Now we see the cracks. The republican party sold its soul to the religious right for the election, and now they'll slowly reap what they sowed.
Fuck Pat Robertson. Your only job is to get people to acknowledge G_d. Politics is none of your concern asshole, thats why no one voted for you when you ran for president.
Just stumbled on this...
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2005-08-22-robertson-_x.htm
VIRGINIA BEACH (AP) Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.
'We have the ability to take him (Chavez) out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability,' Robertson said.
By Gene Puskar, AP
Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."
Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.
"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."
Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.
Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59% of Venezuela's total exports.
Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.
Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.
"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said.
"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

actually, in 1969, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) split from the People's Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) because the PFLP did not strongly enough embrace the principles of marxism. then, in 1971...
never mind.

Chavez is now complaining that the US is a hypocrite for allowing this kind of thing while at the same time screaming about the war on terrorism or struggle against global extremism or do as I say not as I do or whatever they are calling it today.
Sad to say, the man has a point so thanks to Pat for that one.

Pat Robertson, acting on his own, has the same rights and responsibilities as you or anyone else.
---
The problem is that people like Pat Robertson are quick to defend their rights without upholding their responsibilities, it seems.
By 'people like Pat Robertson' I mean people who are extreme and irrational in their beliefs.
Don't kid yourself, Teeph. Just because the man claims to be a beacon of moral justice does not make him a good leader, a good christian, or even a good person. You don't have to defend him just because he worships the same teachings as you do.

That guy is a nutjob. My politics usually align with the conservative, but the religious right has made me incredibly angry lately. Justice Sunday(what happened to a day of rest?) was an attack on the Constitution itself, not just the judiciary branch.
I wonder when people will realize how extreme many of our leaders(political, religious, etc.) are becoming.
Anyway, Chavez isn't that cool either. He seems like a bit of a nut, and I would like to see Venezuela in the hands of someone else.

"Pat Robertson" does not necessarily equal "the 700 Club" or whichever church he is currently alligned with.
Pat Robertson, acting on his own, has the same rights and responsibilities as you or anyone else.
Loki - Justice O'Connor didn't die, but she did retire. I think you're making some logical leaps that aren't quite supported in your "Robertson wants Justices to die" thing.

A Christian who publically calls for the death of another man cannot be taken seriously as a person of faith.
I remember seeing something on the news where this televangelist from the south was calling for a massive prayer for room to be made on the supreme court. Seeing as how that is a life long position, he was basically praying for the death of liberal judges.
Sweet.
I just wonder how people like this even have a voice. I mean, who listens to them and takes them seriously?

In a court case from 2000, tax exempt status of a church was revoked due to the use of church funds to purchase newspaper advertising to denounce the reelection campaign of Bill Clinton. The church appealed claiming that their free speech rights had been violated. The appeal was denied by a three judge panel who concluded:
"Federal tax law exempts churches and other charitable organizations from taxation provided they do not engage in certain activities, including any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office. "
------------------------------------------
Anyone know why Pat isn't getting burned by this? Is it because his adverts don't come directly out in support of Bush, and he just mentions it in his "preaching"?

Is this the same guy who has been praying for vacancies on the Supreme Court? Considering that this is a lifetime appointment, essentially he is calling on his supporters to pray for some of the justices to die.
and by "some" I mean the liberal ones
odd that really considering that the kids claim to be followers of the Prince of Peace

Not sure where you get this, yeah Pat Robertson supported Bush, but does that mean Bush is a vocal supporter of Pat's? I think he is going to have enough sencse to distance himself from Pat.
And by the way, I knew he was out there, but he has really gone off the deep end with this one.

If religious groups want to talk politics they should pay taxes
----------------------------------------------------------------
That smacks a wee bit of censorship, to me.
Politician/tax-man/cop: "You just watch what you say up there, Padre. Ya got me? I'd hate to see your lovely little Church here lose it's tax-exempt status. What will the widows and orphans do if you can't remember to shut your mouth? Think about it."
501(3)(c) does not say that you cannot engage in political activity, it says that the political activity can't be what you're primarily about. There's a difference there. Not that you care, because compliance with the law isn't your objective. Silencing someone you don't agree with is. (Or are you just THAT much of a proponent for increased taxation?)
By the way, do you feel this way about ALL 501(3)(c) non profit groups, or just the "religious" ones?
You know, groups like the Red Cross, Planned Parenthood, Amnesty International? Groups like that should be made to pay taxes if they want to talk politics too, huh?
Fucking anti-religious hypocrits, the lot of ya. And just as blinded as the blind folks you love to hate.

ANywho, this idiot is soooo wrong on so many levels.
1. What does a religious leader have anything to do with foreign policy?
2. Is he actually advocating the US violate its own laws in order to carry out his warped view on world affairs?
3. Is his organization tax-exempt? If so, why? Tax-exemption should negate your ability to advocate a political position.
