the lovely boy confessed that i broke his heart and i tried not to meditate on the perfect shape of his hands nervously caressing the coffee cup. "there was a time when i would have forgiven even this." his voice is smooth. but i am not moved to touch him, to whisper that i cannot stop wondering what those hands would have done if i laid beneath them like a coffee cup, like that curved white vessel. i drank my own bitter black liquid by the gulpful, fast enough so that it would go down in burning lumps.
i am trying to swallow my shadow
but when i turn my head
she shifts.
she is always a breath behind me
taunting.
"there was a time i loved you."
my shadow listens with the curving earlobes of everyone i cannot be. greedy. needy.
a monster of appetite and cruelty,
a patriarch, a bitch,
a hero.
he looks out the window like he's waiting for the rain to start. we are in the middle of a drought, i inform him. i could hear the grass crunching under my feet on my way across the lawn. i've dried out too. maybe my blood's gone solid. there's no pumping heartbeat, no hot rushes to the head, no sweet water in the well. my shadow sips slowly from an ivory teacup and laughs a little when my throat burns. (she'd slaughter twenty elephants to take their tusks. their skin is soft until it dries in the sun, until the vultures pick it clean and wipe the blood off their silly bald heads, leaving behind only majestic bones.) she's smooth and satisfied. liquidy. i am dry. cold. smiling. she is always drunk.
"there was a time" he keeps repeating.
"there was a time."
i want to eat her.
we become the slop we swallow after our teeth mash it up and our stomachs churn it around.
my cells are made of lettuce and coffee. cashews and cabbage. apples. wheat berries and raisins.
she is made of pomogranates and chocolate and champagne. twinkies. and bleeding meat.
she is made of beating hearts, bright silky livers, screaming goats, and milk and honey.
she is entirely free of disease.
i'd like to be made of such fiersome stuff. such fire.
earth and water (such as are contained in my chart) add up to little more than mud.
"there was a time i'd take you back"
maybe if i jerk my head around fast enough
or if the rain comes...
then maybe i could see her as clearly as he does.
maybe i could love her
make her part of me.
maybe i could drink blood and suck his tongue at the same time.
maybe she's the good girl.

so many things in my room to hold me in stasis, pillows liquors songs blades, no woman now or no woman yet there's a woman or two or a million in my brain i see them every night with each and every needle dance and bottle haze light another one for me my only friend i feel like breathing something blue til my ears pop and i awake from the reverie of something indefinable

Good stuff Spike. For some reason, I thought you "retired." Perhaps I should kill more than 1 hour a month on this site.
Oh... I managed to find my way back to the wolves. I picked that young juvenile female I posted a story about for you, except now she's an alpha with pups. 5 pups. Now they just have to make it through gun season.
