Rebuild, rebuild, rebuild.
But why?
New Orleans is not worth rebuilding. Let me rephrase that, almost all of New Orleans should destroyed. Let us mercifully finish what Katrina started. Why do I say this. I say this for a couple of sound reasons.
(1) Why the fuck would you rebuild a city that could have the same damage done to it again in the future, possible before it is even rebuilt. The hurricane did alot of damage, but it was not the main factor. Most of New Orleans yearns to be a lake. It was founded originally on high ground where the mississippi had built up sediment about the river and the lake. Then we decided to reclaim the land, i think the dutch taught us that, damn those dutchmen and their dikes. Anyway, most of New Orleans was never filled in. Many people that want to rebuild still refuse to fill it in even now, when we have the chance. They say it would cost close 2 billion dollars. This is fucking retarded. If another hurricane comes through we would have to pay another 100B to fix the place again.
(2) What really was destroyed? I know I'm going to sound racist, but fuck it i dont give a shit. The ghetto was mostly flooded and destroyed. The majority of the houses that were destroyed were barely liveable anyway. Katrina gives us a unique opportunity to rid an area in the united states of a crime ridden ghetto. The job is half finished, i say fuck it lets blow it up. Do we give up on the people, of course not. This will probably be their only chance to start over. We can help them and maybe eliminate some of the poverty that was already there.
(3) Any idea how long it will take to rebuild. More than likely they cant even start for 9 months maybe a year. The water has to be drained, levees completely secured, Decontamination, and then the city has to dry out. Then building can start. On average you can build a house in 3 months if you haul ass. This is a long process. So how many of you users out there would wait a year to move back into a house that you could have built somewhere else and be living in 3 months. And will your job still exist. How many companies will wait a year to resume operations in New Orleans when they could just as easily move them to other cities.
Mercifully a lot of things in New Orleans did survive. The french quarter is an example. Many tourists sites survived. That is the best hope for starting new orleans over. If they can get the tourism running again they might get an influx of money that will help. But trying to rebuild almost an entire city while the whole tax base is nonexistant is fool hardy. New Orleans was in a state of decline for a long time. Our best bet is to do what we can to restore the older city that is on higher ground.
Unless they want to fill it in and try to make it higher than the area around there is no reason to rebuild a city that sits in the bottom of a bowl surrounded by water. But then again people will start saying its a matter of national pride to rebuild new orleans. Should we really take pride in trying to rebuild a ghetto?

I think New Orleans should be abandoned. How cool would that be? It'd be like this refuge of criminals and vagrants, it'd be like the Island of Manhatten in that film whith wossname 'Snake' in it. Only it'd be full of crocodiles and shit, a real badland. People could go there and hunt gangs, it'd be America's post apocolyptic playground. A testiment to the power of mother nature.

I agree 100%. Unfortunately, there are real stubborn assholes out there. They ignore common sense, talk about building up new levees that are larger and "all is well". (Although the cost of rebuilding the levees could probably go a long way to fun the building of new homes in safe areas.)
1 Billion bucks (I don't know what the new levees would cost, but I'd have to guess it would have to be at least a billion) would build 100,000 $100,000 homes. If you want to give those lowlife crackheads a $100,000 home in a safe area as opposed to wasting $1B on a levee even I'd have to agree to that. However, my personal opinion is fuck em' all for living in a stupid place where disaster was inevitable.
California will get theirs in the future, as well as small towns located near Mt. Rainer and other volcanos. Why the hell should the rest of us be forced to pay taxes to pay for the evacuation of these fuckups?
Want to know a disaster that is sure to happen in the future? The New Madrid fault line on the Mississippi river caused a devestating earthquake in the 1700's that wiped 3 cities off the map, created lakes, and made the mighty Mississippi run backwards for a brief time. Memphis is located not far from this place and if anyone has been to Memphis lately, lets just say...it is dark there, even during the day. (Want to know where blacks live? Just pick up a list of "america's 100 worst cities" released by several publications yearly.)
