It is an old article form March but I just felt the need to talk about after a conversation with a friend of mine in Wisconsin when he ask why my county is the worst STD county in the nation.
Well I will tell you why and some of what I have to say is not in this article because Nebraska media is a bunch of pussies. Also this will most likely be a 3 part series as I got a lot to write about so I busted it up into three categories: Government and School faults, Family faults, and the Teens fault.
Douglas County, which contains the city of Omaha, is a county torn apart. I would say about 25% is liberal, 25% is conservative, and then about 50% is right in the fucking middle.
Therefore, when it comes time for small county affairs to be voted or decided upon the liberals and the conservatives go nuts trying to get the most of the 50% middle vote as they can.
Well the liberals want to only teach safe sex in schools. They want to completely abolish any type of knowledge about abstinence. They say that abstinence is not plausible in this day and age and teenagers will have sex so we should only teach safe sex i.e. hand out condoms to classes and show them how to use them.
The conservatives in the county only want to teach abstinence to the kids as that is the only safe fool proof way of not getting STD's and that teaching the kids about condoms and handing them out to the kids would be just like saying "Here kids go forth and have you some sex."
Neither side is willing to budge so because no agreement can come forward all Douglas county schools are very limited in what they can teach in sex ed. They can teach about STD's and what different kinds there are but they can teach anyway of fighting them one way or another.
Neither side will budge on the issue and the 50% middle folks do not know which way of teaching the kids is best. All agree that a lesson plan needs to be activated ASAP but this article was written in March and we are still no closer to reaching an agreement here in August.
The schools could implement there own learning plan but because of the sue happy culture we live in today that gets thrown right out the window.
What would I do you ask?

I would find the best of both worlds. I would teach abstinence as being the only 100% sure way of not obtaining an STD but I would also teach kids about condoms and there effectiveness but I would not hand out condoms to the class nor would I show them how to put them on, as that should be a parent's job not the schools.
In fact, the parents should handle most of what I said but in this day and age most parents now want to be the kid's best friend instead of the parent. That will be part 2 of the discussion on Monday.

It was very funny watching the gym teacher who was having baby after baby preach abstinence. We had to do reports on other methods of birth control, too.

I am in Omaha and we may not be the capitol but we are higher than 95% of American counties in all STD's minus HIV/AIDS.

i agree with you on just about all points.
side question: there was a movie, i think in the early nineties, that had a certain scene where there was a long line of teenagers at school going to get condoms from this old lady at a desk. the lady had a stack of papers about safe sex and a pile of condoms. She was stapling the condoms to the papers and handing them out (HA!). It's the only thing I can remember. Anyone know what movie that was??

In my school, we were taught that abstinence was the only 100% effective way to prevent STDs and pregnancy. We were also taught that birth control is 99% effective against contraception, and condoms are about 80-90% effective. We were shown how to properly use a condom, because misusing the condom is the number 1 way people get pregnant; they think they are safe but they aren't. They should teach the kids almost everything, but they should also emphasize that abstinence is the only for sure way to not get pregnant or contract an STD.

It is far from the STD capitol of the US, I am pretty sure that honor is held by baltimore. You are higher than a few cities on some, but far from the top, that is okay though keep it up and one day you can be a contender.
