It shames me to admit this, but I own no Stones albums. Which is weird, because a while back, as I was jamming out to "Paint it Black" on illegally downloaded mp3, I realized that Jagger was the original Emo-kid.
Any suggestions for a Beginner's Stones album? I was thinking about 40 licks.
----------------
Exile On Main Street is not only the Stones' best album, it's the best rock and roll record that will ever be recorded. Beggar's Banquet is indeed another Perfect 10 album, but it's definitely no Exile. Exile On Main Street will still be talked about 150 years from now, as people continue to rediscover it. It's not unanimously considered their best album, but to those who truly love the Rolling Stones, it becomes a religion. If you're a casual listener there's a good chance you won't like some of the songs, but if you are dedicated to the roots of rock and roll, blues, soul, R&B, and old country, you are a candidate to become an Exile addict. While the remaining three of the "Big Four" Stones albums are timeless and perfect by themselves, Exile is always King. It is the ultimate culmination of songwriting, musicianship, style, and recording technique. There will probably never be another record with such brilliant production and engineering.
Don't buy 40 Licks. It ignores too much of the Stones best years, and the second disc is almost half crap. The new Stones album isn't as god-awful as their last five or six, but it's still not too impressive.
If you want to jump straight into the Stones indisputably best material, just buy the five albums from Beggars Banquet through Exile, including the live Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out. If you don't want to buy more than one album, get Hot Rocks. It doesn't have any Exile songs, but it has most of the classics up to that point.

I'm glad someone finally mentioned The Doors...although I'd pick LA Woman over The Doors album...only because I like Jims voice better on the former.

Pity our island produces nothing but bland shit like Franz Ferdinand and Doves these days. Given such a great musical history.

Mainly excellent choices, but Clapton sucks outside of Cream and Derek and the Dominoes.

In fact no, I'm sorry but what the fuck is this?
You've pasted a load of album covers and a little comment to your favourite bands? That's not a post, that's a list with pictures. It's not Thursday yet.

Pretty much any early stones album is worth it, but if you just want all their good shit without filler, go for Hot Rocks.

FUCK YEAH, dude. Almost all of those go on my list- in fact all of them except Prince, fag.
ASTRAL WEEKS? That's just awesome. Not many people appreciate or even know that album... I love the stand-up bass throughout. Truly cool.
So, I'm changing your life right now as a gift to you.
This is your ticket, buddy.

good luck man. i've already downloaded 250 bootlegs off those sites, some so perfect it will blow your mind. I have, for instance, 103 zeppelin boots, almost all 2-5 cd's. Some are ASTOUNDING- way better than studio releases.
