This is my second post in one day, but something someone said in reply to my last post kind of disturbed me and made me think: Does everyone else in the world hate America?
I spent six years in the Navy, three of them living in Japan, so I've been all over Asia, to Guam, Australia, and my wife has been around Europe. In our travels, we've never encountered anything but a generally pro-American sentiment.
That's not to say I haven't met individuals-at home and abroad-that didn't like Americans, but in general, we never felt "hated".
But there's a lot of talk about how the whole world hates Americans, and I wonder if it's true. Especially since we gave you guys David Hasselhoff AND the multi-colored terror threat level chart. But, I put the question to all of you on here, knowing that a lot of you are from Australia and England and have an outsider's perspective.
Does everyone in the world hate Americans? Give me your honest opinion, and tell me where you're from, please.

So Mr Fartsmeller... you asked the question, now what conclusions did you draw?

That you're a thirteen year old noob cunt that's stinking up the place with your fucking stupidity. Post something or shut the fuck up.

You SERIOUSLY need to grow up. I think you have insecurity issues that should be addressed a.s.a.p.

Great question.
I'm from Canada. Calgary, Alberta to be exact, the heart of Conservatism in this country.
I like Americans, I support the War on Terror, and the war against Iraq. This isn't to say that I agree with everything that your country stands for or does, but I support these things, and I have respect for Americans. I think that you guys have the best damn political system on this planet, as well as an amazing level of rights for individual citizens, and a great system for citizen initiative in your country. You also have a great system of checks and balances. Good for you!
I think that America does some crap things, but really, you do make the world a better place by getting rid of assholes like Hussein, and by trying to do positive things in the world.
Up here, a lot of people hare Americans, they hate Bush, and the war, but their arguments are normally unfounded, and they are subscribing to the majority view. This does not mean that I haven't met people who are against the War that don't have damn good arguments as well.
I'll probably be hated by a good portion of this site for this view, but here it is. I like Americans, but, sadly, I am the minority in this country. Not many up here like to show respect for your good neighbors down south.

Shut up Hairsphincter.
He's just the statistically unlikely, decent American that we all have to acknowledge exists somewhere amidst the world-raping, xenophobic bastardy that is the American public.
Let's not pretend that the vast majority of Americans don't want to suck big G.W. off until he bleeds.
Well, ok, that's not true, but they still have no-one to blame but themselves.

Oh there are lots of governments worse than Americas, but they tend to be bad basically to their own citizens exclusively. America is bad to OTHER countries citizens, AND other countries governments as well. That's where the hate comes from. Plus a lot of people have an image of the 'arrogant american' built up in their mind.

Bob - that says a lot about you - people overcome their prejudice for you. Good for you - you are the walking, talking, travelling ambassador that everyone here (well, the non-US Uberers)mentions. It's no the American people, whom I honestly adore, but the notion of the SuperPower 'AMERICA'. People like you are the real America, something which you all should be proud of.

I know it wasn't your personal list Nobb... you said so yourself.
North Korea hits the top of my list, definitely. If the USA invaded NK tonight I'd support it. Nothing the Americans do to that country could be worse than what's happening there now. It's literally 1984.
Unless the yanks decide to use nukes or the like.

I wasn't talking about my personal tastes, i'm talking about world wide the most disliked nation on average. No nation is pretty much disliked by every country in the world other than the states. Israel is hated by most arab nations, and many people dislike it in many other countries. North Korea? I never hear someone say, 'fucking North Koreans are at it again'. Americans are just...really unliked. Well not the people, just the country. I don't think you should pretend you're canadian if you travel, as long as you aren't to patriotic i don't think anyone will really mind. Just be prepared for a hard time.

