Only once have I engaged in illicit kissing. She was in the kitchen chopping vegetables for our picnic and I sat behind him on the futon trying to fix his levator scapulae--you know the muscle. It's the one that gets knotted up in your neck when stress starts to weigh on your shoulders; it lifts up to resist. My touch started out as a clinical procedure...palpating, finding the muscle, instructing him to breathe into the pressure. I could hear her knife smacking the cutting board. Thuck. Thunk. The muscle let go, went soft under my thumbs. Thunk, said the knife.
He offered to reciprocate and for once I didn't refuse. Usually I suspected that any offer from a friend to rub my neck would turn out to feel dissapointing, misguided. After all, I had spent months of concentrated effort studying how to work out the kinks in a body. I knew he was no more skilled than most, and I knew my rules about preventing transference, and I could hear her knife in the kitchen, could hear the vegetables sizzle... Still, I said yes. We exchanged positions and his hands felt warm on my back. Warm and strong. I could feel the shape and strength of his hands as he held my neck between his thumb and fingers, as he walked his hands down the sides of my back, wringing and kneading and squeezing. She called to us from the kitchen,
"Do you want me to pack some strawberries?"
Untrained hands grip and tug and squeeze when they give a massage. It felt so different from what I had become used to---massage therapists have to protect their finger joints, so there is no gripping or kneading with the fingers themselves. Their hands don't feel like *hands*, which is perhaps what's so liberating about it...not feeling like it's an actual person who is touching you...somehow that frees you from feeling judged or probed or invaded or undressed. I was starting to feel free in a different way under his agressive hands. My boundary lines were blurring like chalk drawings scuffing under shoes. The heat from his body was drawing closer. His breath slid past my neck when he exhaled. His hands, his heat, his breath...it was starting to turn me on.
We grew very quiet, like children do when they're misbehaving. Mothers have ears that are trained to listen for such suspicious silences; she was not yet a mother. Her knife kept thunking, her vegetables kept sizzling, and his hands began to change. Not just kneading now, but *needing*...his grip was full of desire, a hunger for something. His breath came closer and I knew he wanted to kiss me.
She never saw what happened between us, nor did she hear the meaning in our silence.
