Subject: First live test results
Director Simmons,
You will be happy to know that our first live test with rats has been completed successfully. The rodents were injected with 20ccs each of the modified AfH5N1 serum. We will be observing them for the next 48 hours and results will be sent within 72 hours.

Charlie,
Those are very curious results and have not been recorded by any of the other test centers. Are you positive there was no deviation from the standards we developed? Please try to resolve the "problems" and proceed with normal testing. I don't need to tell you that if we keep getting results like this it could endanger the program. Therefore, lets hold off on the inquiry until we are sure these results are indeed worth mentioning.

Subject: 5th Successful test
Dr. Simmons,
I suppose that the June results were just a random fluke. The last 5 tests have proved incredibly successful with immunity levels raised by almost 300 percent in 95 percent of test subjects! I am elated with the success of the program and I, and the others, believe it is time to proceed to phase 4 of the project. I am hereby submitting a formal request to that effect. As you know, test conditions will not be prime until next summer so it is imperative to hurry approval for phase 4. See you tonight at the celebration!

Subject: Final approval of phase 5
Charlie,
It has taken a very long while, but I know you will be pleased to learn that we have finally been given the green light for the last phase of the project! It's very exciting. The new test subjects will be arriving on Monday and we can get started immediately. Please prepare the updated serum for use and good luck! If we succeed here we will be famous and wealthy, my friend.

Subject: Re: Repeated Abnormalities
Charlie,
You know that earlier in the program we experienced such abnormalities. I'm not surprised that such results have been seen twice in a short period, but we have performed hundreds of the same tests that were completely successful. Have faith in the project, friend! We are so close.

Subject: Incident report
Director Simmons,
Today at 1:30AM Dr. Charlie Wong inhaled a potentially life threatening amount of the modified AfH5N1 serum during a routine processing procedure. As we have yet to test this on humans we have no ideas as to the effects it might cause. He is currently under observation and in stable condition at the medical ward.

Charlie!
I was so happy to hear of your full recovery! You had us all a little worried, but I knew you would pull through. Do you think it's safe to say that we can begin testing on human subjects? Sorry, I know that sounds a little crass but if we lose our sense of humor what do we have? Take care of yourself and let me know when you are ready to commence your research again.

Subject: Final results
John,
The project has succeeded beyond our wildest imaginations. The modified serum is a success! The final product is being submitted to the FDA tomorrow and pending review should be available on the market within the next two years. This is my final report so I am going to remind you of some "acceptable" abnormalities we experienced which should be mentioned in the side effects of the serum.
1. 0.02% of test subjects experienced a mutation in the ALDH2 gene. This mutation made them completely intolerant to alcohol. Even minute consumption resulted in heavy vomiting and dangerously high fevers. Also, they seemed to experience greatly increased stamina, muscle growth and injury recovery.
2. 0.01% of test subjects experienced a mutation in the AJJC3 gene. This mutation resulted in a higher than average body temperature and strange, yet infrequent aerosol emissions from the skin. One of the mutated subjects looked as though he had a slight blue hue for 3 seconds.
3. 5% of the subjects possessed an immunity to the serum and were unaffected in anyway noticeable.
As all of the subjects who experienced these abnormalities have been completely healthy for a period of six months I must deem them harmless side effects. Some of them may even bolster strength and stamina which could be considered advantageous.
I will be returning to China after the mandatory debriefing period. I understand that we will not be able to meet for perhaps years but I was honored to work under you. Take care of yourself, and never lose that sense of humor.

It had been a pretty eerie drive to Elijah's residence. They had seen a car accident every kilometer and people walking around, more like stumbling, like they had no idea where they were or what they were doing. After they exited the main Tokyo area it became deathly quiet. Lem and Amelia saw absolutely no signs of life save for a stray cat here and there. When they pulled up to Elijah's house the first thing they saw was a slumped over body bleeding on the doorstep.
"Eli! Are you alright?" Lem yelled running to the door. There was a tone of panic in his voice as if he knew that Elijah wasn't there already. Amelia slowly exited the car, she felt very hungover and very tired.
"Lem, stop yelling." Her voice was exhausted. The last thing she wanted was to draw attention. If she had any more of what happened earlier that night, she was sure she was going to lose her sanity. Lem didn't even look back at her, he just kicked the body of the doorstep and tried the door.
"Mum! It's open! Let's see if Eli's here." He was starting to get hopeful, maybe that monsters hadn't gotten Eli. Maybe he had slept through the whole thing! Maybe he... Lem stopped mid-thought as looked down the barrel of large rifle. He instinctively raised his hands and moved backwards, tripping over a bottle.
"Omae, dare?" The voice was too calm. It unnerved Lem.
"Hey, I'm just here to check on Eli."
"Chidarake de koko made kuru nante... yatsura no nakama janai ka?" The man with glasses was yelling now. Lem had forgotten he had blood all over him, that goddam bitch had bitten him good. Lem saw Eli in the corner propped up against the fridge. Eli was bleeding from his shoulder and he looked like was having a seizure.
"Oh my God! Eli!" Amelia rushed past the man with the rifle over to her fallen friend. "Eli, Eli, can you hear me? Are you OK?"
The man kept his gaze and rifle on Lem. He gave him a suspicious look and then lowered his gun.
"Sumimasen deshita. You are friend of this man?"
"Yes, but it looks like he got hit pretty bad." A genuine look of sadness spread across Lem's features. He didn't want to lose Eli.
"He need to sleep. Right now, dangerous. Come inside, lock door."
The man with glasses put down the rifle and went over to Elijah. He ripped off the shoulder of Eli's shirt and cleaned and dressed the wound. He motioned for Amelia and Lem to put him to bed. Eventually Eli stopped shaking and started breathing regularly, Lem let out a sigh of relief and finally relaxed a little bit. He didn't realize how tense he was until that tension was suddenly gone.
"Looks like he's gonna be OK." Lem said to no one in particular. Amelia sighed and lay down on the floor. She was asleep in seconds. He looked up to the man with glasses who was currently cleaning his rifle with a dish towel.
"Kare wa shinanaiyo. Mo shinpai shinakute ii. Oretachi wa honto ni un ga yoi, kare wa shinjirarenai gurai ni taisetsu na mono dakara."
Lem thought that the man with glasses couldn't appreciate just how special Eli was, but he guessed he should thank him.
"Thanks for saving him." Lem offered weakly.
"Atarimae na koto yo."
Figures, Lem thought. He closed his eyes and drifted off.

I'm glad you put the translations in your reply to Thecaes. Although I did enjoy the story even when I didn't know exactly what they were saying when speaking Japanese.

yeah, I was going for more of a tired beat down Amelia. Too tired to even be scared, I guess I didn't portray it well.
Here is your translation to the japanese! All are useful phrases you can use everyday!
Omae dare? = who the hell are you?
Chidarake etc... = Covered in blood and coming here... you're one of them aren't you?
sumimasen deshita = sorry
kare wa shinanai etc... = He's not going to die, no need to worry anymore. We were lucky, he's very important.
atarimae na koto yo = it was only the natural thing to do.

I liked it. The description of the experiments was interesting. Amelia's reaction to this whole thing doesn't sit well with me...she seems too calm about it. Sleeping? I think that would be the last thing I did if I were scared out of my mind. But it's not a big deal.
What was that dude saying in Japanese?
