I have noticed a few users who seem to be around just to rate posts without posting anything of their own. That isnt the problem. The problem is that it allows alot of arseholes to go around -2ing posts that do not deserve such a rating.
Now while in the real world the critique system (does that even make sense?) is like that, it seems a tad unfair to allow that to happen in a relatively enclosed environment.
Recently, one of the most prolific -2 raters turned a new leaf and posted something but only after 1,500 or more ratings. A good number of which were undeservedly negative.
While the post lacked in written content it had two good, in my humble opinion, photos. Naturally he got a or some (I forget) retaliatory -2's. Now while I dont think his post deserved that he (italic would've been good there) did. Not all people are going to turn the other cheek when you slap them.
It's just my opinion but I think you should need at least one post under your belt before you can begin rating others.
It would be naive to think this would put a complete stop to -2 spammers but surely some people would think twice before giving a bad rating to a good post knowing they have something to be rated too.

We should all be less sensitive about the odd -2 - Someone is always going to ruin a perfect +2 rating, and it all evens out in the end- the good writers like Pentameter have excellent ratings. What Bart is good at stopping is the twat that just goes round -2ing everything- the whole ratings system breaks down if people stamp all over it, and it's insulting to people who spend a long time on their posts- if you saw someone writing something in real life you wouldn't screw it up or tell them to die.
If we want the site to keep the mix it has, of adults and kids and writers, people who chat on AIM and go to ubercons, and people like me who just post and rate then you have to have a bit of order and fairness in the chaos.
I don't think the site is broken, and I don't think it needs fixing.

it sucks and i fucking hate retalitory -2s but, typically, if you don't post shit, and enough people rate it 2, the one or two fucknuts that mark -2 so they can laugh to themselves just aren't going to make a difference to the overall.
and, if you post quality, you really shouldn't give a fuck what your rating is anyway.

Please excuse this lengthy reply; I don't think a new post in response would be considered productive. I've been reading Uber for quite some time, and have not posted. I've only recently started to rate some posts (<100). Anyone who has read reviews would concur that there is certainly a lot of spamming, retaliatory ratings, and such. Comments, photos, inside jokes and even Ubercons prove that Uber has facilitated the development of a community, in the sense that those who post and rate often have developed relationships- friendly or unfriendly- online or otherwise.
I think most writers write for an audience. And while it's apparent that a segment of posts are distinctly geared toward other 'Uber alumni', it doesn't seem productive to limit the activity on the site solely to those who also happen to write; everyone has opinions and need not be writers to validate them. While it would crack down on spammers, the idea of requiring a post prior to rating would make Uber a less diverse, and much more exclusive place. From what I've read, that would seem to contradict Bart's vision of an organice site. Also, some of reviewers you're concerned about are more than happy to submit posts with no content, or posts that are deemed useless by the majority, which by your rule would still qualify them to write reviews anyway.
LiveJournal or another password-protected site would be the ideal forum for a group of individuals to gather exclusively. There, options could limit the audience and their responses. I don't think Ubersite was created to be that sort of a site. That said, I agree that the presence of spammers and idiots is unfortunate.

I surely deserved these -2's, as I have been rating some things not according to their content. And I ain't gonna bitch about anyone giving -2's to me.
But beware. Most of the time I rate I give what I believe the post deserves. And that for sure is not always a -2!
