Instead of invading foreign countries, coup de etats, and the such.. the solution is very simple.

First, regulate all the refineries to make only one type of gasoline, instead of twenty.

Second, stop letting all the tree hugging environmentalists shut down all of the refineries. In the last 25 years, the number of refineries in the U.S. has dropped from the thousands to the hundreds. Not only does revamping the shut down refineries across the U.S. allow for gas to be cheaper, (I.E. not relying on mostly refineries from New Orleans, which in turn raises a profit for delivery costs..) the local refineries would create more jobs, which would in turn help the enconomy.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I really don't know where to start except to advise you to click on a few sites about how
oil is processed. what drives market prices, different types of feed and oil stock and so
on and so on.

Ignorance is followed by ignorance.

New refineries can be built anywhere, but since Big Oil doesn't want to follow the EPA restrictions on new refineries they wont make them. They are allowed to use old refineries because of the Grandfather Clause. It all comes down to corporate American wanting to make a huge profit without updating their technology.

I'm sure you'd like a refinery in your back yard.

From tousands to hundreds?

Where are you getting YOUR figures? Crackerjack or Capn' Crunch?

Seriously... More from mid/low-three figures to low-three figures.

At even 1000 refineries, every state would have to average 20.

Think about that for a second.

Done?

K. In my LIFETIME, Colorado has had a max of 4.

And Colorado is a big fucking state.

Now there's an idea. Fuck the environmentalists and their panic-scare tactics. Reasonable actions are what we need.

do some research, htey make differnt types of gas for a reason... for example BMW engines, corvettes ,etc are made to run on 92 octane, while tauruses, malibu's etc, are made to run on 87... you really CANT get rid of the types of gas, because there are still customers who need that and cant afford a car that runs on the "Standard" you propose

==========================================================================================

Every engine in every car (aside from Diesel) can run on 92 octane. If the refineries made 92 octane, every car (aside from diesel) would be set. I was speaking in reference to the common vehicle, but anyhow, diesel, 92 octane, and jet fuel are the only three that are really needed. Besides, the other cars you were talking about run better on the 92 octane because it deposits less carbon on the spark plug tips. Do a bit more research.

Well, try investigating why refineries are being closed. Some are being shut down because the oil companies will make more money with fewer refineries. Some are being shut down because they date back to WWI and are leaching massive plumes of toxic byproducts into the drinking water of the surrounding towns. Some are shut down right now because they were located in an area where a hurricane could cause major damage.

The core of our sensitivity to this issue is that we're used to cheap gas, and we've planned our lifestyles around it. I used to work with a guy who commuted 90 miles to work - one way. If we were used to higher prices, we'd all live closer to where we work, we'd have better public transport, and we'd all drive more fuel efficient cars.

Expensive gas doesn't cause as many problems as rapidly changing gas prices do. Once we're used to a higher price, we'll all plan our lives accordingly and the "american way of life" won't be threatened.

Yes, those are some reasons why refineries were closed, but, most of the refineries, especially ones located in safe areas weren't allowed to be built back up to code (the ones dated back to WWI), and instead just shut down. Also, the solution I propose would greatly level out the gas prices, not only allowing us to plan our lives around higher priorities which need to be addressed, but also, if the refineries would make one type, instead of twenty, fuel emissions would be cleaner.

Valid points. There's probably some inherent flaw in it somewhere, but I don't see it. So.... +2 until I hear something that refutes this. I can't be bothered to do the research.

i agree in the _short_ run. -1 for lack of overall content.

speaking as a conservative, mind you, i think the time has truly come to legitimately expand research into alternative fuel methods. there will be a need fore fossil fuels for a long time to come (boats, semi's, military vehicles, etc), but if i could by a car that would run on natural gas and/or electricity or some shit and get like 150 miles to a gallon of whatever, and still have some balls to it, i'd be there...
