Part Three. Static.
I woke to the sound of static
I was cold and became aware that I was naked. I sat up but Charles was no longer there. I was in the front room on my own and the television was playing static. It was 3AM.
A steady hum was emanating from the kitchen, I walked in expecting one of the adults or Charles to be there but there was no one.
The washing machine was running and there was something thumping inside. Walking over I looked in to see my cloths and trainers turning in the drum.
This explained why I was naked but I didn't remember putting them in there. I thought back to the previous afternoon. I had got back to the house with Charles to find that the grownup's were not there, This was not at all unusual as it was the middle of the festival season and they would often leave the house for a couple of days to sell drugs, braid hair an whatever the fuck else they could do to get money.
Goats don't come for free.
Charles had been obsessed by the television. As soon as I had shown it to him he was hooked, he said that he had never seen one before and that where he was from they didn't have them. My mother had left a plate of food out for me but I wasn't hungry. I hadnt eaten since breakfast but I felt to full to eat so I put it in the fridge for later. I had gone back into the front room with Charles and that must have been when I went to sleep.
A week later and I was back at school. Other than Tony and Charles I had no other friends. Tony was dead and I hadn't seen Charles since the afternoon he had Killed Ian Jenkins so I reasoned that he was lying low, however in the absence of my friends I was effectively alone in school despite being surrounded by over a hundred other children.
I went into the school hall for morning assembly and sat near the back out of the way. From eavesdropping I could hear that the main topic of conversation concerned the death of Tony and the disappearance of Ian who I assumed therefore had still not been found.
The headmaster came up on stage. With him was the local policeman Des Reed, and another man I didn't recognise.
The Headmaster looked nervous and started to speak.
He said that the start of school was going to be put back and that our parents had been contacted and would be coming to pick us up.
He glanced at P.C Reed before stepping away from the podium.
P.C Reed began to talk.
"Children, as I'm sure you all know one of your close friends Tony Green was killed over the holidays and Ian Jenkins also went missing just last week."
He paused and seemed to look around for something that wasn't there.
"Unfortunately Ian was found yesterday and he has also been murdered."
A strange collective sigh resonated across the hall and was followed by the sound of crying from amongst Ian's friends.
I started to get angry. Nobody was going to cry for Tony. Ian was a shit and I was glad Charles had done what he did.
Charles had explained it all to me and whilst I didn't like what he had done I saw that it was necessary.
Ian was hurting me and Charles had saved me.
Like he said it was survival of the fittest.
I could smell brine in the air as P.C Reed started to speak again.
Above him in the roof of the hall one of the hatches to the attic storage are opens a crack and I thought I could just see Charles peeping out. I was sure somone would suddenly see him and shout out but no one did and the Policeman continued to speak.
He told us that they were looking for the same person in connection with both of the murders.
That was stupid. Tony's dad had killed Tony and they had already locked him away. I knew Charles had killed Ian and I certainly wasn't telling, Charles had told me not to. He said as I was with him at the time and didn't try to help that meant I was an accessory and I would be in a lot of trouble if anyone found out.
P.C Reed read out a list of ten children that they wanted to wait behind whilst everyone filed out to the car park to be collected and taken home.
I was one of the names on the list.
I sat on the floor of the assembly hall apart from the other nine children. They were all from the village and I recognised them as being a part of Ian's gang.
They stared at me and whispered as one by one we were called into the room at the back of the hall where the headmaster, the policeman and the other man had gone.
Most of the other children were accompanied by their parents as they were called into the room but no one had been able to get hold of mine so I went in with my head of year Mrs Goodall.
The head master was gone but P.C Reed was sat at a desk with the other man who I didn't recognise.
Charles was sat under the desk but no one seemed to have noticed and so I didn't say anything
The man who I didn't know introduced himself as detective inspector Ross.
He said that he wanted to ask me some questions about Tony and Ian.
I pointed out that I had already told the police what I knew about Tony and that I knew nothing about Ian and that he wasn't even a friend of mine.
I asked why they were still looking for Tony's killer when they already knew his dad had done it and that's when the detective asked me if I knew what Evidence meant.
He went on to say that they had found evidence that meant that Tony's dad wasn't guilty and that they had let him go.
He said that they needed to get more evidence to find the real killer and that was why they were asking me and my friends to help them. It took me a minuite t realise that he meant the other children and I told him that they weren't my friends.
He asked me what I meant by that but I could feel Charles tugging on my leg and so I said nothing.
Inspector Ross reached into his brief case that was on the table and handed me something.
It was like a large bubblegum and was pink although it didn't smell like bubblegum. He asked me to put it in my mouth and bite down. Charles was tugging at my leg more frantically now but I didn't want to let them know he was there and so I did as I was told.
The Detective took the bubblegum back off me and put it in a plastic bag before putting it back in the case. He said I could go and Mrs Goodall took me out to the car park. My parents were still not there and so she drove me home.
When we go to the house she asked me to wait in the car while she went to see if any of the adults were there. I told her that everyone was away at the moment and that I was able to look after myself.
She got back in the car and started asking questions about the adults, she asked If my parents often left me on my own and I was about to answer when I saw Charles in the rear view mirror. He was sat in the back seat of the car and was laughing. I hadn't heard him get in and I was sure Mrs Goodall would notice him.
She said that it wasn't right that a child of my age should be left alone and that if my parents weren't able to look after me then maby a family could be found that would. She started the car up and Charles lunged at her grabbing her around the neck and pulling her through her seatbelt and into the back of the car. I got out and ran.
Looking back I could see her legs kicking in the back window of the car and her scream just went on and on.
I ran into the house and hid my face in the cushions of the settee covering my ears with my hands to shut out the screams. After a while Charles sat down next to me and turned on the TV. He was smiling and together we turned and began to watch.
End of part three.
