In the rating of one of Fat Tony's posts, Hector_Ramirez said that abortion is a sin because murder is a sin, and abortion is murder. (http://www.ubersite.com/m/73981#1553155) I responded in Fat Tony's post, but I wanted to take a moment and examine the 10 commandments, and why it's difficult to read the Bible literally.

1. Thou shalt not worship any god before YHWH. Ok - ever heard of Jesus? Fine, fine - the trinity - a convenient dodge. For the time being, I'll ignore the fact that that damns everyone who is not Christian, because many fundamental Christians that I know aren't particularly bothered by this fact.

2. Thou shalt not make a graven image. This is an interesting one. Everyone who has been to a Christian church and NOT seen a depiction of Jesus, raise their hand. I thought so.

3. Thou shalt not take the name of YHWH in vain. This would mean that you can't curse at all, right? Wrong. The original meaning behind this commandment had to do with oaths and business transactions. Back in the day, you would swear your fealty or prove your trustworthiness by swearing to God (who among us hasn't done that?) The sin itself was turning back on your word, not actually saying Jesus Tap-dancing Christ.

4. Thou shalt not break the Sabbath. Ever takes Sunday off? You don't do any work at all, but instead worship all day? Congratulations, but you've still got the wrong day. The Jewish Sabbath (and remember, it was the Jew's who wrote the Old Testament) is on Saturday. Well done nonetheless, though.

5. Thou shalt not dishonor thy parents. A good idea in theory, but honestly, who has always honored their parents? I can remember having some rip-roaring arguments with my family, which often involved raised voices and slamming doors. I would be willing to wager that most other people did too, but only if you were ever a teenager.

6. Thou shalt not commit murder. This is a tricky one. Going back over my notes from my biblical studies class, it seems as though, in the Old Testament, God went to war ALL THE FUCKING TIME. It's not murder in the name of God, I suppose, but who are we to decide what is and is not God's will?

7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. For the most part, I actually agree with this one, sort of. I think lying about adultery is wrong. However, in an open and loving relationship, I believe an understanding can be reached about an individual's sexuality. I know a number of couples who lead full, dynamic, and for the most part, good lives, and are also swingers. Are they sinners?

8. Thou shalt not steal. Ok - fair enough. There is an age-old question that goes along with this one, though - what if you were stealing to feed your family?

9. Thou shalt not bear false witness. Also not so bad. I would like to point out, however, that God lied to Job a couple of times during the poor man's trials of faith.

10. Thou shalt not covet (a number of different things). Great, we've outlawed jealousy. It's an emotion that, while we're not proud of having, is also unavoidable.

My point here is twofold - the commandments have been tweaked and changed slightly by men over the past few hundred years - in order to get into English, the Good Book itself has been translated at least three times, from languages that have been dead for a millennium. Secondly, they are impossible to uphold. You can't not commit at least one of these, and often, breaking them was a direct order from God Himself.

The most irritating part to me, however, is people who think that they know what the correct relationship with God is, and what the Bible "really" means. It's an easily interpretable document, and who are we, as mere mortals, to lay out the one path of God? We cannot even possibly begin to understand the power and greatness of such an entity, and anyone who claims to know the absolute path to heaven and salvation is taking away from the very power of god, or elevating themselves to the level of a deity, which is, remember, a sin itself.

This is something I was wondering about. If you are supposed to worship no one but God. Why is it that Christians say you can't get to heaven, but through Jesus? And if so, then does that means everyone was screwed before Jesus came along? If they were, God is one mean bastard.

The ten commandments should be read metaphorically, not literally.

Also, according to church belief, when Jesus arrived, God established a new covenant, which nullified much of the original spirit of the ten commandments, including the "graven image" line.

I think you did raise some very good points there, but you need to remember that just wishing someone dead is as bad as actually killing them, as God see it, because the hateful thought was there. However, there are so many grey areas with all of this, that the only way to be sure you are free from sin is to be a hobbit in the woods with no human contact and not a care. But how likely is that?

Everyone sins, even the christians and jews. But God is a loving God and he will forgive us imperfect mortals if we seek his forgiveness and truly repent.

oh. before jesus' death/burial/resurrection, a blood sacrifice had to be made (unless you could be perfect and keep all of the commandments). afterwards, it was/is simply faith in Jesus that's required for salvation.

i might jump on this post again tonight, but i'll be bombed outta my mind, so don't expect intelligent conversation (as opposed to this hasty reply)

I just read another of your replies, Sass, and I have another question.

