It was a chilly, overcast afternoon Tuesday, when I ran into Brittany, whom I hadn't seen on campus yet. Hell, I hadn't seen her since graduation. She still looked amazing, as always, but who's gonna change much over 3 months? We talked for awhile; it felt good to talk to her again. We exchanged summer stories for about an hour, exchanged phone numbers and went our separate ways.
I ran into her again today. After about 15 minutes of chit chat, I knew I had to do something soon, so I spoke quickly.
"I quit smoking again."
She hit me playfully on the arm and replied, "When did you start smoking?"
"About a year ago."
"And you didn't tell me?"
"Sorry."
"Wait, you mean you smoked while you were going out with Kelly?"
"Nope, that was the reason I quit smoking the first time."
"Oh. Why are you quitting this time?"
"Same reason, different girl."
"Well, who's the lucky lady this time?"
I hesitated. I knew that I had to keep going now.
I smiled, looked her in the eye and said, "Well... would you like to go out to dinner tonight?"
She smiled and hugged me. "I was hoping it was me you were going to ask."