Just about everyone hates your government. Lots of dumb people hate all your citizens. Smarter people have a problem with the sector of your country that is super right wing, and hate your government because of 'all the killing' and heavy handed policies enforeced by nothing but well.... guns.
But on the whole there are lots of people that don't hate everyone in your country. But while traveling I would pretend to be Canadian like everyone else does:=)

If I was making a list like Nobb, the states would probably be about 10 or so nations down there.
North Korea, China, Israel, Indonesia would probably make up the top of my list of nations I don't like. Indonesia only because I'm Australian. More of a "I don't find you morally evil like the other countries in the list, but I still consider you a potential enemy" kind of hate.

America is most certainly the most disliked country in the world.
If I had to make a list off the top of my head, it'd go something like this
USA
Israel
France maybe
Those are the only countries I know of that are disliked on a general basis. France is more on a joking basis though, people really do hate America and Israel.

Blame your government ( all of them for at least the last sixty years )

I'm American and I've travelled to many countries. My most recent trip was to South East Asia and the people I met were much like the people I've met anywhere else. They were very friendly, and they were very interested in hearing about America from an American. I was told that at least in south east asia that Americans are their favorite tourists because we tend to be more polite and respectful of their customs...not to mention we spend a lot of money on our vacations.
Honestly I think that Europeans get a bad rap when they travel, at least to Asia, because they tend to have a more serious countenance than Americans. They are not any better or worse than we are, but they tend to be perceived as less friendly...plus they wear speedos or go topless on the asian beaches which is all fine and well in their own country, but in asia it's considered extremely disrepectful. I'm not sure why they feel the need to do this, but surprisingly I wasn't bothered by the topless women everywhere.
I will say that I've never met anyone overseas that liked our President though, and they are not shy about telling you this or questioning you about him, so I suppose if you were gungho American-Blind-Pride in your country, ultra conservative with a big mouth you could get yourself into some trouble. I've had some great Bush-Bashing moments, especially in Cambodia where they all danced and chanted "Bush is a turd!! Bush is a turd!!" Hahaha, guess you had to be there. Drunken Cambodians saying the word Turd is VERY funny.

I probably shouldn't have said "hate"... I was at work. Needed to type it out quickly. Amend that to "don't like".
Indoninja, I hope you aren't implying I hop onto fashionable political ideas... I'm a slightly totalitarian national socialist for god's sake. My ideas are usually the most unpopular out there. The yanks I've met in Australia have been on average not so bad. The ones I met in Germany and Japan were terrible though.
Couple that with the Americans that never leave their nation living in the bible belt you could probably say that I don't look very favourably on Americans as a whole.
----------------------
Not at all williamson, but have to admit it is a trendy thing to do, and that does influence a lot of people.
Were the Americans you met in Germany and Japan in the Military? There is a good chance most of them were. I am sure you can understand how a bunch of enlisted guys grouped togehter in a foreign country could be loudmouths.
As far as Americans who never leave their country, it is a completely different thing for Americans then Europeans and an extent Australians.
We have virtually every type outdoor vacation you could want in the US. Couplethat with extremely expensive airfare, and that most people only get two weeks a year of vacation, travel overseas is not really high on a lot of peoples priorities. The Bible belt is also a misnomer. Yeah people there are in general more conservative, and religious, but even in the middle of the bible belt you will find democrats, and athiests. Just like in SanFrancisco you will find christian conservatives.

Indoninja is right, it's a trend. Anti-americanism (or any anti-something) is mostly caused by media. On top of that, with all the new communication means, the media is now everywhere, beaming this shit into our brains. In the long run, it does have an effect on me and as I imagine, others as well. In the words of Napoleon: "Four hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets." But I've noticed more reasonable approaches from journalists recently. Some columnists, french-canadian ones who are usually hardcore liberals, have been praising the US or at least attempted to reach out for our neighbors. The quarreling is getting tired.
I think that there is also a sense of self-loathing in anti-american sentiments. Even among americans. Many people feel desperate and bitter, especially kids, in this world of consumerism with no real values for them to rely to. A world where the media tells them they are worth shit if they aren't pretty, rich and popular. This is not a product of America but it certainly is leading the way, being #1 and all, which kinda makes them a scapegoat.
My english is not good enough yet to make well-built thoughtful arguments. Plus, I'm tired as fuck so please indulge.