You say that the Sabbath was Saturday, and that it is the law for the Jews, and that a lot of stuff has changed since 33AD. First, shouldn't the entire Bible be taken into account? Technically, the 10 Commandments are in the Old Testament as well, and I'm ignoring some of God's laws that are set down in the OT that we completely ignore now.

So what if a lot of stuff has changed? Has the will of God also changed, and if it has, how are we supposed to be able to tell?

what i've been taught: God is all-powerful. He guided the pens of the scribes and made sure that one true translation has been kept safe. i would vote for the KJV 1611. i wouldn't trust anything with a copyright. if God wanted an inerrant version to survive, he could do it.

i wouldn't say you butchered it as much as "left key words out." missing

in retrospect, that was pretty ass-headed.

ok. every argument that can be made must be based on faith. it cannot be proved or disproved.

we could argue this forever.

i'm leaving for the browns' game (and tailgating) in about 10 mins.

good argument.

Sass-
I was paraphrasing for the most part. I don't feel that there is a good translation available in our language. My method involved mostly picking and choosing from a few different sources to create a list that sounded most familiar to me, and granted, this has it's problems. However, it raises an interesting point - how can you say I butchered it? I hate to keep falling back on this, but we use a translation of a translation or a translation. By definition we have a butchered source.

I don't see how you can say that the bible is only open to interpretation only on trivial matters. First, we'll exclude who decides what is trivial. We do - God never says that one sin is more or less important than another - we're the ones who stress some more than others.

I also don't understand how you can say its the true word.It was written by man, and man is inherantly fallible. Regardless of whether or not the Holy Spirit was working through man to make the document perfect, imperfections still arise. Lets also not forget that the Catholic church created the Bible that all modern translations are based on a looong time ago, and they did so by removing some of the books (please excuse my lapse, but I cannot remember which council did this).

And I am not judging you, but to say "any person that studies the true word will come to the same conclusions that others have come to" still seems pretty closed minded to me.

On a side note, I have absolutely no interest in most heated.

Thats an interesting question. We live in a world where it would be complete chaos if everyone took a day off. I suppose it would all depend on your faith, but it seems as though strict literalists would say that it is still a sin. Letting a cow suffer by not milking it seems kind of awful, though. I think the best you could hope for, if you believed in such a thing, is trying to take some time out of your week to recognize the acheivements of God. Anything more seems to be impossible.

wow. i was going through the commandments (you really butchered the quotes) one by one, until i saw the bottom.

you pretty much answer your own question.

the problem: no mortal man/woman can fulfill these requirements.

the solution: Jesus. more specifically faith in Jesus.

Jesus lived a perfect life. his eternal sacrifice is the only way to heaven.

true, the Bible is open to interpretation, but only on trivial matters. any person that studies the true word will come to the same conclusions that others have come to.

put a little more study into something before you go ranting about it.

ps - i'm not a faithful religious person anymore. i was taught these conservative views my entire life. i'm not closed minded to other things, it's just that your points were too easy to refute.

i'm not going to -2 this in hopes of keeping this mature.

god may have taken people but thats ok because he's God. God is infallible. abortion is Murder. Murder is a sin....it's THAT SIMPLE. I find it hurtful that you need to single me out becasue of my beliefs. Youy are a sad person but I forgive you.
________________________________________________________________

The debate between wether or not abortion is murder is still going on to this day. Some people believe it is, some believe it isn't. I don't think it is, but that's what I believe. Just need to learn to accept that people don't believe the same things sometimes.

I've always wondered this, about working on the Sabbath. I work on a farm. Cows don't stop producing milk because its happens to be the Sabbath. Now, I'm not religious, but I've still wondered if working on that day would be considered wrong. I don't know why I originally thought of that...

I singled you out only because it was your post that made me think about it. But to answer your statement - where in the bible does it say abortion is murder?

Another point of what I was trying to say, and I might not have made that clear, is that sin is unavoidable, and so I don't understand how that can be an arguement for or against anything. Working on Saturday or Sunday, depending, is a sin as well, and yet there are very few crusades against that. Is it a lesser sin, because it seems that if it made it into the big 10, its probably pretty important.
