This is a response to 'chronic's http://www.ubersite.com/m/73724 It's not that I disagree, and this post isn't even aimed at him, it was more spawned by Something he said in his post, I'm pretty tired of hearing "Remember the real world? When was the last time you stopped by?" and "Ubersite just got a little too real for them".

This is real fucking life! When is everyone going to realise that? Even in light of recent events people still go "Wow this sure draws a lot of parallels with reality". Well no fucking durrr- everything we do will one day be conducted over the net. It'll be pumped in to a small bubble in our house that we live in and communicate and work by artificial reality with our boss, lover, mother, and brother. Do we really have to reach that stage before we accept that the Internet is real life?

This whole "watch yourself, this here Internet thing's getting a heck of a lot like reality" shouldn't need to be said should it? It winds me up every time I hear it. People on the net think they're invincible and that kills me too... It's like committing crime over the net and disguising your IP- it's not cheeky and clever it's just the future of crime, in the old days you nicked a CD and hid in a bush, nowadays you nick an MP3 and bury it in your non shared file, it's all the same and it really is a crime- as is stalking and all the other more serious shit that people have been doing and then chuckling about recently.

It's like the people that created the Internet did so just so you could be a naughty boy/ internet tough guy in some fake reality and then continue to be the slacker closet homosexual in the reality where your parents still tell you when to go to bed. If you piss someone off enough they CAN track you down and they CAN fuck with your life, the people getting all mad inside your computer are actually breathing the same air you are and living under the same sky. I know this because I met some of them and they were just as cool in "real life".

One of my all time biggest pet hates- People still have this impression that everyone on a computer except them is a geek; We spend most of our time on Ubersite convincing each other that we aren't paedophiles, we have got girlfriends, and we have good skin, why? Because we know that everyone's automatic assumption of you other wise is that you're a weirdo because you're on the internet, I got news for you: so are about a million billion other perfectly normal, average looking people with an average complexion and a girlfriend.

We have a confusing task ahead of us, this generation will adapt to the changes this rapidly growing technology will throw at us. We were there when computers took an hour to load a game with a cassette player that squealed and buzzed as it loaded, and we'll likely be there when the only people that leave the house are the mechanics that go fix the robots bringing in the harvests and dusting the crops. We'll have everything we need in our homes and it'll be considered life threatening and dirty to leave the house; will some of you guys still be thinking everyone you meet over the internet is a geek and that nothing you do to them could ever have a consequence on your life?

The world is getting smaller, and I like it. It's a shame that our planet will eventually be so fucked up that we can't go outside and enjoy real sunlight, but I'll be damned if I don't get excited when I take my I-pod out of my pocket, put it into it's docking station so that the music plays on my surround sound system and the video magically plays on my projector that instantly sprang to life when the remote sensor on the wall detected my presence. You might laugh but I'm pretty fucking close to that right here in the year 2005 on a pretty bloody meagre wage.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's about damn time people started to accept the Internet is no longer a place where geeks go to talk shit to each other without consequence, it is now simply an extension of the world, a way of communicating with friends, family and total strangers. It's not that unlike a pub. As it stands I'd rather go to the pub and drink with my mates, but I won't be that surprised when the technology is so good you can feel the pub atmosphere in your living room via MSN26.4 and enjoy your can of carling from the fridge at half the price of your local.

Be rotten to each other if you want, have scandals, and post pictures of each other naked, stalk the fuck out of each other and cause as much upset as you possibly can, just don't think it's clever because you're on your computer and remember to continue to be the same immature naïve coward when you leave your house.

Cheers, Paul.

Well, I think you're maybe underestimating how much we agree.

"I'm pretty tired of hearing "Remember the real world? When was the last time you stopped by?" and "Ubersite just got a little too real for them"."

I understand. So am I. But for some of the people who left, Ubersite DID just get too real for them. Should we really need it to be said that this place is full of actual people? No. Not for me and apparently not for you. Did it need to be said though? Yes, I think it did. When you consider how people have responded to this issue, essentially +2ing the guilty and -2ing the victim, it becomes extremely clear that people are not responding the way they would if this happened in what they consider their real lives. I think it was time for that misunderstanding to be pointed out.

