http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/09/01/katrina.fema.brown/index.html

Finally, someone in an authority position is assigning blame where it belongs!

"The director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said Thursday those New Orleans residents who chose not to heed warnings to evacuate before Hurricane Katrina bear some responsibility for their fates."
"...there was a mandatory evacuation of New Orleans," he said."
"...the mayor did everything he could to get them out of there."

One thing kinda bothers me - "Sniper fire prevented Charity Hospital from evacuating its patients Thursday." What kind of fucknut shoots at a HOSPITAL??? That guy (or guys) needs to be drug through Lake New Orleans by their toes as water moccasin bait.

This is Bullshit.

Check out the FEMA evacuation plans for New Orleans in the case of an event such as this. The plans called for people using their own private vehicles and monetary resources to evacuate and get a hotel, etc.

The plans made almost no provision for those who don't have a car or the money to evacuate. That's why people were left there unable to leave.

Some people just didn't have the money or car to leave. In case you haven't noticed, 67% of the population of New Orleans lives in poverty...

With 4 days notice (yes loki I'm revising my previous claim of a week based on other info I've come across) they could have WALKED far enough away to be fine. They wouldn't have enjoyed the walk - but they could have made it.
---------------------------------
No they couldn't have. How far could you walk in four days with kids, or if you were old? And i am pretty sure the evacuation order didn't come until the day before.

They could have gone to the Supredome though. Not the best place to be, but safe.
---------------------------------

Exactly what percentage of the people who stayed because they had no other means of transportation than their feet are old, infirm, or children? That argument might hold some water for those people - what's your excuse for those who CAN walk 20 miles a day or more but chose to stay?

Now I know this is going to piss some people off, but if you're that poor the last thing you need to be doing is having kids. I know that I want kids in the future, however I will not have any until I'm well off enough to take care of them and keep them out of dangerous situations.

This is the only Katrina comment to which I have a reply.

I lived in New Orleans for several years while I attended college. And in the city, there was always a joke floating around about if a hurricane ever hit New Orleans there would be thousands dead because the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is only a two-lane bridge and people would not be able to evacuate because there were not enough ways out of the city. It's a macabre joke, but it's a macabre city.

Now, with 4 days notice, I would have been out of there with as much of my shit as I could pack into my truck and haul ass. If I still lived there, Katrina would have had to kill me from behind, because I most definitely would have been heading North.

As a former resident of New Orleans, I can tell you that everyone in the city KNEW that this hurricane was coming long before Katrina even formed. Its arrival is akin to Californians awaiting the arrival of the "big one" earthquake. They/we knew it was coming and I was prepared - when I lived there. Everyone else should have been, too.

As a human being, survival comes before material possessions. Meaning, my house would have had to be destroyed, but I would have lived to fight another day.

In all honesty, a category one hurricane would have done just as much flooding as Katrina because the city is so low. There still would have been a storm surge and flooding and death. I think the only difference would have been the amount of damage done in Mobile and Biloxi and along the rest of the coast.

The residents should have been prepared to evacuate this hurricane, whether they lived below the poverty line of not. I promise my last words will not be, "If I only was prepared to evacuate." But that's exactly what those people are saying.

I only feel sorry for the people who were physically unable to leave the city. Everybody who decided to stay gets to die as far as I'm concerned. Consider it some chlorine in on of the most stagnant areas of the gene pool.

There have been ALOT of reports of gang members shooting at rescue helicopters. I hope they die, too.
