The dim light faintly passes through the window, brushing up against her flesh. She glows pale, pristine. My silent examination reveals her slender body rising and falling as she struggles to find slumber. Her breath is a whisper of a whisper.
I stop gazing at her and choose to stare off into space. The last thing I said to her was sweet dreams, her reply an echo of my original statement. Well...actually, the last thing that came out of my trap was "SweetdreamsI'mRonBurgundy" (yes, one word) to which she replied, "Sweet dreams, mister Burgundy."
I think about what I've put her through today and which direction she's moved in regards to the breaking point. A step closer towards leaving me? A step further away from leaving me? It certainly wasn't the worst day we'd shared. No one walked out angry. There was no screaming. She made me breakfast like she has nearly every morning (or sometimes afternoons, depending on the previous night). Pancakes and bacon. The perfect balance between flacid and crunchy. God I love her bacon. We sat down at our computers. It wasn't more than twenty minutes before I yelled at her. I was out of line. She went cold, standing up and taking away our syrup-laden plates. Man I hate fucking up. One of these days, I'll learn to think before I speak. I suck it up and apologize. There's no question as to where the blame gets placed on this one. I tell her it won't happen again. We both know that it translates into "it won't happen for awhile," but it seems to be good enough for her.
She steps out of the shower in a towel, her hair a misplaced damp mop on the head of an angel. I inhale her deeply and wonder what kind of drug I must've given her that would last six years. Six years with me. If I had a twin, I'd have stabbed him in the face after six weeks.
I keep denying the "forever" thing. Partly because I like the day-to-day commitment, but also partly because I feel like I'm somehow taking advantage of her. She's so wonderful and I'm so...me. I'm not rich. My peener doesn't brush the ground when I walk. I wonder what she see or rather what she thinks she sees.
She rolls over towards me and her smile illuminates the dark room. I put my arm around her and smile myself, wondering what she's thinking.
In a way, she is me.
