As some of you know, I'm crazy. I'm also trying to get myself killed in some spectacular way, and this is an invitation to come along for the ride.
Late next year or possibly in mid-2007, I am planning for a 2 week trek in another of the most remote areas that South America has to offer: Patagonia.
Before I can do that though, I need to work on some skills and other requirements that need to be met before the agency I have chosen will allow me to sign up for that. So, where does that leave me?
I need to take a "class". You can play with me too.
The American Alpine Institute offers many such trips and courses.
http://www.mtnguide.com/ProgramDetail.asp?program=4
This 6 day course will cost around $1000 and allow me to practice the glacier / ice & snow climbing skills that I will need for a far more rigorous trip in Patagonia.
This course entails a climb of Mt. Baker, in Washington state. We will be doing some rock climbing, rope teamwork, ice & snow travel, and the use of ice axes, crampons, and other tools.
If anyone is interested in linking up to do at least this, read over the link above, and leave me a note at The.GodChicken.at.gmail.com so we can talk more about specific dates.
My final target: The Fitzroy Massif, Argentina. Just north of Chile's Torres Del Paine National Park.

I wanna take a trip to Maccu Piccu.
*******
no you don't
the trip up the mountain is a nightmare, all the surrounding area is closed by by the
military and you can absord all that MP has to offer from a good postcard or by
watching PBS or a Natl Geo program.
(kinda like Chevy Chase looking @ the Grand Canyon in Natl Lampoons Vacation)
where he's going, is quite a different experience altogether

I just don't know about the two weeks away from work in a row though. Plus, I am not much of a climber, scrambler upper yes but technical climber not so much. I'll look into this though.

GodChicken: Great class, I have done it myself. I might have interest in joining you again. Let me check my schedule since you will be in my neck of the woods and it is a blast.

Indo: the equipment guide list is available at the link, as a PDF document.
When I contact them I'll be asking about what is rentable and what will have to be purchased, but you would do well to find a well-stocked army/navy surplus store, along with a specialized hiking/climbing store.
I'm gathering interested parties so I can tell them how many people, as well. They have a ratio of 1 instructor to 5 students, so if we fill a class up that might get us a little cost reduction.

I promised myself my next adventure is going to be skydiving, so I don't thinkI will be doing something like this for a while.

Airfare is always going to be negotiable depending on where you are coming from.
I expect it will cost me $1500 all total for flight & a rental car to the start point for this class.
---------------------------
What about gear? Do you have all the required climbing/extreme temp stuff, and tents? And do you know how much to rent? And do you snore, because I am interested and I don't want to buy a tent.

How much is this going to cost? Not just the course, but the final trip airfare and the whole thing?

Good luck to you. I like to live life rather than live life to the fullest (meaning DIE EARLY).
I had a friend involved in all that stuff... He got himself paralyzed from the waste down. I then realized that sitting behind a computer or playing videogames was alot safer than motocross and my likelihood of getting fucked up and/or killed is alot less.
Taking a 200 mile hike through the hills or desert I'm all into, but ice climbing/rock climbing is way above my personal safety range. I do have alot of respect for you types that do it though... Well, except for the ones that get hurt and then put more lives in danger by having to go out and rescue them.
Good luck.