I'm on your side. I was trying to make a point and I think I did. You spun it in a slightly different direction, but I'd say we're on exactly the same page. I think the fundamental difference is that you feel my post was stating the fucking obvious and you're angry that it even needs to be said. I felt like it hadn't been said well enough and decided to take on the task of saying it. I'm pretty sure we completely agree.

Furthermore:
http://www.ubersite.com/m/73549

I'm not suggesting that you have to wade through his post or my long series of responses unless you're really interested (Read from the bottom up, obviously.), but essentially, he is arguing that Ubersite is a fantasy world that we have all entrenched ourselves in because of some famous psychoanalyst that the poster could barely attempt to grasp. My argument is essentially that Ubersite consists of real people and that he's a dumbass. It seems relevant here.

Everything is "real" if you broaden your scope of the definition of a term. It's just not entertaining in my opinion.

Submitted by Berty (user info) at 2005-08-23 11:30:13 EDT (#)

Well...

You're both right. See, as you so rightly put it Berty is a caricature of Alex. It is a mask I wear, however if you call Berty bad names then Alex feels bad about it. However Internet Berty is radically different from Work Alex; he's more confident, he thinks a bit more before he comments, he isn't as considerate of other people's feelings, his judgement is not as sound and so on (you get the idea).

There is also the matter of consequences to consider. If I call all the people in my life cunts then I will become socially alienated. To intergrate with a new load of people will be hard. If I do that on an internet forum I can just leave and join a new forum, or even rejoin the same forum under a different name. Bare in mind I have never put a picture of myself on Ubersite, for all you know I'm some previously lost uberer, recast in a new guise.

Mass communication, however, is going to change the world. I reckon for the better. Look at the debates and massive exchange of ideas. The learning about different cultures and ideologies. C1ndy's posts that inspire massive debate: the transaction of cultural perceptions of the UK and the US. Indeed, I dare say many Americans thought that the English's reputation for having the most advanced and best sense of humour in the world was little more than an myth untill they encountered the likes of Nath, Fabit, Apollo and me.

It is a taste of what the world will become. Whilst there is a reduced social consequence to our actions the impact on all of us from our interactions are very real.

I'm going to put this same comment on Jamie's thread.

It's actually alot like a conversation I was having with my dad the other day. He asked about my boyfriend and how we met, and I told him, over the internet. And he sighed and said, "When did people stop meeting in the normal ways... like at a bar or something?" and I told him that for my generation, meeting someone online is exactly like meeting someone at a bar. He couldn't grasp it.

Dervel. E-mail me. cookielass24.at.yahoo.com. I know you'll be back to this post

Amen.

The thing about Uber that I really like is that it's less anonymous than a lot of websites/online things. I've met plenty of people in 'real life' too and they've all been brilliant. Hell, I found one uberer that goes to my uni, and I spent my new year's with another. I don't understand this need to hide behind a veil of anonymity- recent events have proved that, at best, that veil is paper-thin.

It's something to do with being in the comfort of your own home.

I have been trying to teach my mother how to use a computer lately, and I can't bring her to understand how something you do on the net could possibly be illegal.

It's "our" computer, you see. So we would obviously be allowed to do whatever we wanted on it.

That was kinda off topic, but you changed topics a few times in the post as well.

A-fucking-men. I'm seriously disturbed by the people who think there's a set of rules for conducting themselves in the "real" world that don't apply here on Uber, or on the internet in general.

Dunno where that came from. Just to clarify my opinion- It is just as stupid to send naked photos to someone you kinda sorta know on the internet as it is to send them to someone you kinda sorta know in your everyday life.

I'm not taking either side.

Our lives are in the hands of men no smarter than you or I. Many of
them incompetent boobs. I know this because I've worked alongside
them, gone bowling with them, watched them pass me over for promotions
time and again and I say this stinks.
