Pytor quietly shut the door behind him and turned around, resting his back against the cold steel. His heart, beating so fast, he didn't even hear the lock click into place.
He stood there like that for a few moments. Slowly trying to catch his breath, each exhale forming a small white cloud in the cold November air.
Swallowing hard, he remembered the situation he was in and fell to his knees, plunging his hands into the freshly fallen snow - scrubbing them franticly. Trying to remove every trace of blood he could.
Standing up, he brushed loose snow of the pants of his uniform.
Behind him, a searchlight came to life.
"Who's there?"
It rang out, like a shot in the dark.
Seconds felt like hours.
"It's me..."
Pytor slowly glanced down at the name patch sewn into the breast pocket of the stolen uniform.
"...Viktor"
Silence.
"Well, what the hell are you doing down there?"
"I'm taking a piss, what does it look like?"
The night grew dark again and no apology came from the guard tower.

Three days later and over a hundred miles away, Nataliya didn't even look up from her stove when someone knocked on the door to her home.
"Who is it?"
Her husband was home.
