It wasn't luck. There's this huge anti-shark ideology because of how they did in the 91-92 season. If you look at them, they did well from having depth, a young, improving goalie, determined coaching/practise/mission strategies, and some relatively young, new stars like Marleau Cheecho and Sturm.

Just noticed the thread, hooray hockey. But seriously, Detroit winning their division and making it to the conference finals, not gonna happen. And I don't see the Sharks winning it all either, the are a good team, but the overachieved bigtime last year. Maybe if they had considered using some of the cap space to get some quality wingers or defensemen to go along with their talented youth they'd have a shot. Honestly, the West looks like one big crap shoot to me.

Usually that only happens when one (usually Western) team sweeps their way there, while the other had to fight and go to war to get there, and so one team is much less tired, and happens to be better any way. San Jose and Philly, in this situation, both had to fight to get there. There's no chance of it being a six-game series.

I have issues with Colorado at 4th.
Yes, we lost Forsberg and Foote. And yes, kariya and Selanne left.
We still have Sakic, Blake, Hejduk, Tanguay, Abby, and the youngsters J.M. Liles, Svatos etc etc
NOw, I don't think we'll win the NW, but we'll be in the playoffs.

Nice,
...but Ottawa never loses to Philly in the playoffs. Even Lalime could shut them out multiple times. Florida also has a decent shot after raping the league of all the available talent just like philly and pittsburgh. I expect a much tighter eastern conference than your prediction. Leafs won't make the playoff either. I hear that they are bring back Thomas?? Who's next... Peter ing and wendell clark?? Karma.

....
what?
Once the preseason starts, I'm going to do a bi-weekly hockey update all through the NHL season. The first half will be an objective description and summary of the events, while the second half will be like an ediotiral, which may primarily refer to one issue or be what I think the meaning of the events are. Awesome.

The thing about hockey is that more than 10% of game time is spent actually playing. It's also faster, and I enjoy how the strategy is applied better because its more constant and changes quicker. They aren't in isolated moments. How much one likes a sport is usually gauged by how much you know about it, simply enough.

Zee, for example, is extremely stupid. It is certainly Zed.
However, there should never be a lay-bower 'labour' day.

I think that Fors/Pri are going to do really well together, and that they have an offensive D. I do, however, agree that because of the intensity and density of the game, the play-offs make a good goalie more vital. Our main difference is that I think think Esche will do really well.

the bottom line is that goals win games and philly doesn't have enough scoring to compensate for their goaltending and defense. if Desjardins and Hatcher play as good as they're expected to play it might work out in their favor, but they aren't a team that will do well in the playoffs when you need to depend on your goalie.

if philly had kept leclair and recchi it'd be a different story. Pittsburg is the team to beat this year, hands down. regardless of crosby they have Lemieux, Recchi, Palffy and Leclair, a good set of defense led by Gonchar and decent goaltending.

Esche IS young. You're also forgetting about Leclair and Johonnson, among others. They do in fact have a lot of depth, and that's really the most important factor in the NHL now. That's why San Jose did so well last year, and that's why Philly did so well last year. Who are the missing since then that's going to screw them over? Forseberg is a spectacular play-maker, and he and Primeau will do great as a combination, if they're put on the same line.

Forsberg will always be a playmaker, as for goals Primeau only scored more than 30 in 4 seasons, the most recent 00-01.
Forsberg has over 30 goals in 2 seasons, most recent, 98-99
Gagne has only done it once, mind you he is young.
the rest aren't even worth mentioning.
Hatcher hasn't played a full season since 02-03 and only played 24 games in the UHL
Desjardins hasn't played a full season since 02-03 as well, and did not play during the lockout.
They're defense will not perform like they are hoping. I really don't know what you see in philadelphia.
even Esche, his longest season played his GAA was a 3.81 compared to his most recent 2.0something on only 40 games.

