Last Chapter - http://www.ubersite.com/m/75162
Tension. That was the only way to describe it. There had been a tension between the two of them for the last week. Ed had said very little to Andrea, and she in return and spoke volumes. About nothing, really. Just small talk. But Ed had listened. Ed had listened and learned nothing. He was quickly realizing he relied on his powers too much. He had lost the simple art of conversation. Too often he had just read a person to gain the information he needed. Now, when it was info he needed the most, he couldn't just suck it out of someone's head.
Andrea knew something was up. Ed had been more distracted than usual. Ed was always kind of spacey, but he was really out of the park this time. He wouldn't talk to her, and didn't seem interested in practicing any Chaos Magick. She became increasingly worried she had done something to upset him. Nothing came to mind, but that didn't really matter. In their world, (Hmmm, HIS world) little things counted.
They were sitting outside his dorm by the bike racks. He had been pushing the cigarette butts into a small pile with the edge of his foot, ignoring her. Andrea had spent the last few minutes trying to think of something interesting to say to start a conversation. Anything to escape the awkward silence that Ed had dragged them into. She thought about using her powers to create a situation, but decided against it. Maybe it was her abilities that had him in a weird mood. She knew it bothered him that she had excelled so rapidly. What to do, what to do?
Ed desperately thought of something to say, somehow of asking Andrea how she felt. Hell, he still wasn't sure how he felt. He was concerned about committing any feelings on the subject until he got an answer from her. He had always been good at controlling his emotions like that. It almost didn't seem fair, though. He was waiting to see if this girl liked him before he choose whether to like her back or not. Something about that felt a bit slimy.
"So have you ever..." started Ed.
"I was thinking..." began Andrea.
They blinked at each other.
"You start," said Ed quickly.
"It's not important," replied Andrea.
"EDWARD SANDS," came a voice thick with mysticism.
Ed closed his eyes and thanked various ancient gods for the interruption.
"Not so loud, I'm right here," said Ed.
"Oh, sorry about that."
The wind stopped blowing and the cars on the near by road ceased moving. All sound cut out, and the colors of the surrounding area drained, turning everything into a wash. Andrea took a deep breath and almost stopped too. Suddenly she began coughing. Ed looked at her in surprise.
"Wow, you weren't held in the time loop!"
"What the hell is..."
Before them four beings materialized from the sky, their molecules falling into place. The two on the right were dressed in seer sucker suits, complete with leather elbow patches and tweed design. On the left the two had on zoot suits, maroon and plum, respectively. One had on a fedora, the other a set of bunny ears. In between the set of pairs sat a flat, wide box etched in gold.
"Gentlemen," said Ed with a cautious smile. "Been a long time. How can I be of service?"
"Eddie, rumor around the campfire is you came downstairs the other day. Looking to take up a part time residence?" asked the guy in the fedora.
"No, Moloch, just visiting with a friend."
"You must mean Lilith. Or is it Lindsey this week?" asked seer sucker suit number one.
"You are correct, Uriel."
"And who, who, who have we here, here, here?" asked bunny ears.
"This is Andrea, my friend and a Minor Kaote. Andrea, my I present Uriel, Azeal, Moloch and Ammon. The Divine and the Infernal."
Andrea did not say anything. She more or less clutched onto Ed's jacket in mortal fear. This, she had not signed up for. She was a scientist, an anthropology major. She could not be talking to angels and demons.
"I'm surprised the mortal was able to withstand the time loop," sniffed Azeal.
"And I'm surprised you're still wearing that tie. Now what's in the box," said Ed getting angry. Andrea was not ready to face the hosts of the Above and Below. He was never really ready to face these assholes.
"We have a complication," said Uriel. "And you are in a unique position to aid us. Recently, the demon alchemists in the fifth ring of hell have developed a new plague. It will be devastating to mankind on the eastern hemisphere. One hundred million people will be wiped out in two centuries from now once it is instilled in the minds of the human creators. While we would usually be opposed to such a disaster, from the ashes, a great humanitarian leader will arise. We feel this will balance out the high death toll. But now The First of the Fallen would rather let the project slide."
"And..." asked Ed, fearing where this was going.
"And we are all in agreement that this falls under the realm of Chaos. The other seven Kaote have been asked. You are the last Avatar to give his opinion."
Ed rubbed his temples. Of course the High would come to him when they were meddling in the affairs of the lower beings. They loved this shit. It made them feel superior. How was he to make a descion like this?
"Life is Magick, Magick is Change, Change is Chaos," he muttered.
The four higher creatures awaited his answer.
"We must evolve at all costs. There is always a chance at a better tomorrow," sighed Ed.
"Ed..." whispered Andrea.
"Release the plague," said Ed.
"I can not believe you. I can not believe you said that," whispered Andrea.
"We have a complication," said Uriel.
"What do you mean? I just told you..."
"Yes, but with your vote, that makes it a split descion. Four votes for, four against. I believe it was quite fortunate that we found ourselves in the presence of the young woman here."
"I get a say in this?"
"The final say, it would seem," said Moloch.
"Fuck this! Don't release shit."
"So be it. Thank you for your time Kaotes," said Azeal.
And with that, they dissolved from the material world, along with the box.
Andrea and Ed sat there in silence for a few minutes. Ed knew something had been broken between them. A certain trust. He waited for her to start screaming, to hear her accusations, her challenges, her denouncements. He would take all of it. He just needed to explain why he would vote to...
"I think I'm going to go," said Andrea.
"Andrea, wait!"
"No, I think I'm going to go. I don't want to see you for a while Ed."
Ed sat outside by the bike rack until the sun went down.

Thank you ever so much for the, you know, plot advancements.
I would put a smiley face or something here, but I don't feel like doing it. So instead you get this little blurb. Don't you feel special.
