I feel bad for the people who's lives were destroyed by hurricane katrina. Why? Because I'm an American. If you're not American, I don't blame you for not caring. I didn't give two shits about the tsunami. Indonesians did that terrorist attack a couple of years ago. Thailand is a collection of soulless pimps, whoring underage boys and spreading AIDS (after Africa, they take the cake). Here is a list of countries I care about in order of importance and I think most Americans (not necessarily on ubersite) would agree:
1.USA
2.Great Britain
3.Israel
4.Canada
Tough titties if you didn't make the list. America will only do the bare minimum for anyone else. That's just how we roll.
To the rest of the world, don't start licking your chops just yet. The midwest is always getting flooded like this and we always come out on top.
We had a gas crisis like this in the 70's and we made it through just fine. Everything will be okay.
If you're American and you care, then do something. Send money. Volunteer. Call your local country station and request "Storm in the Heartland" by Billy Ray Cyrus (haha). But do something or shut up.

I have plenty of Jewish friends, but Israel as a political entity is a piece of shit. I really don't understand the reason for the collective American boner for Israel. And i'd actually like to, but the average search result on the subject is written by neo-nazi skinheads or the KKK.

Lets see, it is the only democracy in the Middle east. They turned a worthless hunk of dessert into a profitable country. It is the only place that towel heads hate more than America.
I like the underdog. I like to see a country founded by the most persecuted people in the world, the victims of the worst war crimes ever get together and make a country. And then when attacked by jealous neighbors, to come out on top.

Here's the thing. The world is a vast web of connections, and I'm not talking about the internet here. I'm talking about ideologies, economic links, diplomatic ties, social and cultural agendas. They shift and change constantly. There's money to be made, power to be brokered and, with a little luck, advances to be enjoyed by all. Sadly burying your head in the sand isn't going to make it go away, the world is just going to keep on spinning. You are a citizen of the world, we all are, and it is best to be as informed and unbiased as possible in these turbulent times. If some group is mad at you, find out why. Examine their reasons, the causes of the malcontent, the individuals involved and their motivations.
You don't have to care, you don't have to get involved. You always have a choice, every obstacle can be overcome and in a multitude of different ways. Conflict is costly and is not always the best soloution. Life isn't a computer game where you get experience for killing card board cut out bad guys. Conflict is draining and shouldn't be seen as anything other than a last resort. If it is worth considering at all.
That's my opinion anyway.