I mean, England was King Pin until earlier this century, then they stepped (or got pushed) aside. Surely it's time for another change? You guys are right, it'll probably be China.

Then again I usually seem to think the same about a lot of Australians but for Americans it seems to be the norm.

------------------------------------------
How many Americans have you met?
Most Aussies I have met have been loud arrogant and fun to drink with.
Right now hating America is a "cool" for all the psuedo intellectuals out there. It is fashionable like che shirts. A lot of people think they know what it stands for, but in general there are wearing them because they think they are cool, and they are focusing on a single aspect of his life. It is cool to hate America, and a lot of people think they understand everything going on in the world, but they are focusing on small aspects of America.
I think it is funny how it is acceptable to say you hate Americans, and they are all loudmouths and ignorant, but if you try and say that about men from Saudi who think women should never show skin, then you are ignorant of their culture.

There's been a recent anti-American movement in Australian youth culture recently, which has always been VERY left wing.
Personally, i find most Americans very easy to get along with. It's only when someone either spends their time in my country complaining about how much better the US is, or is very patriotic that i have issues. Having said that, i find these traits unpleasant in everyone, not just Americans.
And how could i possibly hate Americans when all those cute girls love my accent so much.

And alragusa, the U.S didn't win the war of 1812. America attacked Upper Canada in the interest of taking land, and the attack was repelled by British soldiers and Canadian militiamen. It was more of a stalemate.

I think it was all the USA! Chanting, flag waving and making fun of other countries, the "Were the best and your country is weak" attitude I saw living in Canada 10 minutes from the border that made me start to hate America. Every Canadian living near the border can tell you a million stories of what stupid Americans say and do when they visit Canada. Of course not all yanks are over patriotic and ignorant, mostly I'd say Americans are pretty cool. I hate your government and I hate loud ignorant americans. I still think your country is very beautiful and most of your people are great. Some of them should just shut the hell up and stay in thier trailors.

Honestly, I don't really see how such a takeover would occur without a war - a big one, preceded by a long period of economic disruption, with oil as the spark that starts the ball rolling. I don't see Russia, the US or Britain rolling over for a Chinese economic and military offensive.

Liberalism is a mental disorder. I could not agree with this more!!
Of course, extremist political states never last (left or right) but you would have to agree that a national policy of "Oh, what do you think, France?" is nonsense. America's policy is "We need to do this. You know we're right so hop aboard or get out of our way." I LIKE THIS. It means that we will determine our own destiny. Not Germany.
As for dissing the UN, we passed SEVENTEEN RESOLUTIONS regarding Saddam, which he ignored. Again, aside from the FORTY NATIONS that were with us, the UN is packed with corrupt persons who use AMERICAN money for their own personal interests, like picking up whores on 42ed St. Don't believe me? Come to NYC, fucker.

lindzo41 - I never said I was "great". I am an average middle-class American who knows his history. Not to mention someone who pays taxes, some of which STILL goes to other countries in aid even though we have a huge deficit.

They are also among the main factor in the oil prices new peaks.
Now they're thinking about introducing their automobiles in our market.
They're coming, that's for sure. Usually the labor cost of countries who reach a certain level of development eventually stabilize itself with the rest of the world -- the people ask for more. But China is so populous that there will always be some guy named Ching who'll be ready to work for a bowl of rice. It'll take very long before we can be competitive again.

I won't even try to make an anology to that. But I can say if I really wanted to be an American then I would either move to America or at the very least take a different side of this debate to support America. I don't hate America, I just hate what they stand for.
As for Americans like you Fartsmell, well I admire the love you have for your country and the rational way you deal with the reputation. You seem intelligent to me and you actually know what you are talking about.....unfortunatetly half the people discussing this topic are just making random claims here and there (from BOTH sides of this debate) and much of what is said seems uh....well...stupid.
I laughed about the ubersite comment and how selective of national representation this discussion is...which led me to think about this.....
If this debate were to materialize we would have a world war. And all us commonwealth countries would be left to fight over allies from the countries who can't afford computers and have no idea how this war even started. Without THOSE countries it seems that the world would be against the United States.

