Sometimes I really lose faith in the music industry. I was at Best Buy the other day checking out Metallica CDs, and this balding guy, must have been 35 years old, walked up behind me and said "Heh, Metallica, eh? I'm a die-hard Metallica fan as well."
At this point, I was thinking something along the lines of "Hey, cool. He likes the same band as me. He seems like a cool guy."
Fuck, was I wrong.
He proceeded to tell me that he "Owns over 100 Metallica CDs, including the Japanese imports and singles", gets 'virtual surround sound' with his new stereo, and then went off about how lame I am for not having heard the single they played at a tiny bar in Des Moines in front of 14 people in '82. What the fuck?
I didn't even know Metallica had TEN CDs, and I sure as hell never listened to any of their singles. Look. Music is for ENJOYMENT. It's there so you can LISTEN to it. It's not a fucking contest. There's no race. Nobody will feel bad if you don't own every single piece of material Metallica ever released and hoard them away in secret sterilized air pockets deep within the earth. I listen to Metallica because they're a great band, not because I think that owning everything they produced makes me the second fucking coming of Christ.
And don't even get me started on how "but lol dante mettalica sued napster so they suck lol rofl!!!1". Oh, yeah; God forbid you should be able to STEAL music, dipshit.

I collect Sega stuff... what the fucks the problem with collecting? Now the pompous attitude of the guy is really dumb, but nothing is wrong with collecting. I have many hours of pleasure playing my Sega CD!

I don't understand how your opening sentence was at all related to the rest of your rant- you didn't discuss the music industry at all.
Metallica gained their audience through bootlegs.
Downloading music is like a modern form of trading the bootleg or dubbing a tape for your friend, and the ability to listen to music before buying it is both fair and advantageous to the record industry. I've bought (yes, most people who download CDs DO buy them too!) a bunch of CDs this year from artists I wouldn't have been exposed to had I not downloaded them first. And many of the CDs people download are ones they would never buy when they DID buy music, so using those numbers to calculate lost sales is inaccurate.
I saw Metallica 10 times in high school & college. Master of Puppets is one of the best albums of all time, and this is coming from a woman. I spent my crap job, hard earned money to see them wherever I could in the tri-state area. I was one of those kids buying anything Metallica related I could get my hands on. They are a different band now, and I do not enjoy music they've written since 1991. But even if I did, I'd still call them hypocrites for changing their minds about sharing music when they no longer 'needed' to do so.
Hypocrites.

Am I the only one who has wondered what would have become of Metallica if Dave Mustaine stayed in the band and had never formed Megadeth? Of course, without Megadeth there would be no "Killing is my business... and business is good."

But, of course, there is the fact that if music continues to be stolen, it's likely that there will be no more music soon. And if it's YOUR favorite band, what then?
I respect that you don't like Metallica, but still; Metallica wasn't even the point of this post.

While this isn't neccesarily the type of thing I come to uber for, I found it strangely satisfying. Good rant. Good rant.
