games. If you win, the opponent's rating plus 400 is added to your average, and if you lose, your opponent's rating minus 400 is added. This would be entirely separate from the ladder system which could function independently of user ratings.

Submissions - The same as Ubersite, plus italics. You can't submit anything on my system, however, unless it's part of a challenge.

Titles - Currently the script pulls a random title from a pool of about 1,000 from the Titles Suggestion page for UMIII. Would it be better to have the contestants agree on a title? Or should "random title" be a customizable option like voting?

Ehibition Rounds - Don't count for ladder rankings or score, and voting is disabled.

All I can think of for now. Comments?

This is brilliant Slovin, you're like the resident UberMadScientist, aren't you??

And a clarification on the types of matchups since it's also pretty important:

Exhibition - mentioned above, the names of the competitors are matched to the post, but you don't know who wrote what (ie "Slovin vs. Allen - 'Some Random Title'"). Voting is disabled.

Cage Match - Same as the above, but with voting, and it counts on your record.

Showdown - Names are not matched to the post at all, and it counts on your record.

I plan to have as few rules as humanly possible, and they will be clearly visible on the necessary pages (ie on the submissions page you will be reminded not to reveal your identity).

looks cool. will never replace uber though.

Indeed, I'm not trying to replace it - in fact my site is completely dependent upon Ubersite. You need to have an account here to sign up there.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, and i'll get to the rest of the questions soon. Going to bed at 5AM is not good for your internal clock.

Cool idea dude. I wouldn't mind trying this but...

1- I've got nine kinds of shit going on right now, so I'd likely go down in flames, and

2- I have difficulty with rules, so I'll likely ask a shitload of questions.

3- Without some kind of OK from Bart for a link to this on Uber's front page, my ADD will have me forgetting about this...

Sign me up for an early death...

---------------
I don't think he's *trying* to replace Uber, Cinds. Just give us competitive fucks a place to air it out.

I dig this idea in a serious way, but lemme tell ya... too many rules will ruin it. Look at what they've done to UberMadness. I felt more intimidated by not breaking one of the many and precious rules than I did by actually writing the post. I like the idea of being able to challenge anyone at any time. Why should a new, good writer have to "work their way up"? Let the best be at the top regardless of when their signup date was. There are a fuckload of retard on this site who run around strutting their User number as though it makes them superiour, when all they post is shit. Let the points reflect the talent, not when they signed up.

I also think you should be able to freeze your account. I'm sorry, but if I have things that are important, I won't be bothered to log in and see who challenged me. Not even once a week. However, there should be a time-limit on how long you can freeze your account. I say no more than 2 weeks at a time. And there should be a limit to how frequently you're allowed to freeze it. Can't have people freezing it for 2 weeks every 2 weeks.

I like the idea of making the voting results visible only to people who have already voted. That way, there's no sheep mentality. Can't follow the flock if you can't see where the flock is going. I also like the thought of making the authors anonymous until after you've voted. I think it would be funny for someone to vote for a piece they really really dig, and then see that they've voted for Schlongy or Electro. It would fuck with their heads, and I find that funny.

I hope you decide to do this in conjuction with Ubersite... seems like something bart might go for. Maybe post a link or the reviews box like he does for UberMadness, and just have it up all the time for people to go to. And you'd be in charge of making it run properly, so he doesn't have to be bothered.

I approve.

good Idea, But I think it should be a set point win. If you win, you get ten points, if you lose you lose ten points. That will keep you from having everyone challenge the best and actually have to work thier way up.

And you can challenge as many times as you want but you have to accept three challenges a week. That way you can up your score if you WANT to but not have to worry about getting challenged every five minutes just because you are top seed.

Oh, this is such a fucking sweet idea. I liked all of ETS' ideas. Especially about only challenging 3-5 positions ahead of you. You can't randomly have some noob challenging the leaders everyday, they'll run ragged. And you have to earn the ability to sit amongst the leaders.

This is great sign me up or in or on or through or whatever the fuck!

I doubt this will take off, personally - too complicated. Uber is where I come to relax.

12 hours a day.

But anyway, that doesn't mean it isn't a sweet idea. I'd like to see it a bit more integrated into Ubersite itself though.

I like this idea.

Here are my suggestion. Off the top of my head.

I think you should have limits on how many times a week you can challenge, like maybe once or something, and you can't challenge someone more than 3 to five spots ahead of you.

Also, you can reserve the right to deny ONE challenge per week unless you're in the top 10, TOP TEN HAVE TO ACCEPT ALL CHALLENGES, (limit 1 per week), but if you deny a challenger, that means you can't challenge anyone else that week, and every time you deny a challenge you drop 1 spot.

There should be no (freezing your account). You should have to keep up with it. But since it'll only be once a week really, it shouldn't be too difficult.

Simply stated, if you don't take care of your ranking, you will fall.

I would want to sign up and have a rematch against rad, just so I can put up a picture of goatse and beat him like I should have done in the first place.

I still don't understand how the gremlins didn't beat my really offensive story about some dude blowing up crackheads with some acetone peroxide made to look like crack. I mean, really people. It was offensive that he got the idea from the london bombings. And the story was full of errors. ANd I was really drunk when I wrote it IN 20 MINUTES.

If you're just going to post a picture of Goatse....I dunno...

Wait until UM is over. And D-Prime Madness.

But if we limit it to a one big Fatal Four-way, we could have it this weekend if we wanted. I work, so I have nothing better to do than surf the net.

Or, I could transfer ownership of the Cup to the Duel competition. I am the keeper, afterall.

I was only using those figures as examples....all I'm saying is that you need to look at the challenging rules pretty carefully for the thing to work. If there are 10,000 users then maybe every now and then instead of creeping your way up the ladder you get to go into a challengers lottery for a shot at no.1 or something.

I don't know about 10 slots; we'll have to see how many people sign up. If there's 5000, it should be more like 50-100. If there's only like 50 people, 5 at most. Something like that. And stevie, I challenge you right off the bat for the inaugural match.

I agree with the notion that a high seed must accept a challenge every couple of days, but you should be able to 'freeze' your seeding if you're busy or on vacation. Some of us don't live on the Internet. I do, but (again) I'm a competitive asshole and I'd rather write to win a meaningless contest than work.

I think challenges should be limited to people who are maybe 10 or so places above you so you don't have unlimited retards challenging no.1 every five seconds. Also, it would make sense that a person who wins a challenge from a lower ranked contender need not accept a challenge for a day or two.

On the other side of the coin a higher ranked player would HAVE to accept a challenge every day or two rather than just camp out on their high ranking.

I LOVE the idea. But change the colours to green or something. I love the red, but the pink...I dunno.

However, due to the ADD nature of just about everyone around here, the site won't last without a lot of continued hype. But holy crap would that be awesome if it were sustained. I'm a competitive prick. Sign me up.

Random title should definitely be an option. Um, I personally like a ladder system better, because someone can go from unknown to contender in no time flat.

Also, there should maybe some penalty for refusing a challenge. I understand that sometimes people will have shit going on for a week or two, but unless you die or catch mono or something there's no reason you can't compete eventually. We don't want someone to take, say, the #1 contender slot and then refuse to face anyone. That's just ghey.

That's all for now. Purty.
