Well, I'm back somehow. I gave out my password, someone logged in and changed it, and then I logged out. Wouldn't that pretty much keep me off of this account? Today I come to Ubersite and it welcomes me as Wiggles. Spooky! Bart won't verify my new account for some reason, so I may as well post something on this one.
Have you ever noticed that the most brilliant artists in popular culture never seems to last for even a decade? (I'm not counting geniuses like Kubrick, because he wasn't constantly working. His movies were spread out over his career, so his fuse burned much more slowly.) The two perfect examples in my mind are "The Simpsons" and The Rolling Stones.
"The Simpsons" and The Rolling Stones were each pretty good in their respective first years, but quickly rose to the level of legends. After five or six years at the top, they slid down the shitter.
Why?!?!
I was going to write a few pages on this, but I'm lazy, so I just made a little chart. Discuss.

I'm giving you this +2 on the sole condition that you stick around and fight with people to entertain me.

If the show had been great for 16 straight seasons it would be harder to define the prime of the show, but it would still be great compared to everything else on television. Wouldn't it actually seem even greater?

+2 Stones.
They were great once. Right up 'til Tattoo You. Since then, they've maybe had three good songs and maybe one good album (which was the acoustic recording of their older stuff).

So you're saying that if The Simpsons had maintained quality through 16 seasons, then none of it would be great?

It's true. Great shit never does last. It gets harder and harder to live up to ever-increasing expectations I suppose. Very interesting post.
