With regular heroin use, tolerance develops. This means the abuser must use more heroin to achieve the same intensity or effect. As higher doses are used over time, physical dependence and addiction develop. With physical dependence, the body has adapted to the presence of the drug and withdrawal symptoms may occur if use is reduced or stopped.

One time, when I was young, I went camping with my family. On one particular evening during that trip, I found myself sitting placidly by the campfire when suddenly my father rushed quickly up the path from the lake to find me. He told me to be very quiet and to follow him. I obeyed dutifully and we both crept down the path to the lake, quiet as an owl flies.
Upon reaching the shore, my father motioned for me to stop and then pointed his flannel-clad arm toward the water's edge, indicating I should look in that direction.
There, in the shallows which where glittering like a million tiny diamonds in the fitful light of the setting sun, was a great blue herion, hunting for its evening meal.
Truly, it was a majestic bird. And I remembered feeling awed by the furious beauty of nature, and of feeling one with the circle of all life on the planet.
This post took me right back to that wonderful time. Thank you.
