This is the most shallow, sheltered observation I've read in a while. Don't accuse Americans of being uninformed (like you have in past posts) about world concerns when you spout off crap like this. Your little flood didn't even make international news that I remember, this hurricane wiped most of the southern seaboard off of the map and flooded 80% of one of the largest cities in America, not to mention the largest port in America.
The looters are the poorer element of society, mostly black people, who sadly are raised with an entitlement mentality in our country. The poor black populace in our country has always thought it deserved more when it has it better here than ANY other country with a population with this large of a black populace because of past slavery and remaining pockets of racism. I'm not racist, it has nothing to do with how dark they are. It's not a skin color thing, it's a culture thing that has been taken over by corporations and is broadcast over MTV and the like everyday. (Obviously doesn't apply to all, but I dare anyone to disagree that it doesn't account for a large or at least largely vocal portion)
Cindy, you have the right to speak your mind, but you are poorly misinformed about our country and about the scope and scale of this event. You and the rest of the world that love to criticize us unfairly ought to take a hard look at themselves. Was there looting in Bahgdad? Yes. How about after the Tsunami? Yes. What about soccer rioting? Is that the fault of English people being crazed maniacs because of their culture? Stop holding our common citizenry to a higher standard just because we are the most powerful economic and political entity in the world.
I'm still curious as to how much money you guys have pledged to the recovery efforts. I mean, after all, we are the number one contributor to world aid and relief efforts hands down. We've given much more to this rock then anyone else and while I'm just as ashamed at the looting as every American is, you know that it's not just an 'American' phenomenon. This happens when people lose hope, when people have no values anymore and they have nothing to lose. Let's see what happens when you're starving and baking to death in 90 degree heat with swamp like humidity with crocodiles swimming around in the estuary that used to be your block. Would you steal food and water to survive like a vast majority of the looters? Would you steal shoes because your last shoes are soaked with water and your feet are rotting?
What will you do? Probably what 95 percent of the people are doing: waiting with uncertainty for help. If you'll take the time to notice, they play the same 3 clips of a home boy with a television in his hands over and over and over and over to make it look like widespread panic. There are very few televisions and radios being stolen, it's mainly supplies. Most of these people are scared of dying.
And to the gangs roaming around with guns and killing cops, I'm hoping for the military to fly in with helicopters and start taking them out with any force necessary. I am ashamed of looters nabbing such trivial items such as CDs, electronics, etc... Not because it's wrong, but because they're so fucking stupid that they'll weigh themselves down with useless possessions instead of stocking up on suppiles.
The world always loves a chance to take a stab at us, God forbid you hold it off for a while when we could use a little support. Don't think that if we go down, you aren't coming with it, because I hate to break it to you but you're laying bed next to us every morning. Don't shit where you eat.
It doesn't matter if they didn't heed the order, it doesn't matter that the leveys were insufficient, placing blame is about as important as how big my dick is on a cold day, what matters right now is that the city is destroyed and people need help now.
I know that England is a very posh place to live and your 18% sales tax affords you to pay the poor more than your working class, but I've just about had it with your citizens' arrogance, so in the words of a very pissed off American, blow it out your ass you elitist fucks. Let's see you run the world without us.
(I realize not all English feel this way, this is directed towards those that would rather scoff at us than do something productive)

Rawrg-- you responded to a crappy post in the heat of the moment. I just got back from 3 years spent living outside the US, and one of the things you just have to accept is that people from the rest of the world have roughly the same factual knowledge of the US as the average American has of the rest of the world... supplemented by bad information from TV.
c1ndy-- sales tax is approximately equivalent to VAT.
rad-- people in the Netherlands are seriously shitting themselves about being below sea level. They've constantly improved their drainage and dike system in response to flood disasters over the centuries, but they've started to recognize that it's not sustainable in the long term, and in fact there's a very serious proposal being considered to buy out the people living in the polders (reclaimed land) and flood it again, in order to save the rest of the country from rising sea levels. Fortunately for them they're not in hurricane territory...

I doubt those people stealing tv's are going to get very far anyway.
While others are using both hands carrying food and supplies those poeple
are lugging tv's. They will lose in the end anyway when all of the water,
food, and shoes are gone.
I am sure that there are more people looting for necessities than looting for useless things.
it's not like they can feed their families with tv's and electronics.
That's not in defense of either side.

It is really starting to hurt my head reading your responses.
Any anti US post will generally have about half, maybe a little under half of the Uber users supporting it. Most of the Uber users are American. What does that tell you? We take critisism. Half of us agree when foriegners bash us. Do you see that in any anti UK post? No, any outsider bashing the UK will get a -2 from all the UK users. How often have you even written a post about AMerica that didn't have at least one smug condescending comment about how the UK is better? Is the pride so ingrained into you that you don't see it? You are either a hippocrit or ignorant but your writing looks like it is filled with pride over the UK. Maybe not "UK, Fuck Yeah" pride but it is still there.

Also, when I made the post the scale of the disaster wasn't really obvious- it was just a stupid off the cuff comment written after seeing looters on the news in the immediate aftermath. Look, good luck with the Hurricane clean up- I have no desire to make anyone feel bad, and I don't feel strongly enough about this to argue about it all night. Every place has its faults: I live in a Particularly unpleasant corner of the UK which is why I travel so much.
Forensicgirl- I'm not surprised your family were not made welcome, in the South of England people aren't welcoming at all- I've been to far friendlier countries.

My parents love to travel and they frequently go to other countries. I've asked them to limit their travels to the US only. I'm terrified that they'll get murdered when they're oversees just because someone is pissed off with the America government and decides to slaughter a middle aged couple to demonstrate it.
They were in England earlier this year. I was even worried about them over there. They said they received a few evil eyes from a few Brits. Mostly they said they were ignored.

Cindy, sales tax is a tax placed on items bought in stores. The only things that are tax free are usually uncooked food products. Hot dogs and other items that are already cooked when sold are taxed, as are sodas, juices and alcohols. In my state, California, we have an additional type of tax tacked onto soda and juice and the like called California Redemption Value. This is on there because we have buy-back centers that buy back the containers to have them recycled, usually at about the same return rate as they charge on the item. Enough of an explanation of sales tax?

I agree with just about everything wholeheartedly... except this: We're not the strongest economy anymore. The dollar is worth half the pound. I agree that other countries should be pitching in. I'm Canadian and I donated to the Hurricane Relief Fund through the Red Cross. I don't know how much the fund is at yet, but perhaps that's something.

well written. A little angry but there are good points.
I was watching the news yesterday and the longest clip they showed was of a guy running with a tv. They showed short flashes of other people "looting but if you looked closely, one lady was carying a shit load of diapers, one was carrying cases of bottled water and another was carrying like a tent or something (I couldn't really tell). The reason it looks so bad is because the media can't sell commercial spots if they show feel good stories about people desperate to survive, they have to make a bad situation worse by making it look like everyone is a low life who steals tv's. Most people are just stealing to survive

Here is a +2 because I am polite.
Britain has pledged aid, and more importantly we will send in experts and stuff. It's not a competition though.
My post wasn't about people stealing water and food- I was shocked to see the pictures of people stealing TVS and sportswear- it's something you usually see in the third world (Tsunami/ Iraq)
I've been genuinely interested in the responses and the opinions of people on here to my post, which yes, I wrote to get a reaction, it's just for fun. I'm sorry if you were offended.
