Vasquez had never done much running during his time as a mortal. He never found the need. He found he didn't like it very much.
The monstrous baby-like creatures glided in and out of the sparse trees, crying in high pitched wails. Their bat wings flapping furiously for moments to carry them aloft, then still to send them sailing. Their adult sized genitals had become erect with the thrill of the hunt.
Wendollyn and Vasquez skipped over underbrush, raced around rocks. The flying predators stayed in quick pursuit. The shrill cries grew more menacing.
Wendollyn turned and dove into a roll. She came up with her arm aimed at one of the closet Bitter Born and fired. Three rapid sounds escaped her fist and the beast fell from the sky. She quickly fired her weapon at another and repeated her shot. It, too, fell.
Vasquez looked around for a weapon of some kind. He found a large stick and picked it up. Better than nothing. When the first swooped in at him, he swung it, but missed. The tree branch was thick, but long and awkward to wield. He kept swinging it around him, trying to keep the things at bay. They gurgled with what could only be a form of laughter and took turns driving at him. He managed to knock one across the side of the head, but it was back up in the air again after a few moments.
His companion was having slightly better luck. Wary of the strange semi-organic weapon she wore on her fist, the demonic children didn't dare get as close to her as they did Vasquez. She had dropped four of them, now taking aim at a fifth.
"Go for their mouths!" screamed Wendollyn. "That's where they're most vulnerable!"
Vasquez took what she said as little help. He was having a difficult time just touching them, let alone any specific place. Regardless, when the next one came in, he planted his feet and shoved the branch into its gaping maw. The stick took hold, piercing the back of the Bitter Born's throat. Choking, it fell backwards, breaking off the top of the stick.
His weapon was half the size now, only arm's length, the rest stuck in the dying monster. As he stood ready for the next round of attacks, his mind drifted suddenly.
He remembered being in a position like this, eons ago.
He remembered standing before a horde of Nether Cherubim.
He remembered holding a flaming sword of God.
He remembered being a soldier of the Heavenly Host.
He remembered what Divinity felt like.
Vasquez began fighting. Every hit, every strike fell home. Dodge, thrust, release. Another down. Turn, slide, slice. Two more down. Jumping, he he swung an arc around himself, down. Thrust, release. Another down. The screams of glee became those of terror. Strike, dodge, spin. Three more. Up, follow through, return. Another. Black ichor spilling in rain drops from above and shooting up from below. It's their blood. Flip the weapon, it is an extension of your will. Slice, block, stab.
The few remaining creatures fled, most of them wounded. Vasquez stood there shaking, righteous anger flooding his system. How could he have forgotten the battles? How could have he forgotten the War of The Rebel Angels? He had fought along side brothers against brothers and drawn blood well. Had mortality taken such a toll on him that...
"Vasquez?"
He looked over at Wendollyn. She stood a few paces away from him, her eyes wide. She had her weapon trained on him, but her arm was trembling.
"How did you... what did you do to your stick?"
Vasquez looked at what was once a tree branch in his hand. Instead of a piece of wood, it had been burnt away, and in its place he gripped a flaming sword. Unlike the gold one that he had carried in Heaven, this one was as darkly purple as the alien sun that hover in the sky here in the Par-Uhmbra.
Without thinking he opened his hand and the sword dissipated, vanished. He stood there in disbelief. He had called down an Angelic weapon. But it was as changed as he was. He tried to summon it again with no results. He looked up at Wendollyn, his eyes as wide as her's, fear to match.
"What am I?" Vasquez asked.
