My cat has me well and truly under his thumb (claw? Pad? Weird toe thingy?) He has a meow for gassy, hungry, happy, thirst, bored, attn whore and woe betide any who ignore him.

So true. It's often suggested to use a spray bottle full of water to "discipline" cats to stay off of tables, etc., but in many cases they either learn to ignore being squirted, or start drinking the water as casually as they would from a fountain.
Their ability to get along with us for thousands of years, though remain independent and ultimately unimpressed by us, has always intrigued me. I don't consider them domesticated in the traditional sense.
