I've been stationed in Germany for almost 2 years now and it has really put things in perspective for me. In this country, even though I am white and, in fact, am descended from from the same bloodlines as the native folk, they know the difference. Even if I dress just like them, they know I'm an American. Their Spider-sense™ is finely tuned to detect Americans. This is not a good thing.
There's so many of us scattered throughout the world. So many of us are complete assholes and like to cause trouble. I'm not one of those people, but the Big Book Of The Way Things Work clearly states that "all people will be stereotyped and thusly discriminated against accordingly".
For example, it's hard for me to get into a lot of the clubs and bars around here. We get to the door, and we get the old "sorry, no Americans" shit thrown in our faces. All I want is a goddamn drink. Unfortunately, all that a lot of my fellow comrades in arms want is to throw someone through a window or cave their head in with a barstool.
Last night, the weather was shitty as hell. The rain was coming down in sheets. I was going to head downtown to the party where everyone was saying their farewells to one of the guys in my squad who was leaving. I waited and waited for a cab. One would come by, I'd run out to it. "Sorry, no Americans." This happened a few times and I was getting a little miffed. Almost 2 hours later, I resigned myself to the fact that we weren't going to get a cab. As I turned to walk inside, my roommate, who is black, turned to me and said one of the most profound things that anyone had ever said to me; something that pretty much sums up what it's like to be an American living here.
"Who's the nigger, now?"
"Indeed." I nodded and went inside.

Not that I don't believe that America bashing exists (I'm Canadian, we invented America bashing), but I have a hard time believing this story happened exactly as told.

All the companies I've seen so far are privately owned. I really can't blame 'em though. There's plenty of Americans here who get drunk and piss/puke/both in cabs. Fuckers.