I think there's a good chance that there is only going to be one team over 500 in the southeast division this year. Atlanta has a good shot at being that team. You're giving too much to Tampa just because they're the cup champs. Let's see them sign St. Louis before you go making any grand decisions about them.
Nashville will do better than you're predicting as well. Vokoun will play very well this year.

As for their offense, forsberg hasn't had a good season since 02, Simon Gagne isn't too stellar either. Besides, the team has no goal scorers thats why they won't succeed. If they got a good goalie their chances would be better.

Nabokov will improve slightly (he's already awesome,) and Belfour, despite having lower stats than them, should get a nod for having one of the worst defeneses in hockey in front of him.

You think 4 Northeast division teams will make the playoffs?
I would count out Boston despite having Thornton and Raycroft, only because their team is 90% new players and I dont see them having the same core as Montreal or Toronto. And I think you have Pittsburgh to high. They've been in the news a lot lately, but realistically they have the worst defence in the NHL, and with the new open end rules to increase scoring, defence is at a higher premium than scoring. Look at the salaries for guys like Foote, Aucoin, Hatcher e tc.

Colorado lost Forsberg, but they will make the playoffs. Nashville will not, they have Kariya, a couple kids and nobody. Dallas will slip to maybe even 6-7. I'd look at both Minny and Clbs to be fringe teams possibly making 8th. As well as Anahiem, look how much they've improved.
I cant critique the west as much though, because really its to fucking hard to call. The top teams have fallen back a bit, while the bottom feeders have improved a ton, like CLB and Anahiem and Edmonton. This conference brought over a lot of talent from the East while they didnt lose as much, save for Forsberg. I think the cup will go west this year.

There is also no way that Chicago is going to finish bottom of their division.
Anyone hear about this?
"The Florida Panthers have anounced a multi-player trade with the Vancouver Cancuks. Going to the Canucks is (D) Jay Bouwmeester, (F) Kristian Huselius, and (G) Roberto Luongo in exchange for (D) Ed Jovonovski, (F) Matt Cooke, (F) Ryan Kessler, (F) Jarko Ruutu, and (G) Dan Cloutier. "
Apparently was in the Miami herald, but I can't find anything to support it.
If so, Florida is funked, and Vancouver has a really good chance to do some damage.

Nah Goose. San Jose did just as well as Philly last year. I think Marleau Cheecho Nabokov Ekman and all them are going to improve greatly, seeing as they're relatively young and all did really well last year.

Huh?
That post had absolutely nothing in it, I was on it, so I gave it a -2. What could I possibly be avenging? Did you like, give me a -2 at some point 4 months ago and you're assuming that I must be punishing you for it?
It seems thats whenever any one gets a -2 that pisses them off they assume it must be retributional. I can't even remember any particular instance of Vulva giving me a bad rating.

"-St. Louis/P-Berg/Phoenix/Nashville will not make the playoffs"
Nashville did this year and the lockout is good for them. Phoenix has improved and I think Gretzky is going to be a good coach. Pittsburg has stocked up mad, and I agree with you about St.Louis.
"-Anahiem will finish tops in their division" That's bullshit. San Jose and Dallas are much better teams.
"GO FLAMES" They'll do well.

I didn't know that future sports outcome could ever be a 'fact.'
Montreal will *not* do better than Toronto.

Numerous flaws, the main one is the fact that if Dallas and Edmonton are in the playoffs together they will ALWAYS face each other in the first round. Just an unwritten rule...
-St. Louis/P-Berg/Phoenix/Nashville will not make the playoffs
-Anahiem will finish tops in their division

Intresting. I can't wait to see how it turns out. and as much as id like to see the sens go that far, id only give them round two in the playoffs. but i hope im wrong and you are right. or even better they win the cup. oh that would be beauty.

Montreal will be higher than T-dot that is a fact you can take to the bank, and Khabibulin will alone take chicago out of the basement. San jose, I dunno , They haven't done much in this off season to impress me. I do find that division is ripe for the taking thoughm, could be anybodies.
