Last Chapter - http://www.ubersite.com/m/76255
Ed sat in bed with books and papers strewed all about him. Research. He had tracked down all of his sources and made them cough up every little bit of information they had on the Uhmbra. His questions about the the Realm of the Mythic's dark counterpoint had only gotten him strange looks. It was true, most people had no idea that such a reality existed. But if there was a possibility that Vasquez was there, that's where they would travel to. Ed thought about it idly. This mission had become vitally important to him. It wasn't just his friend he was worried about anymore, it was the fate of those souls who didn't quite fit in with the Archguard plan. If Vasquez could end up somewhere else, who's to say a rogue like a Chaos Avatar wouldn't get tossed somewhere else either.
He was proud of Grace. She had kept her cool through out the entire affair so far. Not usually one for being on the calm and rational side, she had taken things very seriously when it hit home that Vasquez was lost to the Trinity of Worlds. At first he had been a little apprehensive about her attitude, worried that old flames were lighting up. But they had talked, and her explanation had set him straight.
As the Princess of Hell, and one day ruler of the Infernal Plane, it was an abomination to her that souls were getting "misplaced." Beings of the Archguard belonged here, and should not be allowed to get set into exile. This could destroy the status quo. Even if this meant that Vasquez had to spend eternity in Hell, he belonged there over the Uhmbra or this so-called Par-Uhmbra.
The biggest concern that Ed had was whether they would have access to their abilities in these other worlds. Here, the information he had gathered differed greatly. Some mages and mystics spoke as if their powers had been cut off when entering the Uhmbra. Others said they had felt like gods, so filled with unnatural amounts of energies. Ed felt relatively confident that since Chaos was a universal constant, a building block in all forms of existence, that he would be unaffected. But Grace was anchored in her power base to the Archguard. Only her Divine status would be a factor. And he couldn't find any records of anyone even as remotely high in the hierarchy ever going to the Uhmbra before.
"Are you still out there worrying over all those books?" called Grace from the bathroom.
"Maybe," called back Ed absently.
"Baby, everything will be fine. We'll meet Nuncio tomorrow and he'll take us directly to to see Lucinda. We'll spend a few days, a few weeks if we have to, looking around the Uhmbra for Vasquez. If he's not there, we'll have Nuncio take us to the Par. Either way, we'll rescue him."
"You know, I've been thinking about something, " said Ed.
"What?" said Grace, still in the bathroom.
"What if Vasquez doesn't need saving? What if he's happy where ever he is? What do we do then?"
Silence from the bathroom for a minute.
"Grace?" called out Ed.
"I heard you. I don't know Ed. What if he is happy? He doesn't belong there. Could he be happy? I don't know. I guess we'll worry about that when the time comes."
"Hmmm..." sighed Ed.
"What?" asked Grace.
"Why are we having a conversation between two different rooms?" yelled out Ed playfully.
Grace stepped out of the bathroom holding her toothbrush and cocked her hips to the side of the door frame. She had on tiny white cotton panties and a white tank top that barely covered her torso. Her short black hair was brushed back out of her face and pinned to stay that way for the night. As Ed gawked at the image of his girlfriend, the scent of her vanilla body lotion reached his nose.
"You need to come here right now," said Ed.
"One second," smiled Grace, disappearing back into the bathroom.
Ed spun his hands around in circles, the layers of books and scrolls flying through the air and landing in a small pile over by the window, completely organized. Sometimes cleaning was merely removing the Chaos from an event or a situation.
Grace came back out of the bathroom and glided across the bedroom to the bed. She slid under the covers and nestled up next to Ed. They kissed once, twice. He ran a finger down her jawline and she took his hand, kissing the back of it.
"Are you sure about all of this, Ed?" asked Grace as she kissed his neck.
"What? Making love to you or searching for Vasquez?"
"Shut up," she laughed.
"I think we're doing the right thing. Not only for our friend, but for the entire Archguard. Who knows why something like this happened? Has it happened before, will it again? These are things that you as the future queen of Hell need to know."
" I couldn't do any of this without you, baby. Thank you for helping me out on this one," said Grace looking right at him.
"Of course," said Ed, a little confused.
"I mean, I'm so used to doing everything on my own, relying on no one. It's nice to have a partner. It's nice to have you beside me."
"I love you Grace," said Ed.
"I love you, too! I love you so much."
Ed kissed her deeply and reached around to embrace her small frame. Grace ran her hands up across his chest. Her fingers came up to to clasp his face, she kissed his lips and his chin. Ed moved his hands up underneath the thin fabric of her tank top, caressing her back. His finger tips slid across her skin as she pulled the white tank from her her body. He tugged on her underwear until it, too, came off.
Ed sat up in bed and Grace climbed up on his lap. She leaned back and allowed him to kiss her neck, his tongue running down to her chest. He bite at her nipples causing her to moan and she shifted harder against his groin. Ed reached down to position himself into her. Grace lifted up slightly to let him, licking his ear and...
"Edward! Ed! Grace! Where are you!"
"What the fuck!" swore Grace getting off her boyfriend and wrapping the sheets around herself.
Ed had just pulled on a set of boxers when Maximillian burst into the room.
"Max, what the hell is going on? Can't this wait for..."
"Ed, something's happened. All the denizens of the Uhmbra who have been living here in the Archguard... They've been found dead. Murdered! There's rumors of riots in the Realm of the Mythic."
Grace and Ed exchanged glances. "Nuncio," they both said.

At first I was thinking that this chapter was maybe a bit superfluous, but when I thought about it for a minute I changed my mind. I think that the end justified the means, so to speak.
Oh, and since I forgot on the last chapter...

The ending of this was very cool. One hell of a cliff hanger.

I kind of agree with what Berty said, in the sense that it's getting a little thick -- they've been doing a lot of talking, not a lot of walking. BUT! I thought that the ending, which was very cool and interesting, made up for it. Had you not ended on a suspenseful note, I would have been like, "GET TO THE UHMBRA ALREADY, YOU FORNICATING HEATHENS!"
That scene was fairly hot, by the way.

Clive Barker's books often have an undulating flow. Usually (but not always) starting on a roaring high and then cooling to a globby mass of prose before freeing up again. Off the top of my head I cannot explain this, but be careful not too fall into the same trap as the story is getting a little treacle like.
Still top drawer mind, still top drawer.

You're getting kind of sloppy with your question marks. The last chapter had a similar problem, but it's a lot more pronounced in this one. I don't have time to specifically pick out every instance that you left question marks out, but you did, and I'm sure that if you look you'll see what I'm talking about. I'll try to comment again later, if you'd like me to explain precisely what I'm saying.

Maximillian just completely ruined my hard-on.
Damn you, why couldn't he have waited just a little longer??

Good timing, bro. A bunch of long-ass back-to-back meetings are about to start at work.
