I could hear it again.
'Fuck you, fucking bastard!'
'God damn you, you fucking bitch *THWACK* I fucking told you to shut up.'
I'm in my usual spot, in my room under the covers. I've got a flashlight and my notepad. I always seem to be scribbling something.
My rooms not really a room, it's a small house and this is really a closet. I've got louvered doors with random missing slats. Sometimes I can see it happen, but mostly I just hear it.
'Stop...grl...gru...*in strained voice* stop...please...can't...breathe...'
He never takes it all the way, never chokes the life out of her. It's just a game for him; he likes the look in her eyes, helpless and frightened.
That's the only time she gives it to him, the fear, because fuck him. She's a scrapper and half the time she starts it, knowing the events that will follow. She longs for part of it, at least there's passion.
*Silence*
When the silence comes I sometimes slip down there, I have to know. I expect to find death, finality. I'm small and as long as I am silent I can go unscathed, but I'm terrified.
Once I went down, because the silence frightened me so much I couldn't take it anymore. I saw her eyes bulging as she lay, red faced and tearing; I could see the fear myself. He smelled me, fear escaping my body, each step I took coming down the stairs I got smaller. By the time I reached the bottom I was 12 inches tall and my voice sounded cartoonish.
'Leave my mommy alone!' I squeaked with instant regret.
He didn't even speak to me, he looked and I pissed my pants. As I tried to run I fell, hitting my head on the hearth of the fireplace. I slipped into the dark and awoke to 12 stitches, technically he didn't touch me.
I'm laying there this time listening, it's been months since I heard it this bad. I'm crying uncontrollably; at points the argument is barely heard over my own anguish. I'm eight years old now and something has to be done.
I'm slipping down the stairs again, quiet and armed. My nerves are practically rattling the teeth out of my head. I've come to make a change this time. There is silence this time but it's different.
I turn the corner she's on the couch, legs splayed open as he crouches between them. In the background I can hear Bob Seger in the back ground wailing out his Night Moves.
'And oh the wonder
We felt the lightning
And we waited on the thunder
Waited on the thunder'
He's got his hand on her throat and a kitchen knife under her chin. I don't think he'll kill her but I haven't got time to rationalize.
I can feel the sweat between my hand and the rubber grip. I've been playing baseball for a few years now and I've often been complimented on my swing.
I'm sneaking, hoping she doesn't look at me, surely he'll see the expression in her eyes and I'll be through.
She sees me and credit to her because she looks at me and closes her eyes rather than looking back at him that would be a dead give away.
I can't get too close...I know he'll smell me.
I bring my arms back remembering my instructions; swing level and swing thru. I'm three paces away in a trot, loaded and cocked. With tears running down my face and fear burning in my stomach I lean into it...
!THUNCK!
Her eyes dart open as tiny droplets of blood explode across her face.
This one looks to be out of the park.
She cries out and pushes his body off of her. She's frantic in light of the blood and his limp body. She's screaming at me...me!
She's asking me what I've done. She's down there on the god damned ground comforting HIM! She's trying to wake him, and I'm thinking of the repercussions of her being successful. I don't understand this line of thinking, I'm 8 years old...confusion is my ally.
Now she's slapping me...me! He's not coming around but appears to still have life, tomorrow is going to be bad for me.
She tells me to go to my room, I'm hurt, confused...I...I helped...didn't I?
I'm looking at her...
I'm looking at my bat...
I'm looking at her...
I'm wondering if an eight year old baseball player can make it alone.