No, I don't hate Americans, or America the country. I dislike certain foreign policies, certain politicians, and am irritated when I get told I am somehow "jealous" that I am not American.
There is a lot I admire about Americans: can-do attitude, ingenuity, idealism, individuality and confidence. Nothing pisses me off more than a Canuck who can only identify himself as "not-American".
I do think you guys (and by extension, Canadians) are cruising for a bruising though. China, China, China, China. THEY scare me. China is far and away more unified (homogenous) than any Western democracy, they're freaking huge, and their government is far more amoral than either of ours.

Lindzo, this is the feeling of most Americans, me being one of them:
We're very proud of our country, and very happy to be Americans. I think that we have a pretty amazing history for such a young country, and that we've done some helpful, even great things, for the world community.
I think it's sad that our foriegn policy is, at some times, shameful, but I don't think it negates the fact that we, as a country, are trying to do the right thing and help people around the world-not saying they necissarily want that help. Iraq for instance: yes, we were lied to about why we were going over there, but that doesn't mean that we're over there just to kill people. We're over there trying to do the right thing, you know?
And shit, isn't every country a little selfish? I mean, yes, being in Iraq is promotin our interests (i.e. not being bombed and having planes flown into our buildings) but I think we're also doing something that, if done CORRECTLY and with the support of the rest of the world, could be great.
Anyway, most of us know that other countries don't want to be Americans. Most other countries have older, richer cultures. But, most of us are still proud to be here and be from here.

And, if you bring up Iraq, we had 40 countries behind us, trying to overthrow a dictatorship. And in Vietnam, we were trying helping an ally avoid Communist takeover, which should be commended, but a corrupt media and weak leadership distorted both stories.

As for "our selfish interests" - let me ask, So?! Acting in your self-interest is human nature! We will do what we have to, to ensure the survival of our nation.

To the fellow who mentioned the French, that is an overplayed card. You probably do no have extensive knowledge of American history, but I can tell you that it was in the brains and hearts of the Founding Fathers where the Revolution was planned and won. The French were simply an ally (who BTW were acting in their self-interest by fighting the hated British). Unlike many other countries under tyrannical rule, America revolted and won its independence. Name any other country with such an inspirational start.
Also, I bet some Scandinavian broads are hot, but like a fellow poster said, "20 million immigrants can't be wrong", even though it's probably a lot more.

I believe the general consensus worldwide is that America IS hated. That is not to say individual Americans themselves are hated. I have liked almost all Americans I have personally met. This would explain why you have never encountered anyone who hase hated you.
However, from a general standpoint America is a very hated country based on their foreign policies alone. Politcially they seem to have an arrogance that other countries do not like. America is like the irresponsible child who is trying to tell everyone else what to play and how to play it. They want their own way, and if they don't get it they will go to war. I understand the need to protect the country from terrorism and I completely disagree with terrorism, however the American war on terrorism is not justified. So many people have died in this war and nothing has really been accomplished. (*cough* Vietnem *cough*) America expolits the purposes of the United Nations to play by their own rules. As a country I condemn it, it has terrible foreign policies and even the 'good' things they do are selfishly motivated.
As for individual Americans, I feel bad for them. I think many Americans have been brainwashed by their leaders to live and die for patriotism and religion and 'American moral'. The very three things that start wars and the reason why these wars are popularly backed by the Americans. OK, now I am just rambling.
Conclusion:
90% of American population = great, very great people
10% of American popuation = idiots who like to exploit the rest of their world for their own benefit
Sometimes you can't help but stereotype a country based on their leaders.

I'm from the US and it been my experience that most of the world (at least post Iraq War) hates America and all it stands for.
-----------------------------------
Well, er, yep, I'd agree with that.

So in all, to the America-haters - don't hate us, cause you ain't us."""
===========
In fact, most people hate americans because of raging retards such as yourself. Stop thinking everybody is jealous of your country, WE ARE NOT. I'm perfectly happy here and would never move in the US. Scandinavian countries have the highest living standard, I guess you should be jealous by your logic right? Patriotism didn't free you from the English, the French did.

I'm Canadian, I've never met, IN PERSON, and American that I didn't like, except for people from New York State. I don't mean that I've never met a good New Yorker, I have many, it's just the other states had much less jerks.
I don't agree with much of America, but it's pretty good.

I don't dislike America as a country. I have much respect for most of it, except maybe for your extreme and hateful media which can be a bit scary. I do also have the highest contempt for american tourists which from my numerous experiences, should be denied oxygen. But I'm nice to them because they bring big money.
I'm from QC, Canada

Caul, I don't think it's fair that you judge us by our tourists, man! Shit, I hate American tourists, just because I live in Florida and we get them clogging up our streets all winter. But, thanks for an honest review...

I could give a flying fuck what some asshole living in Germany or France or Guam thinks about my government or our foreign policy.
America is the greatest country in the world because we have a great economic system and a standard of living where even our poorest are still better off than 75% of the world's population.
You don't like capitalism/privatization? Fuck you - live in a socialist or communist state where most people live in squalor.
You don't like our foreign policy? Too bad - don't support people who want to blow us up. Think you're not better off with our "sweat-shops"? Look at the situation through the eyes of the workers there who make more money than they can anywhere else.
You think we're "obnoxious"? You have a right to your opinion. I have an opinion too. If you lived in the USA you would feel the same way. It's called patriotism. That's how we gained our independence from the greatest empire of that time, England, and became the world's one Superpower.
So in all, to the America-haters - don't hate us, cause you ain't us.

It's possible that people in other countries find the dicisions on the part of the American government stupid (since that was the subject of your previous post) but are not so much into stereotypes as to hate Americans for it.
Oh wait... Sounds like it's Americans that are into that. "OMG all Iraqis are TERRORISTS LOL" Turns out all of them are, even the ones living in our country. All because a handful of the people involved in 9/11 were the same color skin as them.
-------------------------------------
DUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
I'm sure you just love them all too, huh hypocrite? I'm sure when you see an Arab get on your plane or a woman with a burkah on standing in line with you in the store you have NOOOOOO negative thoughts about them.
Well, you've got the moral high ground, we all bow to you and your rightness.
And by the way, the vast majority of the people that have committed acts of terrorism in the whole wide world in the last century have had "the same color skin as them".

Here's how I see it.
On the whole it's not
that people DON'T like
Americans as a whole.
Just that some people,
who are American are
disliked around the world.
Just like some Islamic people
are not liked. It's not the
country. It's generalization.
Wow. What do you know?
Racism has finally hit home.
Oh.
And I'm Canadian.
Good question by the way.

I don't know about EVERYBODY, but I think even when you ask most others they're too polite to say they hate you. That's why you can go to a country and getting a generally polite reception (because you're spending money), then look at a poll that says 75% of that nation hates America.
------------------
You know what, that's something I didn't think about right there. You're probably right about the polite reception because we're spending money.

I don't have enough time to hate Americans, or Pohms, or Asians, or read more than one post a day from the same user.
Since I didn't really read the last one, I'm going to rate this fairly.
"AND the multi-colored terror threat level chart."
That line made me smile = +1

I live in Canada and I'm one of 7 people that actually likes Americans. The rest of the Candians are a bunch of anti-American idiots. Some of my best friends are Americans and of my closest Canadian friends from university, I'm the only guy left living in Canada (the rest moved to greener pastures down south).
That being said, I'm not a fan of the current government (more for their protectionist trade regime than foreign policy, although the foreign policy hasn't been great). So maybe the problem is that people like American citizens, but are either jealous of the country's wealth or pissed off at their foreign policy.
